Stinks that I could only give this video one thumbs up! All your points are spot on for someone starting out. I'm 43 and have made all the mistakes you mentioned and then some. I know that my small farm would be much further ahead today if I had done the things that you mention. I too bought a new tractor which I really like, but fear eventually it will also suffer from O.S.S. 😂 Another thing I see a lot of young men especially sucked into is buying brand new pickup trucks that will bleed them dry financially and when they finally pay them off, most of them will be junk by then. Lenders keep extending the payment term length out which gains them ridiculous amounts of interest while enticing the buyer with lower monthly payments. All this really does is make it harder to get anywhere while paying on that loan. Thanks for the video, you picked up a new subscriber.
Sir, you are 100% correct! When I was doing ag planning, I had a lot of owners saying the "tax dodge". Pretty hard to have them do practices that they aren't invested in. Regarding the equipment. The ONLY thing I would possibly buying new is one of those small round balers. But I believe is that a person can get a rectangular baler, offset swather, and a bale loader for the same price. And nearly every operator that I assisted with operation costs never account for depreciation. Was the same for petroleum, oil, lubrication expenses as well. Those things are a part of doing business and can be covered as a tax write-off. Verygood comments on tractors. One of the other items is just what you are talking about at the end. I am personally looking into a small acreage farm and before I go all in, I need to do market research. This can be done by just going down to the weekend farmers market. One thing I was significantly looking into was blueberries. A friend of mine grows and sells them and produces blueberries. I wanted to know about his operation. At the end of our conversation, he said was my area greatly needs raspberries and black berries. I thought that was brilliant. So, you have to figure out your market, just like you said, before you even put one seed or sapling into the gound. Excellent video! Glad I subscribed! 😊😊😊
Well I’m glad we agree 👍 I’m in the process of getting my farm started and it’s a slow process as I’m avoiding debt and trying multiple livestock types to see what will be profitable, enjoyable etc. I’m also giving RUclips a shot lol Good luck 🍀 on your farm journey!
That's the point. Agree. I'm planning to buy a small land/farm (20 to 30 acres) before retire to start an enterprise with just a few chickens, sheeps, pigs and low-line Angus (just a few). In order to do that, I tought to get a bank loan, but I'm positive now to sell a house in Galveston (TX) and have to continue working remote at least 3 years or more and avoid debt while the new land is going to be consolidate and I learn about of this new and amazing farm's world. I don't want to die without trying. Thanks for the video and your suggestions.
Well, i must say you are on point. I have been 1 1/2 year into my new farm, and i have fallen on most of your points. We just started again after learning from past mistakes. It's hard, but it's rewarding to know we are gaining the experience need to reach our goals. This is a good video! I just subscribed.😊
@USAFarmers thank you! The learning never stops, for me, because I seem to have a way of finding new ways to make mistakes 🤣. However, as you say, it's definitely worth it. Good luck!
Seen a few videos and subscribed. Im also a tall skinny with epic analytical skills and a childhood love of this way of life. Did it once before and failed due to city job obligations. Now, its a fallback but if one puts their effort in, its not something that will have to come up. Thanks for taking the lead. See you around and hope to share our journey's. 🍻
Great advice as usual. Seen a lot of videos on this topic and the ones you mentioned just aren’t talked about, so good to hear a new view. Hope your wife has a wonderful Mother’s Day
I have a small farm and small youtube channel as well. I was wondering if you'd like to do some type of collaborative video? Maybe like you show how something is done there, and I do the same here. What area are you? I'm in cullman al

Thank you! I used to have a problem with trading trucks almost every year. It will turn you upside down in a hurry.
Ditto!😊😊😊
Love that old Farmall! I've got an early 70's Ford 4000 and an old 8N, both great tractors.
Thank you! I love it, too. My dad was a Ford tractor guy. I grew up on a 5000. He also had a 3000. Those were good old tractors.

“Big” farmers would benefit from your video. It is amazing to watch the amount of money lost to interest

Thank you very much! I hope your family has had a happy Mother's Day as well.
Good stuff. I agree with you wholeheartedly on the money segment, not borrowing money And not buying things you dont need.
Thank you!
I love the message on your top. Good to know you're a Jesus guy. Bless you brother .
Thank you!
Smart video
Maybe a co-op between farmers is the answer, sharing equipment.
That might work!

I'm open to the idea. Send me an email when you get a chance (planeviewfarmer@gmail.com) with some more specific thoughts about what you'd like to do.

Some wise words, debt can bury you.
