  • This backpacking trip on the Four pass loop was 6 days and 5 nights July 30th- Aug4th over 30 miles and 4 mountain passes starting from Crested butte. It rained every day from 3pm - 5:30am. Temperatures at night were in the low 40’s maybe high 30’s.
    This was my first backpacking trip as well as my first time in Colorado. There were trying times but I had an amazing time and definitely plan to do the trail again.
    It was an amazing trail and I would highly recommend it.

    I got there with my two children last summer. This is a great video because it shows the rain reality and certain things the 4PL hikers have to know and be prepared. The rain there is absolutely freezing cold. I admire that you were able to hike in the rain for hours! For beginners I recommend 5 or 6 days for 4PL. (put the rain in consideration and gain more time to enjoy the great views in possibly a life-time trip.)

    For those who failed finishing up, it's actually pretty natural because 4PL is ranked difficulty in fact. Many who are attracted by the views and simply think it doesn't look difficult might end up in trouble... no kidding. It is the rain + the elevation + days backpack weight that come our perfect challenge!! I actually offered my two college sons a choice to withdraw right in front of our 1st pass. I sensed the extreme and uncertain about how to assure the safety... yeah we finished, in a way much more than expected. So here I do have some suggestions for those beginners who want to try. 1. backpack weight no more than 40lbs. If you sit down with backpack weight and unable to get up easily, the weight is too much. Thinking about when one is really tired on the trail, one would not have the strength to stand up with one's backpack after resting. Don't be greedy on food variety. Keep it as light as possible. This is why we did see some experienced hikers who were able to finish 4PL in 2 days. 2. best time to hike 4PL is early end of June and early July (more dry days). Must be prepared for the rain and be able to keep warm. Early July you also see more hikers, which makes you feel safer. If within 3 hours you don't see any other hikes, be careful. 3. Trekking poles help. 5+day schedule help so that you can stop at a beautiful camp ground and not miss the backpacking fun and purpose. Another reason is, you cannot find a camp ground at the time you feel you do need one...

    Great video! Congrats on finishing the loop. I vividly remember the campsite that you found on the afternoon of day 4. My Dad and I passed that campsite on our way to Willow Lake years ago. Looked like a great place!

    Good job. I envy the solo hikers. Seems like we started at the same trailhead and same month. Scenery looked familiar.

    How long is the hike from CB to the actual loop trail? Did you park at Gothic Rd? Trying to figure out if we fight the crowds on the Aspen side or head in thru CB

    • @Garrett_Logan
      @Garrett_Logan  Год назад +1

      I actually have videos on both of your questions. The trail guide video covers all details of the trail. It is an extra 2 miles to the loop from the west maroon entrance. I also did a video about the road from crested butte to the west maroon trail head which will be really helpful. My recommendation would be to take the road to the west maroon trail head, you’ll deal with 0 crowds and it’s free parking as long as you need
