As the person that was actually responsible for the restoration of the Vaile Mansion from 1984 to 1995, or pretty much as you see it today inside and out, allot of this is true, some of it is hog wash. I also oversaw the restoration of the Bingham Waggoner Estate in Independence, MO as well, and saved many other historical structures in town, administered the Harry S. Truman historic district and worked with our city manager hand in hand to bring the National Frontier Trail Center into a reality. The Vaile Mansion was a nursing home and asylum. It was also basically destroyed when the city bought it for restoration. Yes, I know the room where lobotomies took place. And, being on call 24-7-365 I have been in the mansion alone at all hours of the day and night. I have been in the basement so many times I can't tell you and there were no cages or proof of cages. I actually had the carpenter that was helping in the restoration working out of the basement the last several years. The basement was originally used as storage for fruit from the orchard, coal (the mansion has 9 fire places, all coal burning) and other essentials used by staff and the family. I won't bother you with the extensive process of restoring the mansion other than to say it was a work of love. The third floor is actually used for storage. In addition, the "face" room is on the second floor directly above the front porch (we restored both the porch and the room configured to its original condition based on physical and photographic evidence. The porch was changed in 1928 and the original paint scheme applied). I have been in the mansion at the most precarious of times. I actually stayed in the mansion on some Halloween nights to protect if from vandalism. Because the mansion is completely constructed of genuine northern white pine (which is not available anymore due to the forests being wiped out), with the exception of the kitchen floor which is southern yellow pine and the main staircase which is walnut, the house creaks and groans greatly in the spring and fall months. Enough to spook about anyone I would imagine, but I was used to it. I never saw an aspiration, heard voices or any of that nonsense. Its a creaky old house that is almost 60 feet tall built in pine and on top of a stone foundation. It has a character of its own. LOL. The property was originally much bigger with a lake, lake house, vineyard and wind cellar, and a coy pond. Not to mention wild peacocks running freely about the grounds. The Vaile Society takes care of the mansion now and the city still owns it. You can tour it normally from April to October and during Christmas. Its a lovely treat for those that appreciate older architecture presented in its original form. But, don't be scared. There are no ghosts. Or are there?

Frank, thanks for taking the time to add some first-person details on this house.

    • @frankdavis7694

You are most welcome. Your video was well done and I meant no offense. We used to have around 100 volunteers that showed the mansion and when I had time I would join a group or listen and the stories they told and even with some very specific handbooks for them the stories were invariably different. Chuckle. Its okay. They loved the house and the experience and we had a terrific volunteer coordinator Evelyn Ellis. And of course the volunteers themselves were terrific. Our city manager, Bill Bullard, was really responsible for obtaining all of the city's historic buildings and I had the time of my life restoring them. He was kind enough to give me a free hand in doing so. I'm very proud of the work that we did and also the members of the society that raised money to help buy furniture and period pieces to decorate the place. We were also very fortunate to have a fifth generation craftsman painter, Walt Monroe, to restore the woodwork and the busty fresco in the parlor. and a master carpenter Martin Hunter to work on the outside. To all our dismay, both have passed on. Plus an architectural historian, David Arbogast, who helped me immensely with the microscopic paint analysis for both the inside and outside of the mansion. It wasn't about the money (thank God) it was about the love of keeping our history alive. Thanks for the nice comment.

Thank you for sharing this awesome video. I found it to be most interesting and wish there was more information available on Independence. The tour of this mansion is fantastic, but of course they don't dwell on the hidden secrets that lie within. I walked by this building to and from school for many years as I was growing up and it always fascinated me. It's hard for me to believe that someone hasn't written a book about its history, and only discovered your video today. There seems to be a lot amiss in Independence today for a town that has such a rich history.

Thanks for your comment. It's a very interesting place to visit, but they won't let you go down to the basement. All of the tour guides will deny a lot of the things that are mentioned in this video, especially the mental hospital days with the lobotomies and other "experiments."

My Dad & I went to Independence in 1985 to visit my brother who lived there. We visited the Vail mansion but it was closed due to construction. We were told to come back in a few weeks. We told the lady we were from Baltimore so she let us in to look around in some of the rooms. It was really beautiful but we only saw the main floor & a few rooms upstairs. We couldn’t go in them just looked from the hallway. It really did have an eerie feeling inside. I’ve always wanted to go back. The history intriguing.

Thank-you Magnum! The 3rd floor may contain prison like cells, pre chemical restraint, cold water and other 'treatments' were used. Basements are traditionally morgues. Late ''60s as a teenager I worked one summer at a mental hospital. The blue and disorientated faces of 'Shock Treatment' Tuesdays and Thursdays... the wing with locked and bared doors...

Independence is my hometown. My father is an RLDS elder and he was chaplain at the Cable Rest Home, which is what Vaile Mansion was operated as before its restoration. If I remember correctly, his chaplaincy lasted from approximately 1978 until the mansion changed hands to be restored in around 1981. I know for sure it was the early 1980s before the nursing home closed. I used to go there and sing for the residents at Christmas. The home was run during those years by a couple named David and Gladys Binger. I found David Binger's obituary here: www.speakschapel.com/book-of-memories/100720/binger-david-vernon/obituary.php
I am not sure what happened between 1960 and 1978, but I give you my word that the mansion was still a nursing home clear through the 1970s.

Well was I ever impressed with your account of this historic place, Magnum. A lot of people these days cannot understand the reasoning behind building such hugeness for just one family, regardless of friends/family visitors. It is important to show that centuries old respect and desire for acceptance at socially higher levels were die hard parts of the consciousnesses of those who could escape European aristocratic oppression during the new age of industry. The consciousness has lived on, almost like a part of the DNA, in the poor, middle and rich who could see success, despite examples of the gross demise and abandonment that awaited such huge structures, apparent from as early as 1880, as your work has shown. The latest example of Prince's death alone amidst his sprawling estate exemplifies this die hard mentality.

"Their lives were happy and golden"...ummm, except that they were snubbed by society because of a nude fresco....and her death (after less than a year of "sublime happiness in her new home) was considered to be due to an accidental overdose of the drug she had been using to combat her depression....eh ? Doesn't sound too happy to me !

Magnificent Mansion, but I bet the house is Haunted as all get out. Seems like it had a curse from the very beginning. Funny, when I watched the house tour video, I thought the faces in the tower room looked like trapped souls...spooky. If the Vaile society refute the ghost stories, that makes me feel like it must be definitely haunted. The cruel and inhumane treatment of the patients and the bad luck of every owner has to have left a very negative energy in this house. You can see it from the outside, even though the house is magnificent.
