"Under the PRRT, companies are liable to pay a tax on profits generated by gas projects, but only once the up-front costs of developing those facilities have been paid off."
A discussion on this clause would be very interesting.

That’s the fault of our politicians, who are supposed to develop policies around how these energy companies operate, charge domestic customers and pay taxes. We all know that minerals and gas are a gravy train, but not for the country, only for politicians and corporations. How many of our ex-politicians accept board memberships and other extremely well-paying jobs in the mining and energy sectors, once they leave politics.
The resources of Australia belong to and must benefit all. If I find gold, gas or oil on my property I apparently don’t own it, the state owns it. If the state owns it then the people of the state should all benefit, not just corporations and politicians.

Let's just say that I have been given the authority to go make/change laws.
My mate down the road sells bannans, he gets crook, employs someone to keep selling bannanas.
Just like everyone else, he gets a rego renewal but can't afford because he's employing someone to keep the turn over going, but really needs that vehicle to keep the business going.
Now my friend comes over for a beer on Friday evening, tells me his story and I say, no worries mate, I can sort that out using my authority and powers, even though everyone else owning a vehicle has to pay their dues.
At some later point in my career I decide to quit my job.
I still have a beer on Friday night with my mate and tell him my story and BINGO! The favor is returned. I now have a job managing a banana company.

  • @dhufishhunter6455

Please stop referring to royalties on gas and minerals as a tax, they are not. They are a unit cost price that resource companies are supposed to pay to the state to allow them to extract said resource. The resource companies have been muddying the waters by saying that they pay taxes in the form of royalties and thus don't need to pay any other taxes. Royalties are simply what the government sells the resource, owned by the people of the state, to the resource companies.

Who negotiated this deal? Australia has an energy shortage and yet we are not profiting from our own natural resources, at least 25% of that gas should stay in Australia for the benefit of the people. For example, LPG vehicles work and run clean but our DH government and bureaucrats want us to drive electric, gas is much cleaner for electricity generation so if these companies paid their fair share of tax and royalties then Aussie power bills would plummet.

There are no shortages of anything. We have the technology today to create an abundance of EVERYTHING. The problem is, our economy, our systems of value are based on scarcity and rarity. When there’s an abundance of everything, our economy will collapse- that’s why domestic gas prices in WA are so high - manufactured scarcity. To maintain our economy we now have to manufacture scarcity to keep prices high - same applies to food, housing, etc etc

Australian gas is exported tax-free or very little taxes from American companies. Imagine if the Australian government nationalized the industry to benefit its citizens - it would be deemed a national security threat to the US and Australia would face sanctions.
For decades countries around the world had 2 options, either bends to America's will or face the consequences.
Some countries have had enough of the big bully across the Atlantic and start to fight back and Australia isn't one of them, instead we blame China our largest trading partner.

  • @iantag

Your central point about modest royalty payments (today) is a valid one. Given that much of this gas was considered stranded for 50+ years various gov'ts DID provide incentives to get an industry started - so now the only argument has to be: Its time to claw a bit of this back and demand some royalties going forward. (Royalties paid to Qatar dwarf what we get - for similar volumes- however Qatar gas was 'easier' to develop). There are however two points that I think need to be made: 1. Most of the gas is in Federal Waters (Not state). WA claim to this gas is moot. 2. The Australian Domestic gas market chose (largely) not to invest in the foundation gas projects or commit to long-term contracts at a set price (thinking they could get a better deal). Now they are crying poor. They have to suck it up!. Lastly - the idea Australian companies could develop this gas by themselves is not a valid proposition.
