Fabulous job there Nina, she will be very happy in that pot for the next several growing seasons It's a whole wapping 11C here and pouring rain so hard I can hardly hear you over the speakers on my laptop. Love how you think like an orchid… be it horse, dog, or orchid-therein is how the “magic” happens (in my opinion & experience 😊) Your dowiana hasn’t flowered yet, but she is gorgeous! At the moment the focus in my collection is on lighting.. in my tiny newbie mind I’m loving the color of her leaves.. having 2 summer bloomers here with leaves that look chlorotic/splotchy 🌱🌸🩷 Thank you for the great video 🥰
🌸🥷🏼 Bette San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good afternoon, from sunny S'ern Spain🫶🏼 yes, I fully agree... if at all possible, trying to put ourselves into the shoes of all living things that we care for, makes a big difference in understanding needs (hopefully being able to provide and nuture accordingly) My warm growers need to grow some fur during the winter though 🤣 if you would like to try and give your summer bloomers an extra soak of Epsom Salts, I have a video for that which I can link for you. By the sounds of it, you have a little magnesium deficiency going on with them, and that is an easy fix 👍🏼 ruclips.net/video/r-N471wGL7A/видео.html I am not trying to steal anymore of your precious time, on a day that I hope is going great for you, but... just in case you would like to have a look see 🫶🏼 the link is there as and when you need, or have time! Thank you, ever so much, for your time watching this video, and your wonderful comment as well as, you pledge here supporting the orchids being an 🌸🥷🏼 Bette San! Wishing you a fabYOUlous rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Thank you Nina! I will definitely look at your link! Thank you again.. I said magnesium deficiency also, and treated with 400 ppm epsom salts, then flushed same day. The seedling is in NZ Sphagnum, the bloomer is in bark sphagnum pumice charcoal coco coir chunks. The seedling was given some “sips” of epsom, then a bit of rain water. They are in lower light now-seedling responded with continual dark green, and the blooming adult is slowly improving, she’s a new bloomer and I believe both were in too high light condition and the bloomer got double depleted when she flowered and put out another bud (which my wee granddaughter removed lol. I wasn’t lol at that time lol). which was a bit puny. I’ve upped the Epsom in regular watering to 20 ppm, seeing good results. The bloomer definitely needs another treatment. I like looking at beautiful foliage, and at my infant orchid stage, late in life, I feel the orchid roots should be beautiful, the foliage the same, the flowering is a reward for a job well done. When I sewed, my creations were beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. Methinks we may be kindred spirits, my new friend. Thank you for taking your time out to respond, it’s so very much appreciated! Now I will watch your video you were so kind to link! Have a fantastic day on God’s green earth 🌏 💥☀️🌨️✨🌸
😍Hi Dawn! 💐 it is so good to see you and thank you for leaving a positive comment! Truly appreciate your time watching the video 🫶🏼 hope you are having a beautiful Friday ❤️🌸
How nice to see you working on a Cattleya dowiana! I have 2 in my collection: one growing in tree fern fiber, the other in small lava rock. To my amazement they are both doing well. When I first got them I would follow the advice of Ed@Ed's Orchids. His videos helped me make it through the process of getting them acclimated to my climate and growing conditions. Returning to your video: I enjoyed seeing you work with the roots and repot this beauty into a larger pot. It will be amazing when I see that you have posted a video showing its flowers. Are you ready for today's question? I grow some mature cymbidiums in an organic potting medium. I recently purchased a couple of seedling Cymbidiums (and, yes, they are the hot growing varieties) and am thinking about potting them in small lava rock or horticultural pumice. Any thoughts about this idea? Finally, I must tell you that I watched a bonsai video recently in which it was mentioned that potting orchids in a mixture of small pumice, akadama and perlite was "the perfect" growing medium for some orchids. Ideas for my future repotting? Your orchid videos are some of my favorites on RUclips. Thank you for all the efforts that you take to make them so informative and professional. May you enjoy your day.
Hi Pat 😍 💐I hope you are having a beautiful day, already! 😊Thank you so much for taking a moment out of your Friday, to watch the video and leave a comment! Truly appreciate your time! 🫶🏼I am glad that your dowianas are doing well in the 2 different media. As mentioned in one of my live streams, I don't find them hard to grow.... until I have further information as to what it takes for them to bloom, I believe, they may be hard to get to bloom and that is what people interpret as 'hard to grow' - more on that if and when I get mine to bloom 😊 When thinking of potting any orchid up in lava rock, I always take the following into consideration: how is my future repot going to be? Will it affect the roots in more of a detrimental way with the choice of media, or what are the chances of one substrate being more gentle on the roots than another. So, as you have seedlings, I would start with pumice. When they mature and are ready for repotting into a larger pot, you can opt for lava rock, but these orchids grow incredible root systems, and uppotting has it's limits. One day, you will have bulbs in the middle and the orchid grows in a circle form leaving leafless bulbs in the middle. One day, you may want to clean that up and then the lava rock is going to be a tough repot / dividing situation without shredding the root system. I have to revamp my cymbidium and she is in leca! Leca is more forgiving, but the root systems of cymbidiums are aggressive and I believe that what I am in for with my cymbidium, it is going to kick my butt! So, for now pumice, and at a later stage, always plan for the future when potting an orchid up in the moment. I have used akadama for my orchids, especially my slipper orchids and I have used it as a surface humidity provider as well, AND for my Bletillas. If you would like to have a look at a video I did many years ago, ruclips.net/video/ZCBnC9R-6P0/видео.html an oldie, but this is where I talk about akadama v seramis and it possibly be an option for other orchid growers. Thank you so much for your kind and positive feedback on my videos. It means a lot and is very encouraging... I really appreciate the comment because some videos can take up to 8 hrs to complete the editing, and that does not include the uploads, so... thank you, Pat! Really! It is super kind of you to tell me your thoughts on my work 🫶🏼🙏🏼 ❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Thanks so much for answering my question. When I purchased my Dowianas I was told by everyone that I would be lucky to be able to keep them alive. I am so happy each time I look at those orchids. They haven't flowered yet, but I will remain hopeful. I purchased two cymbidiums which are now potted in pumice. (Thanks for answering my question.) I removed all the sphagnum and discover both had "fat" roots. One had a couple of spots on roots that were rotten so I removed those sections. Also bought one grammatophylum/cymbidium hybrid for which I also removed the sphagnum to discover very healthy roots. This one I put in a larger pot because I feel that the grammatophyllum genes will give this plant plenty of large, healthy roots. It is now in pumice as well. The last is a Clowesia. This one I potted in tree fern fiber. Appreciate that you took the time to give me a link that I can watch this weekend. I'll let you know when I have viewed it. Lastly, I truly do believe that you present very educational, well-planned, professional quality videos. That should be celebrated and commended! (This is probably the 32 years of experience teaching high school students and heading 14 teachers in my department that comes out. It's part of my personality after all those years. Boa noite Nina. Estiveste replantando tua Catleya num vaso novo com leca, como colocas o adubo Remix na água das orquídeas? Qual a proporção?
Hello Nina! What a great repot! Your repot video just reminded me to make one soon! A dendrobium repot tutorial since there's some of the people from the Facebook group (Orchids & Plants Enthusiasts) here in the Philippines are requesting a tutorial! Will definitely make one next week. Just in time for 3 of my new dendrobiums to be repotted! (4 dendrobiums supposedly because I just received one earlier, but the cocohusk it came with is wet and moldy so I needed to perform an emergency repot! Which I will upload soon as well! 🤣❤️
😍 Hi 💐 thank you so much for your time watching and for your kind feedback! I am so glad that your dens are settling in! Looking forward to seeing your repot video, amigo! If you wouldn't mind sharing my channel on the FB group, I saw your comment about paying bills, and I am right there with you! I am desperate to grow my channel so that the noose around my neck isn't as tight as it is right now! I hate asking, but I have to ask. It is ok if you prefer not to, I still think you are wonderful and thank you so so much for being here 🫶🏼 wishing you a great start to your weekend, my friend! ❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Hey Nina! Sure no worries, we've got each other's back and we'll do our very best to help each and everyone we can! Hoping that you catt doweiana bloom soon! 👀
Also Nina! I forgot to ask, or clarify... Is it correct that Lava Rock, unlike LECA / Hydroton, has no evaporative cooling right? I'm trying to get my facts right and I can't remember exactly if the lava rocks has or have no evaporative cooling. I can't find your video where you mentioned it 🤣
ruclips.net/video/HCiNoEOfo-0/видео.html here is the link to a video on leca vs. lava rock. It is pretty comprehensive, but it covers all the bases 👍🏼 thank YOU so so much! I smell of desperation, not Coco Chanel 🤣 it is so kind of you to be of the same mindset when it comes to having each other's back! 🫶🏼 thank you! I already have grey hair, so... I don't have to wait until my hair goes grey, but maybe the dowiana will bloom when I have false teeth 🤣🤣
Thanks Nina for sharing, another fine video from the Orchid Master. Been reading research on toxic build up of Phosphate in orchid pots. As you know it does not wash out of the pot. I'm thinking were giving our orchids to much Phosphate and Potash. Your thoughts. Thanks again.
🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good evening, good Sir!! 😍 first of all, I received your email, and oh my!! wow! Just Wow!! 🙆🏼♀️🫣🤪🥊🥳 thank you so much for taking the time to send me those beautiful bloom pics! I will reply, definitely will, however I cannot do it as soon as I would like because I just got home from a little 🚨🚨 and have to settled down before I can reply in the most appropriate manner that your blooms deserve! Congratulations, 🌸🥷🏼 I will be replaced as the Orchid Master 😆 there is such a thing 'Phosphate toxicity' yes. Now, this is very very rare, though! Usually, if this is an issue it happens because a pH down product (Phosphoric Acid) is used to reduce pH. AND used a lot, often which results in the locking out of other nutrients in the higher pH range. Do you use a Phosphoric Acid as your pH down? I would not think that you need to pH down much for your orchids considering that you are growing in organic media. Usually, your pot climate will take care of that for you. Let me know what you think of my spontaneous answer to your question and if that resonates at all with your research 🫶🏼 hope your day is going fabYOUlously for you!! AND, enjoy your STAN 👃🏼👌🏼 to the fullest! Thank you so much for watching the video 🌸🥷🏼 Amazing Friend San!! Have a wonderful rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸
Had the week off from work this week and the temperatures were still cool so I had a chance to do 15 repots! 😵💫 I uploaded a public video of my Den. Peng Seng in full bloom today. Found my first mealybug on an orchid while taking the video! 😱 Not sure how it got there since it was repotted. There were some white marks in-between the leafs which I cleaned when I got it but one might have been hiding. It was a really small one and I used the rubbing alcohol method with a q-tip to get rid of it.
Joe, hi 😍💐 15 repots!! I hope you gave yourself as many pats on your back 😊 feels good though, doesn't it?! I saw your video and those blooms are just out of this world stunning! Trust me, I sometimes only see bugs on my orchids once I have the images / video uploaded on my big screen. Then I stop what I am doing and go to the orchid to see if they are actually still there and deal with them right away! It happens! They are a menace and so sneaky! Many of my dendrobiums that have the light green foliage are very prone to mealy bugs, especially when growing new growths, so I am definitely on them on a regular basis. Sometimes, though, one or 2 escape, return, hide behind the blooms etc... as long as you saw it and got rid of it, hakuna matata! Thank you so much for watching this video, Joe! Hope your Friday is already fabYOUlous 🫶🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Just posted a video of my new cattleya collection if you would like to check it out, here's the link: ruclips.net/video/xC5zqtPIt7Q/видео.htmlsi=eJcy4CMGmDdaNvv2
Hi, Ninja. How are you? I really like Cattleya dowiana. I have the aurea variety and the rosita variety. But here in Brazil this species is not already adult. They are usually sold seedling. So, it's hard to find them already in bloom in collection. And here they are attacked by fungi very often. Suddenly a beautiful sprout sniffs and loses.
Roger 😍 HI!! 💐 I am doing well, thank you for asking! I hope that you are as well 🫶🏼 I have the aurea as a seedling as well, and she is TROUBLE! For me, anyway! I am not able to get her to grow well... she also isn't as happy to grow roots in my climate, so I am wondering if your aurea also isn't growing roots so well?? I am a fan of calcium nitrate for the dowianas. My dowiana mainly gets Calcium nitrate now that she is in active growth, my aurea, as well, when in active growth, but not at high levels because she is so small and I don't want salt build up in the pot. So, my aurea gets 100ppm of calcium nitrate, alternating with 100ppm of my orchid fertilizer. I find that the big dowiana really enjoys the calcium, so I am going to say that, maybe if you give your seedlings more calcium, they should be able to grow their new growths stronger and not fall victim to fungi! I hope that this gives you some help, Roger! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼 hope you are already having a great day ❤️🌸
Hey Nina! Am glad I came across this video of yours on Dowiana 😍 I saw a 2 year old Dowiana Aurea on eBay that is being auctioned in 3 days time. I’ll be putting my bid so wish me luck 🥰❤️💕 if you have further updates on this video please let me know 😍
Hi Agnes 😍💐 ooohhh!! I am going to keep my fingers crossed that you win the bid 🤞🏼 this orchid is doing great after the repot. Not rooted in, it is too soon to have that expectation, but I have all the roots growing into the pot that should, and the new growth in this video is a beautiful almost mature one, at present. I am super pleased with the progress AND that there was no post repot stress. She just kept doing what she did in the older pot and is now looking promising. No sheath though 😆 I think this orchid is going to take a few more years to figure out how much light I can give it, without burning the leaves, in order for it to bloom. BUT, I am glad that she survives and grows, regardless of the severe winters. Just grateful for that 😃 thank you so much for watching this video, lovely lady! Have yourself a fabYOUlous day and... 🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼🫶🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids I will let you know if I get it 🤞🤞this hobby is costing me more than an arm and a leg 🤣🤣🤣 so am being very choosy what I buy. Anyway maybe it’s for the best in case it dies on me while am on holidays☺️ Have a great weekend! It’s been crazy hot today 31 degrees and we’re not in summer yet 🥵🥵
@@agnes-m9m I am sorry that you did not get the dowiana, but wow... yeah... no....! I mean, from where I am sat, the stress of having paid that much for a seedling and then be concerned about it during your vacay, its not worth it! Time away and vacays should be fun and having bought something recently for that amount of money, would ruin your vacation to a degree. Maybe, right now its not what you want to hear because you really wanted the dowiana, and I was hoping that it would be your's, but, I think the universe did you a favor there 😘as I am one that does super well the hotter it gets, I like the temperature you are referencing 😅 hope your day was fabulous 🫶🏼❤🌸
Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I can't pot an orchid this size into lava rock for several reasons, physical being one of them and cost the other. No tengo dinero 🫣😬 but, mainly physical! My mobility is going downhill, and this one gets schlepped in and out every winter, sooooo 🤪 but, if all were tickety boo in my world, I would have changed it to lava rock, so you are on the 'same page'! 🌸🥷🏼 Director Jose San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 Good afternoon, amigo mio!! Espero que tu día esta relajante y que tenías tiempo para aprovechar tus orquídeas 🫶🏼 thank you so much for your email! I will get to it later today... am trying to make sure that I don't get caught up with distractions before my live stream in approx 55 minutes. Yes, I am watching the clock 😅 I am always apprehensive before live streams because so many moving parts, but it is nice to take a breather and respond to your kind comment and thank you so much for watching 🌸🥷🏼 Amigo San! 🫶🏼❤️🌸
Fabulous job there Nina, she will be very happy in that pot for the next several growing seasons It's a whole wapping 11C here and pouring rain so hard I can hardly hear you over the speakers on my laptop. Insane man. We are expecting 6 cm of rain over night. I think it is all falling now. Have a good day my friend.
🌸🥷🏼 Samurai Julie San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good evening, beautiful! I hope that you are nice an snug in your beautiful orchid home and that Hapi is keeping you warm with snuggles! 😘 while it is great to get rain after such a long period of drought, it can get scary to get that amount of water in one go, when the ground is hard as nails and not ready to absorb that amount of water! I hope you all stay safe, amiga mia! Thank you ever so much for taking a moment out of your R&R time, 🌸🥷🏼 Samurai Guuurrrllfriend to watch the video 🫶🏼 I hope you got my email and that you are at ease 😘 have a cozy rest of your night and some good night's rest 🫶🏼❤️🌸
Love it! 👏🏽❤️ 🪴
Good work should always be CELEBRATED!)
Hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy some quality time in your garden as I will (with my canine companion).😀
🫶🏼🙏🏼 Live stream in approx 30 minutes, so I am gearing up for that, but at least it is a warm day on the patio and all the 'chiddos are taken care of.... you have yourself a great weekend as well! Canine companions are the best imo! Mine are currently chilling at my feet 🐾❤️🐾❤️ your kind words are very much appreciated, Pat 🙏🏼
I'll be sharing and recommending your channel to the group later in the evening or tomorrow in the morning! 💚💚💚 thank you so much for sharing your time and experiences here as well!
I uploaded a public video of my Den.
It doesn’t help that the orchids here even the seedlings are so damn expensive 🥲😩😩 me and the rest of the orchid world am sure feel so lucky to have you 🌹💕🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
it is an expensive hobby, yes! I am not even able to afford lights or putting on the heat mats during the winter. So, my collection has to deal with circumstances that are very challenging for the orchids during the winter, and anxiety inducing for me 🫣 I am going to keep my fingers crossed that you get her, at the budget line that fits for you and that she arrives safe sound and healthy. I am blessed to have orchid friends like yourself on my channel ❤️ thank YOU!! 🫶🏼 have a beautiful rest of your day 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Hi Nina! Sad news I missed out on that auction for Dowiana 😢😢😭😭 that sneaky bidder out in their bid during the last few seconds and it got sold for $178 can you believe that!??
I don't know why, but I was expecting you to change it to lava rock. I'm getting mad at my dowianas, they just flat out refuse to put up a sheath.
We are going to get our's to bloom, mu friend!! Seeing your bensoniae on the move gives me hope that we are going to get our dowianas to bloom one day as well 😘 hope you are having a fabYOUlous Friday, already! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸
