I remember when the old quilt police said that we had to hand quilt 12-15 stitches to the inch. And I got very good at it. But it wasn't until about 10 years ago that I saw Liz Porter from Fons&Porter do hand quilting in big stitches. And to me they were huge. Right then I thought I will do whatever I want in the future and not care what others opinions were. And THAT's made me a better quilter. Nice quilt by the way.

I think if you gift a quilt ,nobody says look at those stitches.I am sure that your quilts are beautiful, and the recipient is happy. Because if the police looked at my machine stitches, they would see plenty of mistakes.

As an experienced big stitch quilter, you really made life difficult for yourself.
The back stitch is very simple just do a tiny stitch then back stitch over that one hiding the small stitch underneath
Do not use floss, use Perl cotton number 8 no Ned to walk and it will run through the work so easily.
Then you can quilt without marking. Your eye will get very used to it and go right the way through. It gives a much nicer feel to the quilt and finally you can quilt on your lap. Just pick up your quilt put it on your sofa with you and enjoy a film or Netflix and give it a go. The colours on the back are the colours that you have chosen so you won’t see them on the back.
Finally big stitch quilting is essentially a running stitch and the way to get even stitches is to stitch away from you and put several on your needle all at one.

Love your quilt and the big stitching. Just one tip from an experienced embroiderer and cross stitcher. Lick the needle eye not the thread. The thread will expand when wet, but when you wet the eye of the needle the thread will want to soak up the wet and, thus will move through the eye of the needle.

First I want to offer congratulations on the grandchild! That's enough to make you go down a rabbit hole of quilting. The center of the quilt is definitely the star of the quilt, I would keep the clown border simple because as you said it really won't show much. It also can't compete with the center diamonds. It's so fun to see your quilt, newly made look vintage, probably not the intention but I love it!

I absolutely love the big stitches on that quilt. What a difference it made, looks amazing. I would definitely free motion quilt the large outer border with bubbles to represent balloons. I have no advice atm for the inner black border. I’ll have to ponder that for a minute. The quilt is just beautiful. Congratulations on the new grand baby.

Love what you did with this quilt. It is so happy and bright, perfect for a baby. I would not hand stitch the black or clown border. I would stitch in the ditch on the black to make it stand out more
and do something simple like straight stitching for the clown border. Well done! Enjoy your channel so much........Hugs......Barb

So much love went into this quilt. My only suggestion is when separating the strands of floss, I was taught to take each string by pulling it out of the 6 that you cut. That way it won't knot and the strands will lay flatter when quilting. Congratulations on the new grand baby and beautiful work on the quilt.

Beautiful quilt. A work of art, every stitch made with love. It😮 reminds me of things I’ve made for my grandchildren and when finished I’ve said, “Never Again”. Maybe you cd consider, for your borders, taking a shape from the clown fabric… say a ball or a hat….and long arm them in, or maybe the technology within your machine has got shapes you cd use…. Small circles for eg. I wdnt go for leaves or stars, I wd go for something that is in the clowns. And, I thought that if you had started stitching your squares….1 stitch down from the start….you would have had the space for your back stitch. Nevertheless you have done MEGA FABULOUS WORK. When I’m doing close work like this I can be heard to mutter, “man on a galloping horse”….. many times…… well, a man on a galloping horse wd never notice my wee mistake and in the normal scheme of things, every day rough and tumble etc, little slips of our needles go un-observed. (Except, maybe by the holder of the needles). I used to knit Aran designs and sometimes I spotted a mistake long into the pattern…. too far in to unpick…only I noticed it so it was given up to the man on the galloping horse .

Love the diamond (harlequin) layout! Here's a tip for those who don't like to eyeball for the join: Marti Michell's Deluxe corner trimmer is the Swiss Army Knife of corner clippers. The 45 degree angle will blunt the tips and provide a perfect, no-guesswork alignment. Also when joining the seams for your r/c's, there is a perfect 1/4 dot to help mark alignment. Saves alot of ripped stitches.

Your quit is beautiful. I was taught not to make big stitches in my hand quilting. I can still hear Mom saying, "She made stitches so big you can hang a toe nail in them." Threading the needles (while sitting on the floor under the quilt frame) became my job, when Mom found out I could thread a needle. How she thought I could see well enough to thread a needle under there Is something I have never understood. However some of the other children helped me thread those needles. We were all under there to keep us out of trouble.

I love this, Tracy!! You have such great projects.
FMQ the borders. Big Stitch quilting will not show and it’s a wasted effort.
Another reason to FMQ is to help stabilize near the edges where you started and stopped. The buried threads will remain buried because the batting is not shifting when the quilt is moved around.
I love this fabric! So cute! No grand babies for me but I’m not upset about it.

For the large border, I see overlapping large scallops, echoing the festoons of bunting you might see draped around the ring at the circus.
•Then a simple, regular, smaller sine wave in the black border.
It feels good to have the curves at the borders to complement the rest having straight lines.
•I’m sure you will have fun no matter what you choose. 😉🪡🧵😎

I like what another poster suggested about doing diamonds in the borders, smaller ones in the black using a lighter shade like dark gray. For the outer border I would be stumped by what color to use. I fussed just as bad as you about making sure points/corners were 'perfect' for my first born's quilt and it turned out to fit a king sized bed. The second born's quilt was "OPPS, oh well close enough" and that was only a queen sized unit. (Both kids were in their late 30s)

Hi Tracy!! I started a big stitch quilt before Christmas and life happened so I never finished it. I love this quilt. You did a fantastic job!! I see nothing wrong with using red floss that will show up on the black and just doing straight lines up and down the border

I think the big stitch in the center of the quilt is eye catching. I think free motion in the borders would create a nice balance.

I love your quilt Tracy. I also love to big stitch quilt. I'm concerned about no knots. Large stitches are easily caught with fingers. I don't use floss, but pearl cotton. Believe me with that your knots won't pull through once you get them hidden.😅 Congratulations on the addion to your family. The quilt should become a treasure to your daughters family.❤

I love this quilt! The big stitch quilting really works well on this quilt pattern.
I think you should free-motion quilt the outside border and maybe machine quilt some small diamonds on the black border with black thread on top and matching color thread on the back.
