The resource companies have been muddying the waters by saying that they pay taxes in the form of royalties and thus don't need to pay any other taxes. Royalties are simply what the government sells the resource, owned by the people of the state, to the resource companies.
Simple. No benefit - close them down. Unpaid taxes, breaking the 15% requirement, simple enough to argue. Little loss to the state, so why not? Close or threaten to nationalise, they'll come to the table quickly.
I worked in child protection group homes our budget for Christmas presents.. $50 per kid. Staff pay out of their own pocket for presents because the government doesn't have enough money.
Who negotiated this deal? Australia has an energy shortage and yet we are not profiting from our own natural resources, at least 25% of that gas should stay in Australia for the benefit of the people. For example, LPG vehicles work and run clean but our DH government and bureaucrats want us to drive electric, gas is much cleaner for electricity generation so if these companies paid their fair share of tax and royalties then Aussie power bills would plummet.
Thank Alan Carpenter for WA gas reservation policy. The only former Labor premier with half a brain. Current Labor policy of replacing reliable 24/7 gas and coal with intermittent unreliables will lead us into energy poverty and Industry destruction and massive unemployment!
This is one of many reasons I'm so disappointed in the current government's performance, they continue to enable corporate greed at the expense of the consumer.
Not just current government, previous as well and next one ( Dutton recently flew over to WA for Gina the oligarch's birthday)why is their oligarches in Oz ? Tiny amount of royalty paid + no tax paid.
@clivemorant no argument there, Clive. For me, the difference was that I had hoped for something different from the ALP, whereas with the LNP, it's precisely their policy to enable corporate greed. Unless the ALP is passing policies the people want, I think it's better if independent and green reps hold more power to influence the passage of legislation. Keep the bastards honest.
I'm wondering if the deal that Australia made with the gas companies was revealed to the public (and explained) before any agreements were signed? Public land belongs to the people, not the government. We need to have a greater say.
If ANYTHING produced here is sold overseas for less than we can buy or get it here ... we're being screwed. France has a law that a certain % of the champagne vintage must be available for sale in France ... 😊🇦🇺
There are no shortages of anything. We have the technology today to create an abundance of EVERYTHING. The problem is, our economy, our systems of value are based on scarcity and rarity. When there’s an abundance of everything, our economy will collapse- that’s why domestic gas prices in WA are so high - manufactured scarcity. To maintain our economy we now have to manufacture scarcity to keep prices high - same applies to food, housing, etc etc
Australian gas is exported tax-free or very little taxes from American companies. Imagine if the Australian government nationalized the industry to benefit its citizens - it would be deemed a national security threat to the US and Australia would face sanctions. For decades countries around the world had 2 options, either bends to America's will or face the consequences. Some countries have had enough of the big bully across the Atlantic and start to fight back and Australia isn't one of them, instead we blame China our largest trading partner.
Your central point about modest royalty payments (today) is a valid one. Given that much of this gas was considered stranded for 50+ years various gov'ts DID provide incentives to get an industry started - so now the only argument has to be: Its time to claw a bit of this back and demand some royalties going forward. (Royalties paid to Qatar dwarf what we get - for similar volumes- however Qatar gas was 'easier' to develop). There are however two points that I think need to be made: 1. Most of the gas is in Federal Waters (Not state). WA claim to this gas is moot. 2. The Australian Domestic gas market chose (largely) not to invest in the foundation gas projects or commit to long-term contracts at a set price (thinking they could get a better deal). Now they are crying poor. They have to suck it up!. Lastly - the idea Australian companies could develop this gas by themselves is not a valid proposition.
The Australian Citizen/Tax Payer = Serfs to Multi National Corporations. The Australian Government/Politicians = Career opportunities for serving Multi National Corporations. Bring back free markets. Encourage true grit, entrepreneurialism, competition and innovation.
Gough Whitlam wanted to nationalise our natural resources, but the Australian people voted against it. 😂😂😂 Lucky for Whitlam because the USA/ CIA murdered the President of Chile for the same reason. 😂😂😂.

Gaslit? About time! We've got all the bloody stuff, so why not??!!
Both sides of politics are complicit.
It all started with the Court Liberal government
Simple. No benefit - close them down. Unpaid taxes, breaking the 15% requirement, simple enough to argue. Little loss to the state, so why not? Close or threaten to nationalise, they'll come to the table quickly.
As a west aussie voter all I can say is... GRRRRRR!
The deal was made by Hawke & Keating, so labor won’t do anything to change that.
Amazing. How could I not subscribe?
Thank Alan Carpenter for WA gas reservation policy. The only former Labor premier with half a brain. Current Labor policy of replacing reliable 24/7 gas and coal with intermittent unreliables will lead us into energy poverty and Industry destruction and massive unemployment!
this should be a nation scandal!
Why do we do this ffs!
what an absolute rort when are people going to demand change
The people of Western Australia allowed this to happen so what are they complaining about !!
Things like this that make me realise i need to change my vote, what is happening in Oz
Most of us have known this for a couple of years but we can't do shitt!! Our Australian gov us corrupt. Tax is theft.
If it didn’t cost Chevron so much to build the gas hub, gas would be much cheaper , thank the Unions again.
Meet the 15% or send them to gaol
Yes! Thats the spirit! Vote 1...WA succession!...what do we need the eastern states for. Why do we need to be their cash-cows.
All natural resources must be under direct democratic community control, and 100% of profits must be directed to domestic infrastructure.
Gough Whitlam wanted to nationalise our natural resources, but the Australian people voted against it. 😂😂😂 Lucky for Whitlam because the USA/ CIA murdered the President of Chile for the same reason. 😂😂😂.
He still signed us up to the Lima agreement though. Changed our Constitution and sold us out. Everyone after him toed the Globalists line.
Do not try to split Australian states as individual countries
How long will the gas reserves last at this rate
But at least the WA puppeticians are get well paid out of it.
Ha!
You think that's bad?
It's even worse in the eastern states where we don't even get a domestic gas reservation and we pay many multiples the price for gas than they do in WA.
