    Thanks Tony! I forgot all about trying to find this for laughs and knowing my girlfriend would get a good laugh out of it too! I remember filming this and I was so nervous that I held back many facial expressions cause I don't like looking at myself when I smile.....so while filming this...I had that in mind knowing someday soon I'd have to see myself. Ugh! And at the same time nervous about my playing thinking that I'm not holding up to what I'm trying to show! Anyways!! What a nice surprise and a blast from the past!! Thanks Tony!
    I love the part with Frankie, Jimmy and Randy!! That was fun and those guys were sooooo good and made my little contribution sound so much better!! Thanks again Tony!!

    Craig, I had this video, and it was part of my study material! I played classical guitar since the age of 5. Up until that point I never held a pick before, and never played a rock song. My entire rock curriculum consisted of Van Halen 1 and 2, Yngwie Rising Force, Dokken Under lock and Key, a Paul Gilbert instructional, and this video!!!!!

    This video was a game changer that had the most profound effect on my playing through a revelation that *Craig Goldy* didn't talk about, but I could see him doing it with the double picking. I'd never noticed anyone using it before, probably for lack of such great close-ups. I remember spotting it and rewinding the tape and watching it over and over, frame by frame, paying close attention to what was happening: *pick angling* and *economy picking* (some call it "directional" picking), as well as picking with only the *very tip* of the pick (like a stylus gliding over the grooves of a vinyl record).
    I immediately began applying these approaches, especially the incredible economy picking (although I didn't know that name at the time) and noticed some of my most favorite guitarists using it, most notably TNT's *Ronni Le Tekrø,* my main guitar hero. Craig Goldy's close-ups here were my Rosetta Stone, the key to deciphering this ultra-important technique, which *Frank Gambale* taught extensively.

      Thank you tonemnster!
      Sorry I didn't go into detail about the picking thing....mainly because prior to that filming....all of my students wanted me to show them how....and then they couldn't and I just told them to do what comes natural to them and it will fall into place....and it did for them.
      And in the same way I pick just came naturally to me....this is because over years of drawing tiny circles to make the afros in my friend's favorite athlete drawings look real....so....it's kinda funny....but....I'm drawing afros when I pick!!
      Most of my friends in high-school where Afro-Americans....and my favorite athletes were too....so it just occurred to me....that when I drew a large picture....the afro was also larger....and in the 70's the afros were big....so to cover that large of an area and make it look real required tiny circles.....a lot of them....and this over and over, hour after hour over the years became natural to me.
      So when I picked up a guitar....and once I began to be able to play fast and go up and down the strings.....this technique if you will.....just came natural and I certainly didn't know what to call it....and none of my students could do it because it wasn't natural for them!!
      Thanks for the very kind words!! It means more than you know!!

    At 05:34 he talks about not liking to use a lot of effects. Truth is, he really isn't using that much, especially for the 80's. Craig is clearly a smart guy...he sets up his Marshall conservatively without overly hitting the preamp gain and tames the high end so It doesn't rip everyone's faces off. His use of the delay and pitch is just him controlling when he wants it rather than relying on the sound man. And the tube driver is great for kicking on for solos. I had never thought too much of Craig until seeing this video. It definitely changed my mind. Bravo!

      Thank you Steve! Such a very cool thing to say! Your kind words mean more than you know!! It all goes back to Blackmore....he never over did it with distortion...he was so precise and you could hear every note and even the space in between notes!! Which was a difficult one to get down! I learned the hard way that having low out put pickups ( those with high distortion cannot be dialed back or have any "choice" in how much distortion is being added ) with an amp that has two preamp knobs things can get dialed in so that things come out aggressive but with precision and bite on the low end which becomes way more "percusive" than "Puffy"! Thanks Steve!!

    • @SteveOuimette
      @SteveOuimette 2 года назад +1

      @@TCraigGoldy Craig, thank YOU for the reply, it's really nice to talk with another player who's into dialing his tone in like you do. You're absolutely right about high gain pickups (which is why I've always liked P.A.F. output pickups). The true sound of your guitar comes out and isn't "puffy" (perfect word!). And when it comes to the two preamp knobs, you certainly knew how to dial it in the right way. I think if Jim Marshall designed those amps he knew a thing or two about getting good tone. Most of us in the 80's didn't really understand, but you clearly did. In fact I've gone back to a bunch of your live videos and was blown away not only by your tone but your playing as well. So good! Do you still have that amp?

Tight, German engineering, lol. Never have played a TSL but I have played a DSL and thought it was pretty cool. For me it's either the early 70's non-master Marshalls or JCM 800's, and lately I've been using the HotMod v2 when I need a little more boost and it works great. Craig should have been a top name guitarist in the 80's, right along with lynch, Jake E Lee, and Demartini. In todays world of social media he would have been, he just didn't get the exposure. Back then I knew he was good and loved his work in Dio but after watching this, holy shit he is better than I thought, that rhythm playing is fantastic.

    When I first got an electric in middle school, I found a VHS of this collecting dust on the shelf at the music store where I took lessons. I knew who Dio was but I'd never heard of Craig, but I was hooked as soon as I saw that blue warlock and heard his intro solo. I got so much inspiration from this goofball's instructional video that I can never thank him enough for making it.

    CRAIG, if you see this i have a couple of technique questions: 1)when you do your doublepicking/accent picking/"spider hopping", are you always hitting the next string on a down pick even when DESCENDING (going from a higher string to a lower string)? 2)are you hammering on the first string of each sequence or picking every single note?

    this dude smokes, i saw him with dio at the spectrum in philly, i was in just the perfect spot an the floor to hear him very clearly over everything else, and his guitar tone has a kind of sizzle to it, a buzziness, (a good buzz, not a 60 cycle hum),that just stood out , very smooth creamy flow to it, (yes that's a lot of adjectives), it just filled the whole building, awesome
