Some good suggestions for formations - working out the various formations needed for different unit/base sizes has always been a bit daunting for beginners. Just on the topic of artillery/infantry frontages, the book really is at pains to explain that the number of figures themselves is immaterial to core game system. On artillery batteries, it specifically calls out the use of more than one cannon as common among players: "Some players will no doubt prefer to field their artillery with two or three guns in a unit rather than one, and this certainly does look impressive! When fielding artillery batteries in this way it is suggested the unit frontages conform to that chosen for small infantry and cavalry units where possible". It's pretty difficult to claim that the rules really proscribe one method over another. Likewise with infantry; 36 per battalion based with 15mm frontage per mini is again called out as a common variant that still conforms to the standard unit size.
If you've ever seen photos of the Perry twins' personal collection and the mixture of different basing systems to which they conform (which were essentially the miniatures for which black powder was originally developed by Rick and Jervis before Warlord games even existed) you'll understand why the rules aren't particularly beholden to one basing system.

I think it's good they provide a starting point and are very much open to interpretation based on players personal preference or their playstyle

Things don't change much. I recall using 24 figure infantry battalions and 12 figure cavalry regiments in the 1970s.

With a British brigade, all the battalions in the brigade when deployed would group all the light companies together under the command of a Major or the most senior captain also, if available and needed in that brigade, Rifle companies could be added, to fight with the light companies of the brigade but under the command of a rifles officer who’s task may be different from the skirmishers. ie specified targets such as officers, senior officers and Aides, or even artillery officers and men.
This is specifically to disrupt the chain of command.

Skirmishers, once deployed, were never reassimilated by their parent batallion.

Where do you get your magnetized bases? Or do you add the magnets by yourself? Thanks!
