    I'm getting a holland lop bunny soon and the bunny is around 3 months old. I'm purchasing the sherwood baby bunny pellets but what type of hay should I purchase and how much hay should i give my bun?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  6 лет назад +16

      2nd cutting timothy hay is usually well-accepted by most bunnies. Small Pet Select is a great place to buy a sampler box to try out the different types with your bunny. I would free-feed hay at all times. mbsy.co/q97PB

      I have 2 3 pound rabbits living together. Right now they share about 2 cups of veggies a day, 2 tablespoons of pellets mixed with a tablespoon of herb mix... and of course unlimited hay. Is there anything I should change?

    We have been giving Manapro . Eather way, we have been giving our rabbits Manapro since our daughters first bunny 8 years ago. I was told oats are only good for babys. I agree with you on Hay. The fresher the better. I found that our dumpings from changing the rabbits house sprouting in the spot it is dumped. I let it get about 6 inches and harvest it as a fresh treat. fresh dandylion greens are best when young. One treat my bunny really loves is willow leaves and young twigs. Your bunnys will LOVE you if you give them fresh willow leaves. Silver willow isnt as popular with them

    Thank you. We have just switched our neutered mix breed and 2mo old polish to Sherwood. As soon as I opened the bag I new it was very different than our previous Blue Seal 16!! The baby was on it before but our older is getting used to it. He eats a ton of hay anyways and its only been a few days.
    We also are excited about your Farmer Dave recommendation as I wanted to get better wood chews than Pet stores have here. They love chewing anything and everything!
    I agree on soy. We feed our egg layers a soy free since I am too sensitive to soy so made sense my bunnies not having that crap. And I never realized the other extras that were in previous feed.

      I have not eaten Oxbow, but if you send me a sample, I'll give it a go. LOL, just kidding. The newest Oxbow - Garden something - seems to be the best, as I believe it is free of soy, wheat, and fillers, but Sherwood is still cheaper and higher in fiber (can be purchased in bulk too). I definitely think Oxbow is the best bunny food that is available readily in stores.

    Can you do a video on toys you buy or make for them?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +5

      Good idea. Their favorite toys by far are cardboard boxes and paper towel/toilet paper tubes stuffed with hay. They also have plastic wiffle balls, balls with bells, Knot Nibblers, pine cones, and fleece fabric. When we have apple branches, we give them those too and they go nuts - just don't give them pesticide-treated apple branches.

    Thanks for the feeding tips! Our bunny, Bo, got gastric stasis a few years ago, so we are very careful with what we feed him now. Thankfully, we noticed at that time that he wasn't behaving properly and got him to the Animal ER in a hurry! I think his problem was eating too much alfalfa hay. We switched to timothy which helped. We also regulate how often and the amount we feed him. He LOVES the dandelion greens and begs for them in the mornings and evenings. I was wondering what else I could give him from the yard, and will perhaps try some of the plantain herb. What was the packaged salad mix you were using again? (I'm hearing impaired, and sometimes the RUclips voice recognition captioning doesn't work well.) Thanks!

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +4

      If you don't spray your yard with pesticides, you probably have quite a bit of plantain. You can always harvest, rinse, and dry it as well, as the bunnies love it crunchy too.
      The tub of salad mix was organic spring mix. Kale, romaine, and leaf lettuces are all great greens for bunnies. :)

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +1

      Hmm, I have never had that issue. My first thought is to try feeding leafy greens before feeding pellets so they are hungry. Plus, veggies digest faster and should really be fed first anyhow. Secondly, are they on a pellet that is full of fillers and sweeteners like molasses that makes them want to eat more and get stuffed?

      Each bunny gets 1/4 cup twice daily or more if needed. I only have one bunny per cage except moms/babies.

    I have a 9 week old Netherlands Dwarf and she will not eat any pellets. The breeder that we purchased her from only fed her pellets. We offer her an endless supply of Timothy Hay, fresh organic greens, and her pellets. She has not eaten one pellet in 3 weeks. I just ordered the Sherwood Bunny food and it is due to come in next week. If she continues to not eat the pellets, should I pull out some of the hay and fresh greens?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +1

      I would probably mix a pinch of raw old-fashioned oats into the pellets to encourage her to eat pellets. Eating hay is most definitely full of fiber and better than nothing, but she is missing a few nutrients. I wouldn't give her more than a thumb-size lettuce/greens leaf daily at that age. You might also want to talk with your vet about your concerns as well as the breeder you bought her from. Good luck!

    Hi I was wondering for Holland Lops if you had a fuzzy one like your frosty are the still able to show or is it a DQ and how do they get the fuzzy genes?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +2

      Some people show fuzzy Hollands as American Fuzzy Lops, but they can't be shown as Hollands. Fuzzy genes are recessive, so if two non-fuzzy parents carry it, some of the babies will be fuzzy. It's annoying as a breeder, but I believe Angora was introduced into the Holland gene pool when the breed originated in order to improve the fur condition. It's frustrating as a breeder, but they are adorable pets for people that have the time to groom every couple days.

    What are your thoughts on Oxbow pellets? I've seen a lot of breeders that recommend buying it before bringing home your bunny. I haven't seen you mention that brand though so I'm just curious.

    • @HooksHollands

      The last I checked, it had soy in it, which I try to avoid. That's why I use Sherwood brand.

    I'm getting a bunny I chose to get a doe because I researched that bucks spray their pee everywhere which one do you recommend? Please comment back and I love watching your videos too!

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +4

      Actually, bucks rarely spray unless you have other bunnies right next to their cage or in the area they play. Generally, bucks are a bit more mellow than does once they hit bunny puberty around 4-6 months, so that would be my pick. However, some does are exceptionally friendly and never go through a grumpy phase. Either way, getting the bunny spayed/neutered is key to keeping them from digging, spraying, mounting, and becoming grumpy. Usually around 5-6 months is when vets will perform the surgery. It is easier on bucks than does though. Hope that helps!

    Our rabbit refused to eat the sherwood food. We had to mix it in with the purina and then she ate it. The sherwood is very expensive, and we can get Purina show locally. We have new bunny that we may try the Sherwood again. I know it's so much better for them.

      Some bunnies take a week or two to switch to the Sherwood. It's kind of like weaning a child from Lucky Charms cereal to Wheaties. :)

    I give my fluppy 2 veggies and a little slice of fruit per day. He's super happy with apple/orange meat/seedless grape/pineapple/peach and other safe fruits, but a little bit is his limit. And he's totally not interested in apple sticks, also doesn't like strawberry😅😅

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  6 лет назад

      The only Oxbow food I would use is the Garden Select, as it has no soy. I still prefer Sherwood. I have never tried their hay with my bunnies, but bagged hay is usually not the best quality.

    Oh! I didn't know you could let the babies steal nibbles of mommas greens. I always put them in separate areas to give the babies more pellet and mom her greens. I think I'll try this and if babies aren't having gut issues we'll know right

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  4 года назад

      I've never had problems letting the babies have a few nibbles, especially if they are still nursing on mom some to help balance their gut flora. I wouldn't let them have more than a few nibbles though.

    Hello! I ordered some pellets from online, and when it came, the bag was torn open, so the pellets had spilled out. Do you think it would be safe to feed them to my bunnies? Thank you for anyone who answers!

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +1

      If the pellets were loose in the box with the box intact, I would still use them. If the box was torn and pellets exposed, I would probably not use the loose pellets and request a replacement.

    Hello! I recently got a Holland Lop and I was wondering at what age do you normally have your litter trained? She just turned 6 weeks old (she was way too young when we got her, the breeder wasn't very experienced and he kept her in poor conditions! She was also very sick but now she's much better!) and I put litter box in her cage but she uses her whole cage as a "litter box" even though I but her dropping and paper towels with her urine in there. Is she too young to be litter trained?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +1

      Mine are litter trained usually by four weeks, but bunnies are usually pretty quick to learn about where to urinate. I would just keep doing what you're doing, give her a couple litter boxes in the cage corners too. It is also possible that she could have been affected by the previous illness. You might want to check with a vet. Otherwise, just have patience and persevere. Then, when she's old enough, get her spayed, which may help facilitate litter training as well. Good luck!

      I definitely wouldn't choose to eat bunny food again, especially if given the choice of that or a cheeseburger, but I did it to prove how fresh and pure it is. Hopefully that point wasn't lost, LOL. :)

    so a woman who has had rabbits for year's told me that she only feeds her rabbits a hand full of Timothy one day once a week and one cup of pellets everyday. I'm very confused because I thought they needed hay everyday and I don't want to tell her she's wrong because her rabbits are healthy and happy. I don't know what to do.

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  6 лет назад +1

      All you can do is care for your bunny, as you'll likely never get someone like that to change their ways. It's not uncommon in the show world to have someone who only feeds pellets or uses hay as a rare treat. It's not a natural bunny diet to not include grass (hay), and unless the pellets have very high fiber, digestive issues are eventually likely.

    Do you have any opinions about the Oxbow rabbit pellets?

    • @HooksHollands
      @HooksHollands  7 лет назад +2

      When I last looked, Oxbow used soybean meal, soybean hulls, wheat middlings, molasses, etc. Plus, the freshness is questionable depending on where you buy it. Sherwood is about the same price and is milled fresh without the "junk" protein like soy. That's just my opinion. :)
