  • Clip from an episode of Instruments of Death investigating how weapons and body armour were developed by taking a look at the impact of the Battle of Towton during the Wars of the Roses.
On the battlefield Yorkists and Lancastrians hacked desperately at each other, but in this bloody business of hand-to-hand combat, one weapon ruled supreme - the mighty poleaxe!
The poleaxe was as grim a piece of medieval battle kit as was ever invented, the weapon of choice for many medieval men-at-arms, it was lethal combination of blade, spike, and bone-crushing hammer.

Made my first halberd 50 years ago ….second only to a claymore . I still carry a modified fire axe in the door of my truck.

What was the primary motion used on the battlefield? I would imagine the density of the melee means mostly the spike is used like a spear.

But man, the interviewer is such a dork. Terrible. I love it.

    It’s called a pollaxe, not a poleaxe 🤓.
