Love this kind of Black Woman Soul Music. Soul Music was crushed out in 1974. I miss it. Very few black folks even know how to create harmony anymore. We are all riding on this fake ass digital grid now...with clap tracks. These women take me to celestial heights. Frank Zappa said that, "Real music is now illegal."
I would hve killed to hve been old enuff to see this! Unfortunately, I was 2...lol They were NO JOKE! My favourite female singer! The female James Brown! Funny. She was 27 and still sounds like that at 73. That was real singing and performing!
For Labelle fans, great to see their transition look -- after the matching dresses and wigs of the Bluebelles but before the leathers and feathers of the Glam rock era. Colorfully Afrocentric. Always passionate.
They Are Fire 🔥!!! They Do R&B, Funk & Rock 🎸 And The Soul Music Of Soul!! The Bluebelles And Later To ( LaBelle ) From Their Spacey Outfits ( To ) Their Black Roots - Of SOUL The Essence. Mrs. Patti LaBelle - The God Mother Of Soul.

justbroadway the documentary about the program (Mr. Soul) is part of the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and is being shown at a few movie theaters here in NYC this week. I really loved that show back in the late 60s and early 70s. It was one of the few shows where you could see some of Soul musics legends performing live on tv. Labelle appeared on the show a number of times as the Bluebelles and then as Labelle in the 70s
I'm just lost.... I can't stop watching this.... absolutely mesmerised and in awe of the power of Patti, Nona and Sarah...aka Labelle. There are no words to explain this performance. Patti was on fire here....I so wish I was in that audience. Love IT! Thank you for posting.

Labelle did not play! In all of these live performances it is clear that these ladies came to sang, take names and slay!!! Today it's all about theatrics, choreography (with the dancers doing most of the work) and costumes. All of that is okay except the actual singing is treated like an afterthought.

Jarrett Mason: This may have been the segment of "Soul!" that aired October 20, 1971 - the one from November 22, 1972 was hosted by Gerry Bledsoe and was part of "the Shades of Soul Part 2" broadcast that also featured Mongo Santamaria (elsewhere on RUclips) . But, nonetheless, I thank you for capturing it!
I think you right because the music they sang in this appearance predates the music they recorded that they sang in the 72 appearance. Did you see the documentary that came out about the show Soul? It is called Mr. Soul. It is based on the show but primarily on Ellis Haizlip. I just saw a screening of it at the Apollo theater in nyc. It is about 2 hours long and includes lots of clips from the show including Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles, the Last Poets, Ashford and Simpson, Stevie Wonder and many others. It was a great film
Mr. Labelle himself, Noodleydoo, hasn't seen this. I thought you were the origin of all the bootleg Labelle videos I acquired back in the day. I happened to see this once by request at The Library of Congress. :-)
First off, I can't tell if you are joking or being nasty and I don't have a clue who you are. Second, I never posted any "bootleg material"--I asked permission of the content creators, and they told me I could. Third, I made copies of several Labelle performances at my own expense and gave them out to fans, again with permission. Next thing I knew, one of these "fans" was selling those tapes on EBAY which pissed off the content creators who now will not let me give out any more material (and believe me, I have things you wouldn't believe). I took down all my Labelle stuff from RUclips. It just takes one jackass to ruin things for everybody. Hope he's happy.
Heard it all before, B.C. including the part about the huckster(s) who tried to profit from your kindness and dedication to Labelle, particularly Nona. I would never confused you with the profiteers. You're good people. And I honestly thank you. That everyone can appreciate in Labelle's legacy, and the ladies of Labelle get there due, financially and artistically, are all that matters to me.
Patti was always a soprano. Listen to those records and performances from the 60s. She just used her mid and lower range in the Labelle and early Patti LaBelle songs. Have you ever caught her here in Philly during the James Cleveland Mass Choir performance as a bonus? Patti sang as she pleased and her high notes were always there.
In most groups the lead singer would sing alto. And the other would harmonize with them. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t sing anything else they just had to get that fit right.
High belter, the problem with the WPA is that they no longer allow the general public to purchase videos from them. I think you have to be in the entertainment industry so I am unable to replace the video. The way it worked before was that you would pick the performances you wanted and they would make the CD and send it to you. They would charge per performance so I had virtually all of the Labelle performances from their appearances on Soul. I wish I could get them back. The quality was very good
+Frankie C Right, it seems like most places with old clips work that way; they only will license them for commercial or creative projects (not to people who are just big fans :-( ). That's such a shame you lost that CD! I actually had a good DVD a few years ago that someone made me of rare Labelle performances on the Midnight Special, and then managed to drop it and scratch it badly. And then couldn't get another copy. So I know the feeling lol.
+highbelter I thought it might be because of the Soul documentary that they were raising $ for ( that seems to have gone nowhere) but what you say makes more sense

It's interesting that the first song they do, "Brand New Day," is not on their first album like the other songs here. Jarrett, any chance you have the episode where they do "Won't Get Fooled Again" from their second album? :-) Have been looking for that forever.

Highbelter. I lost a cd that I purchased from the WPA Library. They had all of the Labelle appearances from the show "soul" and you could ask for and purchase any of the performances. I had this, 4 women and won't get fooled again. The quality was much better than this video but it was in black and white. Unfortunately I lost it and WPA no longer offers this stuff to the general public. If I remember correctly, once they became Labelle, it was unusual for them to do songs in live appearances that were not on their albums such as 4 women and Brand New day. For this reason, I wish I could find that CD.
