If you want a general theme for the entirety of the show it is CHARACTERS CHARACTERS CHARACTERS. It is all about their lives, past, present and future. That is the beauty and the tragedy of Cowboy Bebop
One could say the general theme is closure. Except for Ed and Ein, the rest became kinda stuck in time after certain events in their lives. They started going through the motions without real purpose or even motivation other than getting to tomorrow. During the series they all are forced to face their past and only after doing so they can move on.
For the main cast sure you could say that but I am talking for every character even the smallest least important characters. Which is why I would say the theme is characters themselves because only the main cast (and not even all of them) gets closure.
I started to catch feelings for Cowboy Bebop when I watched Ballad of Fallen Angels, I fell in love with Cowboy Bebop when I watched Jupiter Jazz 1&2, and then my heart broke when I watched The Real Folk Blues 1&2. A true masterpiece. Enjoy these last 2!
Fun fact: The man who voiced Spike and the woman who voiced Julia are married IRL. Met during the show, became friends, and married some years later. Always thought it was cool that Spike and Julia got to be together in a way after all.
Funny how Suraj said at 21:11 they kinda created their own genre. The intermission in a few of the earlier episodes had a graphic that said "The work which becomes a new genre itself will be called...COWBOY BEBOP"
@@OroborusFMA Really? After having him say "When angels are forced out of heaven, they become devils. You agree, don’t you Spike?” in the Ballade of Fallen Angels you find that line too poetic for the character?
Oroborus somewhat, still a cool line before ending an old regime. Instead of some unoriginal, unimaginative line. Never have I heard something like that, telling someone they’re about to cry tears of blood.
@@OroborusFMA Vicious is very biblical. The theme of the character is based on alot of biblical stuff, like his bird. So being poetic is not really out of his character.
And here we are, the Beginning of the End Honestly, I think many would've liked more out of this story, not to say they aren't unhappy with what they got, but there are some things you have to carry with you after it's done Julia is not Spike's Wife, Julia was Vicious' girlfriend who Spike had an affair with Vicious begins the bite of the snake (in Jupiter Jazz the elders compared Vicious to a snake awaiting its time to strike), starting with a failed assassination of the Red Dragon elders, setting the wheels in motion Spike and Jet are attacked, and Jet is taken out early with a shot to the leg, so Jin will Fill In and deal with this Sin before it all gets sent in the Bin like all the shot bottles of Gin right Jin? We learn more about why people thought Spike was dead though, he wanted to leave the Syndicate, and Vicious tried to force Julia to kill him, the graveyard battle took place and Spike barely made it out alive Faye's learning a lesson she should've learned last episode, the Bebop is her Family! Though she's unaware that she basically convinced Ed and Ein to leave too. Interesting that Spike called on her before anyone. But Faye and Julia get a brief bonding moment fending off some assassins Obviously Julia knows that Faye knows Spike, the Bebop has them listed as crewmembers when they cross astral gate, it's all on record. That was a long pause there... Jet tries to convince Spike to let go of his past, but it's not that easy, to leave without confrontation. All of the crew faced their past to get over it, and now it's Spike's turn. It's really not a brother and sister kinda way, Watanabe makes a point of noting that something's there, they 'think of each other' from time to time The Snake's Venom takes hold, he even turned on his own Bird, making it a bomb as he completes his coup. And Finally, Spike and Julia reunite. I'd be up for Ed and Ein...but I'd also want the rest of the crew back
The theme of cowboy bebop is just life. It’s so episodic because that’s how their life is. Everyone in the show has their own sh*t happening that they can’t focus on any one person and dwell over it, and it’s about how they deal with it in their own way. It’s also about how they are all caught up in the past, Faye and her lost memories, jet and his life falling apart from his wife to his job and Spike and his past in the syndicate and Julia. They all run from their past until it eventually catches up to them. Ed is the only one in the bebop crew who is care free and oblivious because she is a child and hasn’t had life break her down like the others yet. And this same theme is seen in the side characters as they all deal with their own crap. Think about your every day lives. Is it a continuous story from multiple weeks at a time or is there something different every other day. Most likely the answer is the latter which is what the episodes of cowboy bebop are to the characters.
NOT A FLASHBACK, THAT'S PRESENT TIME. The stories and bounties on this show is the backdrop of just telling character stories. Overarching theme doesn't work because this show can do so many different styles and it's about telling stories. These aren't heroes or super special people, these are just people trying to get by day to day. One of the things that's makes the show so great.
Wild Horses, the episode with the Challenger space shuttle actually has a sad story behind it. The episode originally aired with the shuttle being labeled Columbia. However, Columbia broke up during reentry back in 2003. I remember that year Adult Swim skipped the episode during the nearly regular reruns of Cowboy Bebop. Years later for the Bluray release, the scenes with the shuttle were altered to label it Challenger. Unfortunately, someone didn't do their homework because Challenger broke several minutes after launch back in the 80s. So they tried to rename the shuttle to one that wasn't destroyed and changed it to another destroyed shuttle. They should have gone with Discovery, Atlantis or Endeavor.
@@OroborusFMA I'm pretty sure adult swim had nothing to do with change. They just didn't air the episode because of the accident. It was the remix collection that edited the shuttle's name. And whatever company had the distribution rights is responsible.
I'm not sure if there really is a before and an after Cowboy Bebop, but it certainly is a generation-defining legendary piece of television just like Twin Peaks before it or Breaking Bad, more recently. People will never let it go, as testified by how relevant it still is 20 years later. We sure did carry that weight, didn't we? ruclips.net/video/C-sYFirfywY/видео.html

"If you see...Spike again...tell him I'll be waiting for him there. That's all, he'll know what it means." What I love is that they never mentioned his name prior to Julia mentioning it. It isn't really clear as to how she knew and it doesn't have to be. It's such a subtle, yet good moment. Aside from the scene with Vicious & Julia, and the scene from the first episode mostly, nothing was a flashback or a backstory. Julia in the rain, Spike reuniting with here, it's all in the present. The big key here is the tone of coloring they use to show it. Part 2 by far in my opinion is an iconic finale to Cowboy Bebop.
I've often wonder what *The Normies* will be like in 20 years. . .same with *Blind Wave* and others. I would like to see that. Assuming I even live that long.
Man the level of craft and detail put into the characters and storytelling, the music, the art, can’t compare any of this to like dragon ball. It’s much better compared to American television greats like breaking bad, a story with interesting characters whose decisions and lives are explored. The rewatch value is high, going back and to episode 1 after knowing who Spike and Jet and Faye makes their choices make way more sense. Seeing Spike say “bang” for the first time while talking about death...ughhh
Like Ballad of Fallen Angels these final two episodes are permeated with an atmosphere of death. Or a second death, after dying. Since there is abundant evidence that Spike is dead, this a Purgatory, and he must work the events of his first death out before he can move on. After you see the movie it will become clearer.
