This production of Don Carlos was pure genius.... I went to Vienna on purpose to see it twice and wish other theatres would understand it and present it ....completely consistent, innovative, stimulating. And well sung, and well conducted.....
@@chriscann7627 What are usually describes as " stylish, new production " are not to my taste. It generally means there is no scenery and the cast wears the clothes in which they came to the theatre.

Wow, what a production! But, however controversial, Verdi remains great and his Don Carlos is given an outstanding performance in this production, from cast, orchestra, conductor.
I bought the DVD of this production on the strength of this scene. Not all of us need fake 16th century settings to appreciate the music and production.
True the music is beautiful but the scene is supposed to be sacred, showing their devotion to God.. as the heritic gets ked off to be burned at the stake. Check out the 2015 Opera Australia thecwueens costume is absolutely gorgeous.

Verdi's sympathies are entirely with the burned heretics, who are welcomed to heaven with an angelic voice, and not the institutional church that is attempting to sanctify and ritualize murder. That is perfectly echoed in the ritzy, champagne glass-clinking rich celebrating their privilege while prisoners in shackles are brought on stage. And by bringing the prisoners through the opera house itself and allowing the audience the freedom to mill about out front or in the auditorium, Konwitschny made the audience a party to this oppression. As if to say, "Yeah, but you're standing here in an opera house that looks like a palace watching this, so how different are you?" This raises the stakes and gives the opera an immediacy that conventionally pictorial direction doesn't, however pretty the costumes may be.
This is a superb performance. Have seen it few times live in Vienna. If you don't get it, you just don't understand Don Carlos nowadays... Stage & public were mixed, you could either stay on your seat, or you could walk arround in the opera house and watch this part of opera on big screen. They showed us that we are part of the auto da fe thing, and we still do it today!!! Shame on us!
I get it!! An extraordinary performance of this magnificent opera, brought up-to-date and relevant. Great orchestra, conductors, some excellent singers (not all) and thrilling chorus. And totally complete in the original Paris version that Verdi was reluctantly obliged to cut before the premiere to accommodate the Paris metro schedule!!

The opera is not historically accurate anyway - so who knows how the public reacted to burnings at the stake. For that matter, look back when we had public hangings - there were parties too.
It was supposed to be a mass and taking of communion. Professing their devotion to God.. I've been lucky enough to be an heritic nun in the Sydney version. Burnt at the stake 3 times 9 performance...It's a sacred scene not a cocktail party..
My favorite eurotrash ! ( not that we don’t see operatic trash in the new world like for ex the Met’s Rigoletto in Vegas or Cosi in Coney Island to mention just two. Somehow I like this DC version better than other “ updates “ A simple matter of subjective opinion.
In the original version of the opera (set in 16th Century Spain), the setting is the burning of heretics by the Inquisition. Here, the production has updated it, but you still get the condemned being paraded through the party. If you want to see a more historically faithful production, the one from ROH/Met is quite good (ruclips.net/video/-Ciez8ldky4/видео.html though there's a cut in the middle of the video).
I am normally against modernist stagings but I actually prefer this cocktail party to the Hytner version of this scene which features the heretics wearing cone hats and flames painted on their robes. It's creative, though nearly the whole production taking place in a blue box bothers me.

Auto-da-fe' is a public penance ritual used most infamously during the Spanish Inquisition which resulted in people designated by the Church as being heretics to be burnt at the stake. The Metropolitan Opera had a great staging several years ago. But this one from Vienna is horrible, and shows how ignorant the director was of the significance of this scene in the opera!!! Had I been in the audience at that performance, I would have walked out.

Well, it's certainly an attempt to be clever. Still, the voices are amazing (as always with the Staatsoper)-- and evidently something was taken away from this, because the recent production mounted at the Staatsoper (with the same tenor) was more traditional. Still, excellent cast, good acting too (on the part of the characters, not so much the reporter), so that's something. If only they'd kept the 'voice from Heaven' actually coming from Heaven......that ruins the end of the act.
I hate to be the one to break the bad news, but Verdi is already dead. He died in 1901. If you meant this more metaphorically, then I'm afraid you'll have to explain how continuing to present Verdi's operas is "killing Verdi".

@@veraahllof sí, yo utilizo mi imaginación cuando escuchando la música (y conociendo el libreto) puedo imaginar la escena del auto de fe a la perfección, con cada grupo de personajes apareciendo en escena al ritmo que marca una música que refleja su esencia o condición: desde el pueblo alborotado, la aristocracia y cortesanos con sofisticada indiferencia, los fanáticos religiosos, los conmovedores ajusticiados dignos de compasión, etc. Porque, los compositores románticos como Verdi o Wagner componían su música para que transmitiera de frma instintiva lo que la escena narra. Algo que, en esta puesta en escena está en contraposición. Solo hace falta un poco de sentido musical, de la que la mayoría de los directores de escena actuales demuestran carecer, para que repugne a la imaginación. Claro que, en estos tiempos en los que nos han acostumbrado a tragar una realidad politico-social distorsionada, no es de extrañar que nos quieran vender la narración de un acontecimiento histórico como un ejercicio de imaginación. Aunque, dicho sea de paso, la leyenda negra en la que se basa la obra de Schiller no es mas que otra mentira histórica sobre la que Verdi compuso una ópera de gran belleza (y que esta puesta en escena arruina).

It was always presented in modern dress until James Robinson Planché's design for the Charles Kemble production of _King John_ created a fashion for "historically informed Shakespeare". So all these directors who make free with the time period are actually doing Shakespeare with more fidelity than the boring old costume dramas.

The director should have been one of the victims at the Auto-da-fe. Scheisse von der Wiener Staatsoper. The music is first class.
