Reminds me of Werewolf The Last Warrior, NES game
Werewolfs and gore, two things that I like since childhood.
Realizing now, I don't know any side scrollers with gore, except flash games. Blasphemous is the closest but it doesn't really leave a bloody mess.

there are different interpretations of creatures everywhere. i guess this one is of a talking werewolf? does it really even matter?
