- A 4K walking tour through Rotherham England to see what's happening in the town, what is there, what has gone and what has changed here in Rotherham Town Centre.
Rotherham is a town in South Yorkshire in the North of England close to Sheffield and Doncaster.
Best known for coal mining and the steel industry, Rotherham is a minster town with around 250,000 people living in and around the area. We took a walk around Rotherham Town Centre to check out the place and show you around the streets here.
We start this walking tour on Westgate and head North past Main Street and down to Ship Hill and High Street. We take a left here onto Market Place and down into the heart of Rotherham Town Centre.
We come onto Rotherham Minster, All Saints Square, College Street and then onto High Street. The walk ends around Rotherham Bridge, Rotherham Train Station and the new development on the River Don
Rotherham town centre has various chain stores including Tesco Extra. Following the availability of "Vitality Grants" from 2009 onwards, a number of new independent businesses opened in the town centre such as Yella Brick Road
In 2015, Rotherham won the Great British High Street award for its independent town centre shopping. Judges praised the transformation of key properties and the restoration of its "historic core"
A plaque commemorating the award was unveiled by Secretary of State for Local Government & Committees Sajid Javid MP in September 2016.
As of 2021 the majority of the retail in Rotherham is made up of a thriving independent scene with lots of new start up businesses opening in the town centre.
Due to the close proximity of Sheffield City Centre, Meadowhall shopping centre and the towns Parkgate Retail Park Rotherham has struggled to attract major brands. This has created the opportunity for Rotherham to proposition itself as an independent alternative.
Rotherham is the hometown of the Chuckle Brothers, Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman along with World Cup and English Premier League referee Howard Webb.
Sean Bean began his acting career in Rotherham while actors Liz White, Ryan Sampson, Dean Andrews and Darrell D'Silva also hail from Rotherham, as does former leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague, and Sir Donald Coleman Bailey.
Presenter James May grew up in Rotherham. His co-presenter on Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson trained to be a journalist at the Rotherham Advertiser.
Comedians Sandy Powell and Duggie Brown were born in Rotherham, as was actress Lynne Perrie. Christopher Wolstenholme of Muse, DJ Kritikal Mass, Dean Andrews of Life On Mars, artist Margaret Clarkson, band Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers and singer-actor Rob McVeigh were all born or mostly raised in Rotherham.

We have a beautiful town, it's just a shame it's been neglected over the years. So many shops have shut, slowly dying. It's a shell of it's former glory unfortunately.
Hopefully it will come back though - needs some TLC and some independent businesses to spring up
It's more than a shell, it's a shite hole. Don't get me wrong there is really good history in our town, but it gone down hill really badly since the late 70s early 80s n early 90s. I remember when I was younger there was quiet packed with lots of ppl around town. I remember going into the cafe(forgotten what it was called) were church it was on corner on a Saturdays morning with my mum every time we went to town she use to buy me a bun n a drink of pop (good old day in 80s). We use to go into Woolworths and buy stuff I remember nicking some sweets I got in trouble outside thou from me mum one min I didn't have any sweets then the next she saw me with some I got told off really badly...I never listened to her any how cos the next time I went with her I did it again but this time she never saw me. Which I put them in my pocket I had loads of sweets n never got court..
The good old days wish they was back again...
@@neilcooke6524 Before the Great re... *Cough* I mean Pandemic, it was on life support.
Now since the Great re... *Cough* pandemic, I believe they have pulled the plug! So you maybe right!
It is actually a very lovely town centre. Shame about the poverty
Rotherham is our work place 🪴🦅🇦🇱
I was born in Rotherham. I live in Wales now.. Some of the best memories and best people in my life from this town. My mum's passed away now.. so it's such a pleasure to see all the places we walked together. Rotherham will always be in my heart.. And yes beautiful buildings. Rotherham as
one of the best parks.. Clifton Park.. I hope the town gets back to its glory again.. To me it will always be a place of treasured memories.. and the friendliest people ! 💜
I used to ring the minister bells mid 70s...
Thank you Sir, an excellent video showing my home town in a favourable light for a change, really enjoyed it keep up the good work.
You’re welcome - I will be back shortly to film more!
Best town in Yorkshire, Great to see it again in the sunshine.
Great people and very friendly.
Hello to my relatives mostly in Rotherham, up the millers.
Pontefract supuir
Jesus...you actually made Rotherham look quite habitable 😅😅
ha ha not many positive comments on this video regarding Rotherham - I must have hit the jackpot with the weather and the people in the town centre that day?
@@GimbalWalkTV absolutely
@@GimbalWalkTV I'm from Rotherham and you caught the town centre on a good day 😆. The County pub you see near the bus station is pretty much famous so much stuff has gone off outside there 😂

😂😂😂😂
Thanks, I've just moved to Rotherham and it's good to look around. Saves my legs. I really like it. So glad to see it all.. you are right, lovely buildings.
Thanks Liz! Hope you enjoy your time in Rotherham!
I'm moving to treeton in Rotherham from parson cross in Sheffield in next couple weeks I don't no Rotherham that well so yeah I'm same watching this vid will save my legs too lol
I’m the same
I live in Thailand now when Iived in Rotherham it was buzzing
I know of you. You are a friend of Chris Teather. I used to live in Rotherham aswell, but left 40 years ago. Used to go to the charade and Adam and Eve.
Made and born in Sheffield but lived and worked in Rotherham, in the 60 /70s ,the locals used to say "we're off to the big city" when they made a trip to Sheffield.
They still do 🤣🤣
@@GimbalWalkTV Never heard anyone say that
Once it was full of clothes shops...now is full of closed shops.
What a shame. Breaks my 💔
Miss you Rotherham. Lots of memories related with this town.. thanks for sharing fabulous video with us..
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Wow! I've never seen me old town looking so shiny. God Bless Rovrum
Looks great in that sunshine ☀️
Rotherham was good when I was younger. I have fond memories of it as a girl and a teenager. Now at 35 I cannot remember the last time I went into the centre as there is nothing there to go for. All the shops are at Parkgate and Meadowhall.
Very true - same In many towns and cities I visit these days too
Shame that the police was not s good 35 year's ago.
A few snapshots of Rotherham’s history:-
1) Built on an Iron Age border that took the Romans 40 years to conquer, before a Roman Fort was built.
2) One of the barons that forced King John to sign Magna Carta was a Rotherham Lad.
3) 18th century home to Lords Effingham and Rockingham who helped the USA gain independence
4) Home of the Rotherham plough that contributed so much to the Agricultural Revolution
5) Home to the Walker cannons, the quality of which enabled Nelson to double and triple shot his guns
6) Home to Mr Bailey inventor of the Bailey Bridge.
Superb stuff thank you John! I wasn't aware of any of those facts so really appreciate you posting them for us!
Please someone can you help me to manage accommodation this town
Congratulations on 10k mate 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Luke!!
Thanks for making Rotherham look quite nice
I just filmed it - the town looked great in the sunshine ☀️
@@GimbalWalkTV its not that bad the council is trying to improve it the building going on near the railway station is a cinama, so hopefully it'll bring people in.
Great video, thanks for posting!
I was surprised you shot Rotherham. But after watching your video, yeah it is pretty special. This American lived there for ten years, well a village outside it. These are the paths I took each weekend to get necessities or get my banking done. I was always on a mission to get my shopping finished. I never paid much mind to the beautiful architecture around me except for the majestic Minstrel which is amazing inside and out. Thanks for the memories and the lovely walk! :)
Woow
I've never been to Rotherham as an adult my dad and grandmother still have family here. It looks beautiful in the sunshine. Thanks for showing us.
My home town 😎 for a small town it’s an amazing place with amazing people. Great tour keep it up 🙌🏽
Yes! Thank you!
Really surprised by how big it is. Lovely buildings, plenty shops in pedestrian shopping areas. Plus a bit of sunshine 😀 smashing!! Xx
Just needs some TLC!
When you ask if you have been to the minster On that corner was the ringabells cafe. The bells. Sit and look at the church from there. Bells would ring Saturdays for weddings as I recall. Beautiful inside but not been in since the mid 70’s. Some beautiful buildings in Rotherham. Meadowhall ripped the heart out of the centre. Rotherham council over the decades completed the dissection ! Good video though. Captures what’s good beautifully!
Thank you so much
I went out in Rotherham every single Thursday, Friday night when the night club pop was around. It was crazy busy! Loved it .
In 2010-2012
I think I used to do that too but am struggling to remember the names of the bars and clubs
A beautiful town with loads of beautiful buildings and fine architectural details as long as the council doesn’t decide to knock them all down. 20 years since I’ve lived there and the number of demolished buildings is insane. The out of town shopping definitely is responsible for the decline. Many happy memories! Thanks for the video.
You asked what they are building on high street, well, they are in the process of demolishing the old British home stores/primark building and creating a coffee garden I believe. I don't know how you have managed to make my home town look this good xxx
Thanks Dawn - I did wonder what they were going to build!
Yes l was thinking the same but they don't show the alcoholics nor the druggies on the streets it's a shame l know longer go into town l use the retail for all my shopping now .has most of the shops have closed especially for clothes mostly charity shops and they don't know what to charge
@@mandycheetham9309 It's such a shame nobody goes to the town centres anymore
@@GimbalWalkTV l know because there is especially in Rotherham some beautiful buildings it's the small businesses l feel for
@@mandycheetham9309 I haven't been into town for years, only to Parkgate but this video did make it look better than I remember.
Our town isn't bad. You get the odd few bad people drunks an users, n crime but that's same with any town. Iv never experienced anything bad from shopping or from a night out. hopefully when the cinema an coffee garden thing theyre building is done it'll be better then hopefully more shops open too. I'll always support the remaining shops, even the new ones whether it's a charity or not.
Definitely! Well said ❤️❤️
I moved from town late last year...because I witnessed a machete attack. Same week someone else was stabbed. Then another a few weeks after that. I managed to move after 6 months. The biggest 3 problems are this...
1/the council moves exconvicts in because they receive funding for it.
2/the drug problem is out of hand
3/the council have pushed all the good shops out of town by increasing rent while the customers aren't coming. And then waste money constantly decorating the town and building things.
Moving criminals in and pushing big business's out and wasting tax payers money only puts people off coming to town and the whole process is spiralling.
We really need a different kind of council!
Excellent video by the way well done.
Thank you very much!

1/the council moves exconvicts in because they receive funding for it.
2/the drug problem is out of hand and many drug users pretend to be homeless and beg money off shoppers. Putting people off shopping. The bigger the drug problem, the less people visit and then the more desperate the drug users become to get money to buy drugs and that increases crime and assaults

Great video, it's over 40 years since my last fleeting visit to Rotherham, it looks like a different town. Same great Yorkshire folk though
Definitely!!
Thank you for your video walking around Rotherham. I enjoy the early morning walks and your stunt pigeon friend. As for the negative comments....run for council yourselves. It is so easy to complain and takes little effort our of your day. Be that person that brings life back to Rotherham. It is easy to turn tourists off ( cash in the till), than it is to bring them back. Gimbals walks is doing a mighty job for tourism.
Well said ❤️❤️
I’m from Rotherham gosh it’s so different I haven’t been to Rotherham since 1998 since everything moved to Meadowhall and Park gate the bingo hall you mentioned use to be called the Odeon quite a fair size for a town enjoyed looking round
The Odeon! Thanks Pauline - you solved it for me!
@@GimbalWalkTV you’re welcome
Brilliant Video. Rotherham born and bred me sen
Thank you!
Rotherham is way better than people give it credit for
@@GimbalWalkTV Totally agree with you, does get alot bad said about it, but I love the place.
Genuinely surprised at how lovely the place is.
Sat next to a couple in the County (pub near bus station) was surprised to find out they were tourists! From down south! They use Rotherham as a base and go walking in local countryside, or jump on train to peak district. Paying two pounds for a pint of larger was amazing to them. We've met up for last 6 or 7 years for a few beers. Ps over six quid a pint in their local !!!
Crikey bit of a difference in prices then!! 🤣🤣
I love the videos that are filmed in 4K now that I have a 4K definition television it makes it so immersive.
Definitely!
I"m filming in 8K soon too!
So sad what has happened to some of our town centres. Empty shops galore.
Same in every town and city now due to online shopping becoming the norm
My husband and I are from California. Currently staying in Sheffield. We will be in Rotherham today for Women's Soccer Euro cup. It was nice to see the town ahead of time. Thank you for your video.
You're welcome!
Enjoy Sheffield - welcome to the steel city!
splendid town, hopefully the riverside will be taken cared of and developed appropriately, just rivers and trees make cities beautiful. thx
I grew up in Rotherham in the 1980's when the shops were amazing. C&A, Coopers toy shop, BHS cafe, Harpers book shop and the old imperial buildings before it was renovated. Then along came Meadowhall & Parkgate and changing shopping habits. Look at a lot of less well off towns around the country and they all look the same. The demise of all the big chains is an opportunity for small independents to rise again. Its amazing whats been achieved in the High Street area. I'm looking forward to the new Forge Island development.
Meadowhall really did kill the town centre off didn’t it
@@GimbalWalkTV I think Meadowhall will even struggle pretty soon with the rise of online shopping. It relies on big names to pay its extortionate rent prices. Might even end up like the ghost malls of the US!
I lived there 1991-1994 where we saw BHS close and C&A. It just ended up being banks, building societies and travel agents. I loved summer when we had Rotherham in Bloom; the displays of flowers were gorgeous!
@@camcab147 Ah yes! I remember Rotherham In Bloom! fantastic stuff!
@@GimbalWalkTV No not really l have only been too meadow hall once l always used Rotherham for my shopping now all the shops are closing druggies and alcoholic's on the streets plus my mum is 76yrs old and no longer goes because she does not feel safe even going to the bank
This is ace. Did you notice the artwork on a lot of the buildings - we have an art trail! Edvard Munch's scream adorns the side of Subway on High Street (my favourite picture). You did catch the town on a nice day. It's just so weird to see so many people and mostly wearing masks. The pigeons all seem in good nick at the moment - they used to fall foul of the anti-pigeon wiring/netting and would often have bad injuries to their feet. Street cleaners have done a nice job, bless 'em. The architecture is very ... eclectic ... as you can see in this video. It always feels like Rotherham hasn't yet been finished, it is always a work in progress. The bit just before the railway station, is the new Forge Island Development, going to be a cinema and hotel complex - if it ever gets started.
The Forge Island development looks really exciting to me - I really hope that gets finished!
I'm really glad the sun was shining that day so I could put positivity into the video for everyone!
Ah my hometown! Lovely place,If you ignore the virus and complete lonely streets!
Well said ❤️
Although I'm not from Rotherham I think its reputation is unwarranted. It is going through the same problems that will afflict everywhere quite soon, especially when "furlough" ends and people realise their job is no more. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you
Agree with your thoughts there too 👍👍❤️
Land across from train station is due to open as a cinema and entertainment centre. Hopefully it brings some life back into the town and helps keep the pubs open. You forgot the New York Stadium as well but I'll let you off as I liked the video.
I wasn’t sure where the New York Stadium was. I totally lost my bearings once I’d arrived in the town centre
I’m due to go back and film a a few more so will definitely be including that in the next one 👍👍👍
This is my hometown which is Rotherham and i'm proud to be a Rotherham local after all them years living in this place. I used to go to Rotherham Town Centre alot with my parents and get some shopping and have a bite at Greggs maybes for a sausage roll or a pasty.I visited Rotherham a couple of months ago for my uncles funeral and this place is being neglected in a big way and it has changed a lot over the years. Don't get me wrong i still love Rotherham in a big way because it is a place where i was born and educated when i was a kid. Rotherham is a place i will always hold a place in my heart and it is a place with so many memories for me as a kid.
I was born in Rotherham and left when I was 18....I'm now 64.....wow....hardly recognised the place😮

Conheço a cidade . Fiquei apaixonada.
You made it look so nice it's a shame theres not much there these days, I was christened in the minster many moons ago.
Ah lovely!
Hopefully Rotherham can grow and blossom again!
What a beautiful day to take this video, there's old building and new building, each different size shops small ones n big ones, it must have been early to film this as there hardly no people about,
Mind you thou there never is at lot off ppl about. especially when the council shut all the good shops up etc, Primark, m n s, blah, blah, blah.
But there's nothing like the good old days in the 80s n early 90s, when shops was packed with ppl and there was loads off ppl about that's what you call a town but now it's a right shite hole,
Apart from that really good tour of our town well done
Thank you so much
I will be back again soon to film an update once more people are around
@@GimbalWalkTV you’ll be waiting a long time because there are never lots of people in Rotherham as all the shops are closed

The Mecca bingo hall was once the Odeon cinema, and later the Scala Cinema. After the cinema closed it became Chantry Video, a place where films on video could be hired. Years ago the building across the road was a car dealer called Enrights, sellng the Rootes range of cars including Hillman.
Thank you Shaun!
Can't imagine it being Chantry Video - that must have been a huge video library!
@@GimbalWalkTV The Scala had an amazing Wurlitzer organ and had a huge screen , the seating was on two levels and it was an amazing place; it’s where I saw Star Wars when it first came out…also Grease. The Star Wars queue was around the building.

bingo hall did use to be a cinema originaly odean then changed its name to scala closed in late 80's ,area just before station going to be a new leisure development including cinema bars restaurants area is called forge island
Thank you Ian - that Forge Island looks really exciting!
Right next to a shiny new looking train station too!
Great town in the 80's, had a very local family feeling back then with some family run shops. Sadly like most towns slipped away to shopping centres and people who have no love or respect for a place. Still looks nice enough but add the people and it's a place you don't want to go.
The improvements being made should change that hopefully
I lived there for 4 years and I never explored the area near the train station at all.
I dont' think it looked like that until recently though so I'm not surprised you didn't. It's only recently had work done there I think

Yeah the cinema at the bottom of Ship Hill was a Cannon cinema. Saw some great films there in the 80’s. When Ghostbusters was on people queued up Ship Hill to get in!
Used to be called the Essoldo back in the 60’s/70’s. It was the cheaper alternative to the Odeon which was about 4 mins walk away lol.

You’re welcome ❤️
Yeah thats wrong, like half the people in the town centre are foreign these days and everyone one else is either from the local 6th form college or really old
why do people think Rotherham is a brilliant place, why ? Rotherham was at one time when i was younger it was a busy thriving town and had brilliant shops till this council knacked it all, there is nothing in this town now, we had good shops it was so busy on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays and Saturdays, now you or lucky to see half a dozen people in the town centre it is sad, Woolworth has gone British Home stores has gone , M & S has gone, some people will not remember if they are youngsters shops like Ray Allen men shop the chicken shop All St Square, Van Allen bottom of Doncaster Gate and Wellgate, Davy Cafe,
Graftons, White Hall Restaurant, Boots in High Street, Masons Top of High Street, Burtons Men Shop, Rotherham Market that stood in place of the Rotherham Police Station , Main Street, Telling Butchers , Ellis Fruit and Veg , Spights Tripe shop, and many more the council in creased the rates for shop and they shops closed, another was Wakefield Army Store, Rotherham will never see any thing like that again nor the people of Rotherham .
I hear the exact same thing from people in every single town and city I visit to be fair David.
I think online shopping has changed town centres for good now
They'll be more residential and leisure from now on I Think
With all due respect this happened long before online banking, this council caused untold deprivation to Rotherham town center, I ask another question why do the public back this council up, yes they have done some good things in this town but they have just made it a town that no one really wishes to come too. Think on this if a person outside South Yorkshire ask someone from Rotherham where they are from they say Sheffield because the people of Rotherham don't wish others to know where they really come from. Online shopping sorry if that is your opinion I respect that but i lived through the late 60s and 70s and Rotherham was rendered a vacant town by the greed of the local Authority .
I remember it well. Those were the days it was a thriving town.
I agree RMBC have destroyed it they would rather see empty shops than lower the rates. They give cheap shops free rates for a year then they close and move on while established shops had to pay excessive rates.
Who wants to walk round a town centre full of drunks, druggies and gangs of Asian makes. No thanks
Here go the shop we lost not because of Meadowhell but because of the greedy local authority , Washington men's shop, British home store, marks and Spencer, Woolworth, Ray Allen's men's shop, Sexy Rexy, Victor de Roek , Grafton bread shops, chicken shop, Thornton's, Blyth model dairy, Cantor's Henry Wigfall and son, True Form Shoe shop, Giles glasses shop Wellgate, Van Allen's bottom of Do castergate,. Wakefield Army Store, high street And Howard Street , Pecks, Sheffield Woodhouse Furniture store, Denham, Wellgate , Bradwells Handbag shop in hight street, brooks friend shop in All St Square, brooks and Brookes Taboconist top of high street, the Empire picture palace , bottom of ship hill, boots high street, odeon we went alone every Saturday kids, morning Hopalong Cassidy, land of the giants, cartoons and so on, kid have never enjoyed thing like that. There was the old market, Gray's Butchers, Tellings Butchers , Stockdale's fruit stall. Ellis Fruit Stall, just a few but there was many more, Saturday teatime go and get a couple of joints fruit and veg and other goods all with a £5.00 and still have money left. There was White Hart. Gas board next to Chapel on the Bridge, Sheffield furnishing Company, Cooper's toy shop on Doncaster gate, Britain Brothers Doncaster Gate , Smoker Hall above Britain Brothers, Sound Of Music in Howard Street top of market.so if people think Rotherham is a good town center then you either can't remember when it was, are you done really know what you are talking about sorry.
I love living in Rotherham! It’s a shame that there is a lot of problems! It’s old but not very old!
Home sweet home
👍👍👍👍
Used to be a brilliant town. I grew up there....
Rotherham looks like a very nice town
It is but has a poor reputation
@@GimbalWalkTV I wonder why.

What’s it like?
@@GimbalWalkTV its a town near Rotherham and it has some nice places like Coronation Park, The Queens Corner and Roche Abbey etc
Please do kings lynn and sandrigham area
Good ideas! Will definitely do those! 👍👍👍
Lived there first 20 years of my life. Left mid 60’s, hardly recognised it!
Honestly I was impressed when I filmed there!
Some of the old victorian buildings are quite ornate.
I live here, like most places you got your nice areas & not so, but it’s a small town, most people know each other.
Exactly - it's same as everywhere - good parts and bad parts 👍
Is One Below still at Rotherham Town Center?
Building work near train station is going to be cinema and plaza
That will be fantastic when it’s done. Will it be finished this year?
The building site on High Street directly across from the Warammer store is going to be an "Urban Park".
What is an urban park? Like for skateboarders?
@@GimbalWalkTV Not unlike what you passed near the church, a green rea in the middle of the urban area with seat and tables.
There's nothing in Rotherham it's a 💯% ghost town
Hopefully it has a brighter future ahead
@@GimbalWalkTV it never will. It's always been a dump and it always will be!
Looks clean because no one visits, wait till we get back to normal ,then you will see how it REALLY looks
@@marianchambers2292 It's not clean
Am a Rotherham lad :)
Ah nice! 👍👍👍👍
Nice video but still trying to spot a reflection of you in a shop window!
Ha ha I work hard to make sure that never happens Ryland!
It appears that Rotherham as managed to keep some traditional shops and it is not all multinationals swamping their town centre.
That's true - definitely a plus point
