The MOST SPEECHLESS MOMENT of John Madden's CAREER | Oilers @ Raiders (1971)

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- During a 1971 NFL game in week 9 between the Houston Oilers and Oakland Raiders, the Raiders led it convincingly 38-0 at the half. And for the first and only time ever, John Madden, who usually had a way with words and always knew what to say and how to say it, was left speechless. Not only did he not know what to say, but when he did finally speak, he didn't believe in his own message, and admitted to the press that it was completely made up.This is the story behind this remarkable moment in the Hall of Famer John Madden's legendary NFL career

Rest in Peace, John Madden.
The sports world hasnt been the same without him and Stewart Scott.
"Don't worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon" - John Madden
Love that saying! R.I.P Coach Madden!
John Madden and Pat Summerall can call games again in heaven 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Calling a game featuring Walter Payton, Derrick Thomas, Junior Seau, Pat Tillman, Steve McNair, Sean Taylor, and Reggie White 🙏🏼
Unless Al and the Snake talk him into coaching games in heaven instead.

I wonder what they would say about the 2022-23 season. It was a DOOZY.
He was an absolute legend as both a coach, a broadcaster and with video games. He will be sorely missed.
Hey, that's 3 things.
He was a legendary marketing/pitchman too.
Baruch dayan emet (Blessed is the Righteous Judge, more or less). This was my prayer when my grandfather passed. I offered this yesterday, too. Thanks for this video.
Rest in peace John Madden - a giant of the game. He was one of the voices of my childhood. From coaching glory to broadcasting acclaim to video game success, there was nobody who walked the unique path he did in the NFL
John madden is a biggest part of why I love football. A great teacher that past his passion for the game on to me and millions of others. He was a great ambassador for the game of football. The Voice of so many great moments. You will be mist R.I.P. John Madden. Thank you.
Great job, JG9!
Football history lost a game yesterday 💔 R.I.P. Coach Madden ... PS, thank you for teaching me the game I love
This is such a great video you put together.
So glad I stumbled upin your channel this year. No fluff, and absolutely great context as always.
One of the greatest coaches that ever lived!!! Rest in peace Mr. Madden
He be my #1 choice
RIP John Madden. Legends never die🙏🙏
A true Icon! R.I.P Coach Madden! Raider 4 Life! ☠☠☠
Good homage to John Madden, JG9. I remember he hated to fly, so he travelled to the games in an RV. Drove all over the country. He really connected with folks, far and wide. This was his time - late December, cold, windy, and playoff football. R.I.P. John Madden.
RIP John
RIP you beautiful human being
Madden is legendary man.
R.I.P. John Madden. Without you, we would have never heard of the "Turducken".
John Madden was my favorite football personality. I'm not a Raiders fan, but he was a great coach. John Madden should be on the cover of Madden 23.
RIP John Madden. What a great coach and more importantly, what a great person! Footnote: the following year we blasted the Oilers again, 34 - 0 in Houston on MNF.
The game where the Oilers fan gave the finger on national television?

"They're #1 in the nation!" -Dandy Don
"Tastes great, less filling!"
RIP HOF John Madden.
Beautiful video. Madden was truly a legend. Phenomenal video and so well done. Outstanding job
“Boom!”
I love doing a deliberately Fake Punt on Madden Video game and listening to Madden’s puzzled reaction which actually got me First Downs.
One of my teammates at UC Davis was drafted by Raiders in 76 went on to get a Super Bowl ring when Madden was coach .
I asked what John was like in person “just like you see him on TV “
Genuine person
RIP
John Madden will live forever
BOOM!
Him and Pat Summerall are still the best sports broadcast duo ever. RIP to both.
I always think of him saying the Patriots should play for OT in Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl.
Even the best have their WTF moments.
RIP John Madden
put in all of the alternates in the second half and enjoy watching the rest of the game with your starting players. classic.
As a 9-year-old, I attended the Raiders' previous game at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, where the Saints, led by QB Ed Hargett, rallied in the 4th quarter to tie the mighty Raiders 21-21. It was one of the first pro games I attended.
Drew Buie Career: 9 receptions averaging 25.2 yards/reception....
I mainly known him for the Madden games
Crazy how JaguarGator did a Madden video on Xmas Day and then 3 days later, hes gone, touch of death??
I started paying close attention to football in 1987, right around the early stages of John Madden's broadcasting career and his partnership with Pat Summerall. Boy those two were a master class as you've highlighted on this channel before.
Even though I strove for a destiny as a writer and not as a broadcaster, I was very much taken with Madden's obvious love of and enthusiasm for the game even when I didn't necessarily get the "Boom," "whap," or "doink" noises or some of his silly analysis (Troy Aikman's four-day beard during the 1995 NFL season, anyone?). He had a way of explaining things that a layman could understand.
Even years after he and Summerall retired, I can still hear their voices in my head doing NFL games both real and imaginary. They were both that resonant. May they both rest in peace.
RIP John Madden. Even if you didn't know anything about football or had never seen a game before, when Madden was on the broadcast, you would learn a lot from it. He explained everything perfectly.
"BOOM"!!! -John Madden
RIP Mr. Madden. You were a true legend of the game that will never be replaced.
R.I.P.
And what a fantastic job laying out the context leading up to this game. You really did your homework--As always, great research and reporting
The Raiders coaching staff should go back to the shirts at 10:00.
John Madden is one of three coaches, Vine Lombardi and George Allen are the other two, to coach more than ten seasons and never have a losing record.
So far with 15 seasons, neither has Mike Tomlin. However, the last two games will make or break Tomlin in that regard.
Maddening and Summerall made Sundays great. Those two could call a race between sails and make it exciting
I miss John Madden
What a pity John Madden will never hear that shopworn "spike the ball on every play" meme ever again.
Rest In Peace, Coach Madden. 🏈
R.I.P
"Guys, just keep doing what you're doing."
Done.
Getting old truly sucks. But Madden made being a fan of this game fun as hell. I think I only seen him coach 1 or 2 seasons, so I really can't speak on that facet. But as a commentator, there was nobody better. Summerall and Madden were an epic team in the booth. There's reason to believe the two of them are probably in the booth up there somewhere.
And many Holy Rollers for eternity, John. RIP.
RIP John Madden 1936-2021
Seeing the footage of the game there, man was the Oilers defence really that bad? They were getting shrugged off by everyone. The QB basically dodges and fends off multiple guys. Wtf
Every video on this channel: "We need some context."
I noticed that you showed clips of 3 Raider quarterbacks, Daryle Lamonica, Ken Stabler, and George Blanda. Are all the clips from the 1971 season?
Boom
R.I.P. Madden. BOOM!!!
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Legends never die!!! John Madden Rest In Power
Doesn’t matter if the horse is blind, just load up the wagon…
And... let's go. #Madden #iconic
The yard markers for the Raiders is cool...
Maybe he should have thought of something because after that great performance they lost the following 3 games and got eliminated from 1971 Playoffs. The only fly in their ointment from 1967 till 1977. Anyway may John Madden be resting in peace.
Thanks for making the Raiders a winner. Maybe someday another John Madden will teach our guys how to win again. Heaven just got a great announce team in Summerall and Madden.
R.I.P. John Madden.
As a youth growing up in Houston I suffer through this game, a 56 to 7 playoff loss in 1969 where Oakland lead 35 to nothing at the Half and the 34 to nothing Monday night loss in 1972. Madden and mad bomber Lamonica bad news for Oilers
Damn. 38 points to 0 in the first half is the MISMATCH of the century. Lol.
I'm SURE that John Madden had PLENTY of SPEECHLESS MOMENTS in that College football game he called with Pat Summerall. But at LEAST this moment ISN'T a 39.6 moment. OTHERWISE I would have to SPIKE it into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play.
When the old Raiders carried Madden through the Pearly Gates yesterday, in true Raider fashion ... they dropped him. Just like in the Super Bowl. RIP, Coach.
Can you please out a memorial piece at the end of the video? Something like "John Madden April 10 1936-December 28 2021." It would be nice if his fans saw this and a note that Coach Madden passed away within hours of this video bring made it released. This would be nice to see. I am also interested in sponsoring a future video on Coach Madden.
RIP John Madden!
Rip John Madden
Rest In Peace to footballs coolest grandpa.
Bring back the Houston Oilers. Tennessee Titans are not the Oilers and they don't count. Bless you in Heaven John Madden.
Haven't the titans had more success? If anything get rid of the Texans or cowboys
@@Giantsfanlewis Well they reached the Super Bowl, however Oilers fans had an emotional attachment to them despite ripping our hearts out. I don't feel any connection to thee new uniforms and the state of Tennessee. I don't feel anything for the Texans either. I fell in love with the Oilers and the Titans and Texans feel like an arranged marriage.
@@donparisheo I'd enjoy the oilers coming back, though as I mentioned, the Texans would make more sense to break up/rename. The Titans have made a legacy for themselves in Tenn and the Texans are a garbage organization from the top down that needs a restart. But I do get what your saying
@@Giantsfanlewis Yes I would be cool with a rebranding of the Texans to the Oilers. Ideally I would like to get back the records and have Tennessee begin with becoming the Titans. Houston never stopped loving the Oilers...the problem was Bud Adams.
RIP john madden so great period sad loss nfl icon gone
JG, you know I love your videos, and that I appreciate your work like no one else, but you are really over-using the word "iconic."
RIP and looking forward to hearing Madden calling Heaven Football games one day.
Unitas fades back to pass finds a wide open Don Hutson in the end zone...
You said Jon madden is but it’s Jon madden was now RIP coach love your content
"Whatever he came up with was complete nonsense" hey it worked for Ray Lewis's speeches.
Rip John.
I’m honestly surprised there hasn’t been some kind of movie made about madden’s life, from the start of his career to the HOF. It’s a shame John candy is gone cuz he would’ve been perfect to play madden too, at least in appearance
Well...a happy life makes for a boring biography, as they say.
Was this the game where an Oilers fan gave MNF camera the middle finger and Dandy Don said “he thinks his team is number one!”
No, that game was in the Astrodome.
@@toddbiesel4288 thanks. When I think raiders oilers from the 70s that’s the first thing that comes to mind haha
Lol that sounds like a some current reporter claiming "**** Joe Biden" was let's go Brandon. When will they learn
'How the raiders season was going'.
Well it started by them losing to a poor patriots team in what was the first regular season game in the c old foxboro stadium...(al micheals referenced this in maidens mnf debut in 2002....the patriotsc opening their new Gillette stadium)
The timing of this John Madden set of video's is uncanny.
RIP John Madden.
About the only thing he could have said at halftime there was "Let's do it again this second half."
'BOOM'. 'That is a lot of humanity in that pile'. 'He got a big paw on that one'. 'Tastes great. Less filling'. '...and madden can't believe it. He looks like a split water ----- out there'.
I hear Madden is pretty speechless right now about this video
This video tells you all about John Madden which is honesty. Madden knew the game was over with a 38-0 halftime lead so why give a phony speech about how the Oilers could come back. Honesty integrity and being comfortable in your skin are the qualities John Madden had and that is what made him popular with just about everyone.
John Madden Football is a staple in my gaming library. Rest In Peace John Madden.
D.E.P. Bad Madd 😞
i'm sure that the back ups got plenty of playing time
Considering how locked in his Raiders were that day, what could he say?
RIP John Madden you will always be in our hearts
Buie's 2 scores were the most of his career...they were the ONLY scores of his career!
Madden was a dominant coach, 103-32-7 and only missed the playoffs 2x (71, & 78) and a true coaching and broadcasting icon...RIP
Rest In peace John madden you will be missed
If the Bills best the Bucs in the Super Bowl, Brady will not get the last laugh
And no comments about how he encouraged players to cheat and play dirty?
Truth must hurt.
Play dirty in the 1970s? What was he doing, telling his players to legit kill people. In all seriousness, he had to do anything to keep up with the roided out Steelers and their dynasty of PA drugs
Tell madden it wasn't a fumble.
Madden outlived a lot of his former players...snake, casper, upshaw, otto, dalby, bubba, tatum, matuzak, davidson and al. Madden sure saw a lot of trays full of roids in the day.
Summary: 1971; Oilers were bad, Raiders were good, Raiders lead 38-0 at Halftime, Madden has trouble giving advice at halftime hope I saved you 12 minutes
Great job, JG9!
RIP
RIP John Madden
