Struggling with my faith, and believing. I haven't been able to sleep because I lay awake feeling distraught and sheer terror of what if there's nothing and only oblivion after we die. I've asked the lord to reveal himself to me but I've been praying this for 20+ years.
Nice try, you've asked Him to reveal himself, but you didn't ask for understanding of what you see. When you find yourself alone in silence, you might hear your own inner monologue the best - maybe, you even have a habit to continuously talk to God in your thoughts. Did you know that at that moment, God is speaking back to you - right into your ears, even when you're busy and not paying attention or even when you talk to other people. The silence that you hear at that moment or in-between the words of your companions - that's God speaking to you. How else would the existence itself sound ? How do you plan on seeing all of the infinite existence and time at once if not by seeing through Its "eyes". In that case - there wouldn't be you anymore though, only God will remain. In Lord's own words: you will surely die. How can He reveal himself to you if you are just a little part within Him ? Look around: the floor you're on; the empty space between you and the walls; the food that you eat - all of that is in existence, it exists; in other words - it is God. Your own flesh is no exception. In the garden, the snake tempted the first men by promising that they will be like God himself. God made men in his own image also. In our minds we live a hundred lives, like God: we create worlds, many things - but none of those become reality, none exist because they are separated from the actual God, which is the existence itself. Under the weight of sin, the worlds in our minds become full of spite and sorrow - become hell. When your flesh will perish what will you be left with ? But when God speaks - it exists, He speaks reality. Try to imagine how is it to be dead or, in other words, to not exist ? - you can't imagine it. To experience - you have to be born, but you can't be born and experience "not existing" or not being born. It's a paradox. You cannot even "taste" it, that which gives you terror - it's simply impossible. God is revealed through His Word. Christ Jesus - is the Word of God, the Prince of Peace, Salvation. So, let go of your passions, your own free will and desires, ambitions - say before God that you don't need them, give them up. Exalt His Will and ask the Lord to make you a part of His Will and to give you His Peace, proclaim that, from now on, you refuse anything else and everything that is not of God's Will; that you'll refuse to make a step without His lead. Then, you'll be given such peace that you cannot explain with human language. And it won't leave you anymore, because you made sure to fully surrender to God and He won't ever give you up. You will feel it, then you'll know God. You just have to deny your self, He won't rip it out of your hands if you hold on to it - It's a choice you have to make.
