Threaded rod is to close to the edge of the concrete, on a hot day the rod will expand and the concrete will crack along the length of the rod, 25mm to 35mm of concrete should be around Re-bar, same should apply around threaded rod, Regards.

Would insulating the outside of the pier mitigate this?

When you poured your pier, why did you not pour it all at once?

Admittedly I should have. I was a bit worried about the concrete blowing out the bottom of the sonotube though.

@@FoFoAstro I'm definitely no expert at working with concrete, but I find it's generally too thick and dense to just flow out the bottom of a Sonotube. Though I've noticed in some videos on pier-building persons making the concrete really, really soupy. It probably weakens the concrete as it cures, but does make it easier to get smoother finishes.

Thanks Forest. Would have been nice to see you putting the support bolts into the concrete and how you get them in the correct spots etc. Also, how did you determine 34" height? You mention the height from the base of the mount to the top of the scope at the parked location, but that's not 34". Also, how did you determine the diameter of the sonotube to use? I don't know if I can even get sonotube in Australia. I'm not too worried about the height, since I'm just thinking of a pier and using a gizmo cover to cover the pier/mount. It'll mean I'll have to set the scope up each time, but that's easier than the entire thing. I am not able to build an observatory (yard problems and no money). My yard is *really* bad with obstructions to the South SCP (I'm in Australia, remember!) and obstructions to the West, East...North is pretty good. I also have a underground council pipe (water) going under our property (easement) so I'm not even sure if I can even put a pier in. Just a BAD property sadly.
    Cheers,
    Dave

I wish! I fly RC planes, helicopters, and drones, but no FPV.

Bolts are too close to the edge. I can it now, telescope falls of because cement cracked. You might want to install a metal band around the top of the cement pier
