PG’s Perry Bean met with boundary-pushing guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra of Deafheaven during their stop in Nashville. McCoy and Shiv showed their atypical guitars, workhorse pedalboards, and loud tube-driven amps.
Kerry McCoy tours with two Dunable guitars. His No. 1 is this Moonflower model featuring a walnut body and neck, wenge fretboard with flame maple binding, Dunable Grizzly pickups, Grover Sta-Tite tuners, and a dive-bombing Kahler bridge. This is a body shape/style that Intronaut guitarist/luthier Sacha Dunable normally doesn’t build, but he asked Sacha to build his version of Kerry’s rare blue Les Paul that he used to favor.
Shiv plays a Dunable Yeti with a mahogany neck and body, ebony fretboard, brushed aluminum pickguard and hardware, and Gibson Burstbucker pickups. Shiv strings it with D'Addario NYXL .011s, tuned to either standard tuning or dropped D.

"I literally just one day youtubed 'how to do kevin shields'" made me fucking lol
Pretty sure he is referring to this video /watch?v=HrXuvDRSwN8
The best Rig Rundowns are when the artists actually demonstrate the different sounds and explain in detail how they use their guitars and amps to get the sounds they want. This one does a pretty good job of that. Keep it up guys! I'm addicted to these rundowns; I've seen every one.
Agreed. The rig rundown with Andy Timmons is so good for this reason.
kerry looks like benjamin franklin
ask him about the time he flew a kite in the rain (yes he tied a key to the string)
LMAO
boom roasted
Lmfao 😂
He looks better now lol
Dude its so refreshing to see big bands that still use amps.
the use quilter overdrive amps on tour now
Still use amps? As opposed to.. digital modelers?
@@MK-oz2lf What's the deal with those? At first I thought they were modelers, but I looked into them and can only find people complaining about switching channels completely changing your tone.

The more of these I watch, the more I realize how much some musicians don’t give a shit what gear they use. “Scale length? Who gives a F?” It’s more about music than gear
Ironically, scale length is something that actually affects how some people can play. It's not really a gear-thing.
Kerry literally looks like long haired Dwight from The Office.
He just looks like some chill stoner you’d meet at a diy show
"Were you like 'hey' or was he like 'hey'?"
I'm still waiting to find out who said hey.
Premier Guitar out here asking the REAL questions
Shiv's search for a drink begins at 14:18
radioheadliner its great that the band has hired an immigrant. I'm encouraged to see such diversity in America now! Shiv speaks very good English also.
Hero Zero Maybe it's because he's a good guitar player, who cares if he's an immigrant.
2mics?
Agreed. Brown folks are great helpers and we should hire more of them.
lmao
Red House Painters reference, I got it Perry. Never heard anyone use them as a reference before.
Do a rig rundown with Touche Amore

I have a photo of both pedalboards from winter 2017 if you want!
@@YHg7PRQu man, i want some, please share :D
just realized that Kerry looks like Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Benjamin Franklin was the better comment lol
I love how Perry asked if the neck was longer than Gibson scale and he's like "yeah it's got these really big frets" 😂 , thats a guy who's avoided the gear bug that we all get and he just stuck to getting good tones and writing cool riffs. I love it!
Depending on your build the fret size/scale won't bother you, but for smaller dudes like myself it's noticeable when you're playing standing up. I've been a long-time Telecaster player, and my fiance has a LesPaul. I was shocked by how much more comfortable her guitar is to play standing up.
Then I found out about Jimmy Page and how he recorded so many songs with a Tele, and yet play a LP on tour.
@@drownthepoor Dude I agree 100%! As a short man myself, I've always played Strats and super strats...but the first time I played an SG I was infatuated at how 'comfy' it was...at first I thought it was the shape but I've come to realize over time that the shorter scale length in general just feels so much better for me. I recently picked up a Dean ML and had the same thing happen. Originally I thought 'wow never thought an ML would be so easy to play' and sure enough I looked it up and it's a 24.75 scale
@@radfury23g32 Yeah I was laying my Tele on top of the LP. Measuring things and all, and it turns out it's the fret scales.
Neck/shape a circumference also might play a role, but it's mostly the scale.
I won't let it stop me from playing the Telecaster though lol.
However, in the future I might try to get one with a different scale neck.
From now on that's just what I look for when trying out guitars.
that mel 9 was damn good
Reminds me of an organ.
Peavy are notorious for being the nicest cats. I have never heard an artist speak ill of them.
Is it the same scale lenght? Yeah, it has jumbo frets.
Rumor has it that no one on earth knows what the scale length of those guitars are.
24.75
I'm heard 25.5 to keep tension in lower tunings
What lower tunings, they only use Standard and Drop D tuning.
I mean I've heard the builder does primarily those scale lengths. On the dunable web site the guitar specs say 25.5
25.5 is the same as a Strat. Gibson at 24.75 and PRS at 25...
You guys should do a rundown of Deb from Drab Majesty, his setup looks pretty huge.
Funny how little he knows about his gear. His tones are fantastic on their albums.
Agreed, but like he said, it's boutique (custom made) so there really isn't a way for him to say what the pickups are, other than saying they are better versions of humbuckers.
Love this one so much! These guys are so unpretentious and down to earth about their gear to create such a huge sound.
wow that was Kevin Shields
lmao
Kerry Shields. v:
Someone pls tell Kerry the Hazarai lets you save presets if you press and hold the white knob.
I'd love to see a channel doing such rig rundowns, but for drummers.
please do one for the band DIIV! (after quarantine is over)
YAAAAAAAAAAAAS
I wonder if you saw them open for Deafheaven last year?
Yes please! Last gig I went to before lockdown was DIIV in Brighton back in Feb. Christ that seems ages ago now - we’ll get those days back soon people!
What we've been waiting for... thanks Premier Guitar!!!!
marco abreo :(
shut up bitch!
13:22 i love that i know exactly what video he's talking about lol. seems like such a cool and down to earth guy
Dunable guitars are amazing. I bought one earlier this year from Sacha off reverb. It was from his "personal collection", so it had a few extra features. It's a yeti in natural finish, mastery bridge and trem, split coil direwolfs, graph tech nut, luminal(?) inlay, all mahogany, set up for C#. It's beautiful and sounds amazing. It really provides best of both worlds in that it has a 25.5 inch with a super flat radius (I want to say it's 19" radius?) and eboney fretboard. Amazing guitar. The neck feels amazing. The pickups are wide and open with a lower mid hump sound, and super high output--almost too high output (I like the pickups and the tonal variety they provide, but I do find them almost too hot. I would rather lower output pickups for all the fuzz boxes I play, however, I like being able to just turn the volume knob down a bit if I need to). I love this guitar and am really stokeD I bought it. I had been planing on a buyin a higher end instrument for a while and this guitar has really molded my playing. I had to shape my style to better fit this guitar and essentially have greater control over my picking and attack. Dunables are AMAZING guitars.
Essentially is Kerry’s favorite word. He says it in every interview 7000 times over. Half the time, the word doesn’t even fit as an adjective
once again... loved the bass gear too :)
let me guess.. a musicman and a SVT?
Looks like a dunable yeti bass with P pup and an ashdown amp/ 8x10 cab in the Audiotree far out session.
@@Braulios_Penesecou best I can tell*
Could we get an O'brother rig rundown? They're on tour with Biffy Clyro right now.. they got TONES
Kerry looks like Drew Carey's metalhead son
The tall foo was interrupting the lil foo so much that at the end he was a couple minutes to talk 🤣🤣
I like how they gave Kerry a mic and not shiv. That’s nice of the host
oh hey i have the same two delay pedals. they're a fantastic combination. re-20 is very warm and best suits slower parts, memory man can be crystal clear and works well for delays of any length/intensity, plus the reverse is cool.
Essentially I don't have a better word.
Kept waiting for the interviewer to back into that flimsy double guitar stand and tip it over.
All I want for Christmas is Kerry’s tone.
The interviewer's Tragedy shirt tho
"I'm not a big tone snob or anything" you're definitely not wrong about that, Kerry.
wow, i forgot he was even using a 6505 when he had that clean channel on.

Only 2 mics, huh?
looks like its bulking season for kerry
Gotta confuse the body right babe. 2 SCOOPS, SWOOP AHH, SWOOP AHH.
i was guessing you'd be here, are you gonna make a video on this?
Seeing a Rich Piana reference in this is hilarious
He’s a real deal, a real deal don’t care about what they use, if it works it’s fine. Cool dude. I wanna a Mel9.
Please tell me you guys covered This will destroy you's gear as well. You can hear em in the background
DanegerESCplan They suck
Cool rig rundown!
thats cool that they use a mel9!!
Yeah man hella brutal I'm gonna be on MTV True Life one day
I'm pretty sure we saw the same video haha
i bought that memory man and a dano pedal off recommendation of that video
'I've got big chunky fingers' *nods*
14:38
shit i better get a memory man
How did he get the clean channel so clean... my 6505+ just couldn't get anywhere clean, had to sell it.
"I have no idea what Hazarai is" I'm pretty sure noone really knows.
Todesnuss it means, all the bells and whistles.
Do a rig rundown with benjamin franklin
how is he getting such good cleans out of a 6505? i heard that the cleans on them are usually pretty dull and flat.
I was wondering the same thing, but it could be his passive pickups. I think he mentioned that they were modelled after a Les Paul, which usually has lots of brightness to it. My
EMGs did lifeless on my old 5150 with the clean channel.
I've been waiting for thisssss
bless y'all
kinda interesting because the videos on how to Kevin Shields with the Hazarai all say to use the 1 sec setting, but I'm almost positive he uses the 1 sec+reverse setting here. i gotta mess around some more with my blue memory man! has anyone gotten the reverse reverb down really well that would like to share their favorite setting with me?! thanks.
Coincidentally the third non-consecutive 2017 Rig Rundown vid I've watched, wherein the guitarist busts a cover riff to demo toanz...
does he run all of it straight into the front of the amp or does he use the fx loop? sounds like he doesnt, though
Great video, but why is it unlisted?
when they're posted they're always initially unlisted but they become listed after a week or something
We put the videos on our website a week early before releasing them on RUclips to cannibalize the initial clicks. We put them live on our site every Wednesday, and the following Tuesday (today) we put them live on RUclips. If you're missing episodes, sign up for our newsletter! www.premierguitar.com/signup

best part of vid is shiv getting that drink
15:28 song?
Do Justin Beck from glassjaw next pleaseeeee!!!!😭😭😭💯💯💯🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Are they still extant?
Plz do an updated John Mayer Rig Rundown. He's currently on tour right now.
There is an overlap between Deafheaven and John Mayer fans?
I guess I would watch a rundown with that guy. He has those fancy PRSs. I think.
seeing deafheaven use earthquaker,my favorite pedal company is so satisfying
someone's a fan of EHX
Like. Like. Like.
Michael Horn Californians right?
trying to find, in the vid, if they mention tuning, drop D? (440) half-step down? anyone knows?
This might be a crazy question (and maybe I missed the answer in the video) but does anyone know who they were on tour with? Sounds like a post rock band in the background.

@@premierguitar thanks! that's awesome.
@@premierguitar nice! Thanks for answering.
lmao 22:13 nice "sanitarium" u got thar
Whats the song at the beginning

What distortion does Kerry use? not seen on the chain
Kerry threw a shot at my face and Shiv kicked us out of the parking lot at around 1 in Echo LA. DOPE SHOW
Looking to get a 6505 combo amp myself. They sound great. What would the gearheads of RUclips say is a fair price for one?
Faintest Of Breath look on the guitar center website. I wouldn't pay over $400 for how cheap they go used on there.
anyone know the riff at 14:41 ?
It is a solo in their song Sunbather
I don’t think deaf heaven plays without effects?
As if the Metallica shirt wasn't enough, Kerry busts out that riff at 22:12
Mike Fink what riff is that
The pre-chorus from Master of Puppets
OH MY GOD YES!!!!111
That guy is staning too close to his guitars. I would be like, can you switch places with me please
Mr.Boombastic !!!!
Are they going into the effects loop?
Morley Cry Baby... oh, Kerry.
and we - with whole hearts, yet broken words - we dream of wisdom
How can one possibly make a 5150/6505 any brighter. It’s such a tinty thin sounding amp, worse gain of any big gain head. I never understood why people get those when you could get like a MIG100, music man130 w/a big muff, boogie DC5, JCM900, Orange TH30, shit even early 70’s fender bandmaster heads with upgraded preamp and throw in some mercury mag transformers. Their are a million options for great heads spending 4-6 hundred that have way more tone than a 5150. Shit even the Peavy Ultra or a Peavy Valve King totally rip dicks and are crazy affordable.
Peavey VTM > 6505 and 5150 you'll never change my mind!!
The Butcher is the shit too
Yayy
Man, the guy doing the interview makes this hard to watch/ listen to.
Nobody's gonna mention that they took like 24 minutes to talk about one dude's rig and 4 minutes for the other dude. Why am I the only person to notice how wrong this is?
Esteban Aguayo they use the same amps and guitar brand... what more were you hoping to see from the second guy after u saw his pedals?
Ohh this 13:58 ...
13:40 is the trick
Kerry doesn't like to let Shiv talk, eh?
I bet he told the interviewer to only set up two mics. It's very noticeable how he doesn't let him talk much.
Stuart Lillard haha. I thought he was the roadie for a minute.
does anybody know what pickups are in the moonflower?
if it was suppose to be like a les paul as he said, then probably it's Dunable's take on those gibson pickups or PAFs (Grizzly?).
When I saw them live last November, they were using Gibson s
25:00
What is the music of the beginning of the video?
I think it's "brought to the water", could be wrong, but it's definitely off of New Bermuda
The original 5150 and the 6505 are the same amp, how does the interviewer not know that?
It's not though. It looks different and has a different number on it.
he's young...not an excuse though...
JONATHON SEAGULL he's a bass player .. what do you expect B-)
It's Perry.
the original 5150 has a more scoped sound. You can hear it yourself on Fluff's RUclips channel
