That’s the best reason IMO. A lot of times running boards are a pain in the ass but I feel better knowing if someone opens their door too far it’ll hit that instead
The Go rhino rb 20 slim have a metal trim rail at the top that make it hug the truck. They are pretty slim if you don't want a bulky step. They also have an optional step that you can add to the rail for each door. I have a 2022 double cab sr5 and noticed immediately that the seat would wear as well as the plastic edge that pops each time i slide out (I'm only 5'6") i do like the look of the running boards though so i got the original go rhino rb20 that's a little wider. It comes in 2 finish options. A regular textured metal and a bed liner coating that makes it more expensive. I like holes that allow fo dirt to fall to the ground. They are super easy to install. (You can do it by yourself pretty easily and quick)
I would use the power amp research steps. It gives you a great look when it hides under the truck. I like the look without the steps, so the power steps would be good.
Good option if your looking for the look he is going for. Sadly for me this is not an option, I live in the SW and take mine off road a good bit, past experience with powered steps in this climate is a no go if you go off road like I do, the sand and dust ruins em.
Agreed the step is a must. I've had mine for a few months now and cant imagine it without it. I also see all the post about the plastic breaking but I have manual seats and seems to be mostly happening to owners with electric seats. I have the Rhino RB20 and love them, they also help my 4 year old daughter be able to actually get in the back seat.
Out of the 3 options you mentioned, I would personally go with option #3. Sure they are the most expensive but I think they look the best. I also like how “TRD” is stamped into it and I like the non-skid linex type material. It’s the most expensive, but it is a real quality part as I have installed a few at my dealer. If you are really worried about the look of the truck, the retractable amp research steps would be great! Doesn’t ruin the look of the truck and you get a step so win win. Only downfall is they aren’t cheap…
Hey Mark. I bought my platinum last March and it came with the retracting factory step. I too love the no sidestep look and it totally takes care of that. I also worried about the seat so I always use the step to get in and out even though I’m 6’3”
I put predator steps on my 2023 trd pro, it was a must for me as my wife had difficulty getting in. I do agree the truck looks better without steps, but until there's an option for automatic running boards my predator steps work great and I find it easier to swing my leg around the individual step vs full running boards
Option 2: Predator steps are made from aluminum so you don’t have to worry about rust AND they are cheaper. Looks great on my 22 Tundra SR5 TRD Off Road Premium black interior / exterior. Also steps don’t accumulate snow like running boards will; I’m from CNY so snow / rust ARE very much a factor lol
Yea but you have to worry about corrosion which rust is but rust is on iron and if you want aluminum to last you have to polish it and it isn’t as strong as iron
I’ve had the amp steps for about 4 years on my 1741 and I love them. They fold down lower than a regular step and completely disappear when you shut the door. They are worth the money.
Got the basic $500 factory side steps. Took me an hour by myself. They look awesome. As for the plastic bolster for the seat where the seat controls are, clips broke twice, dealer replaced the whole plastic piece with controls twice. I have an extended warranty, so see this as a one every 18 month hassle until they improve the design. Dealer says it's common.
I have a 2020 Platinum with Amps and love them! They are the cleanest look, the perfect height and they also come with lights so when you open the door at night your step is illuminated. The wife loves them as well. 100% worth the cost!
On my 5th Ford. This one has factory power running boards and I love them. I’ll be replacing it with a 1794 with the off-road package. Can’t get the power boards with the off-road package. Amp says they will have them out in ‘23 and I’ll definitely be getting them. The power boards still give the look of none which is great and split the difference between the ground and the truck way better than regular bolt-on boards. Great for my 5’1” wife.
I have the last ones previewed and really do like them. They are very indiscreet and almost unnoticeable. They tuck up tightly to the body of the truck so foot placement requires a little attention but very solid and actually attractive on my TRD-Pro, Lunar Pearl with lift and 35's. The lift and 35's likely keep the step from making the truck look heavy or squatty. Don't think I would like them as much with the stock 32's. Everyone.........35" is the way to go!!!
I'm not a fan of side steps at all because I do not want to lose the clearance. Have you thought about rock sliders? They're more functional and won't easily break when you're offroad or in a snow storm and hit something you can't see.
Get option 3. I have them on my 2022 Limited and I highly recommend them. I don't understand predator steps. They hang low and sounds dumb but you got to aim your step to make sure your foot gets in there. They clump mud on them and just aren't as functional as a flat stepping platform. I live in Montana and the sides let the snow and ice melt into the slots cut in between. The only complaint I have is rocks get caught in those slots so you have to spray them out when cleaning or pry them out with a tool. They do tuck up higher then the predator steps and easier for my wife to get in and out of the truck.
I own a 2023 Tundra and went with the Go Rhino RB20 steps. I like that they taper on the ends giving a good look to the truck. Seems to be a popular choice in the comments.
I love the electronic ones on my platinum. Like you I love the look without seeing them. And have any step to help get in without rubbing that seat is a plus. But being I’m 5’3” I needed something and I’m glad I got the electronic ones. And anyone that gets on my truck thanks me for it.
I hav the go rhino rb20 on my 21. Love em. Would also love the Amps but i feel like these go rhinos protect from door dings and debris so ill stick with em for now.
Option 3. I’ve had my Pro for about 2 weeks and I definitely feel the same way about the higher seat lip. I feel like a child sliding out out my truck. Good thing is that my truck came with them (option 3). Bad thing is that they weren’t on the truck when I bought, so the dealer is trying to figure out how to replace them. They seem to have been lost in transit.
I bought a barely used 2021 tundra with the n fab steps and liked the look but was ver disappointed with using them mostly with new passengers They just don’t have enough stepping area and felt very flemsy I purchased the go rhino steps which have four mounts instead of three and give a huge area to step They also look like they will prevent door dings from careless people I am very happy with go rhino and have no regrets I also would like to comment on sparks parts who you heavily promote I like their prices but when a part came damaged it was very frustrating getting it replaced In the end I was so pissed I just sent the damaged/used part back to them Hope I get my money back but the process was brutal I have purchased many products from them but with no phone availability it was very frustrating to say the least Love your content Keep doing what you do
My 2011 came with the full length step like #3. I wasn't sure at first, but I've come to appreciate the extra space I have available to choose my step placement.
Nice rock the barn hat, LGI!! Just bought a 2023 tundra sr5 Trd sport, first truck I’ve ever owned and I’m loving it. Your videos have also been super helpful since I started researching and eventually purchased the truck! 👍🏼
Nic Vid. I'm waiting for AMP to come out with the power steps. After installing the factory TRD lift on my '22 Limited, it's now 5 inches taller than stock at the driver and passenger seat. Now I'm worried not just about the seat, but how my wife and other passengers will be able to get in comfortably. I've contacted AMP and they don't have anything yet, but they are working on it.
Mark, Like you said lots of options out there . The predator step design makes the step hang lower so for me I didn’t want to snag on anything while on the trails. I like the low profile tucked in look. So I went with the Toyota version I think it was option 2. It kinda looks like rock sliders side view. Plus it’s OEM and it took 10 minutes to install with the help of a friend. Should also note that the hardware is already on your Tundra. So if you buy Toyota side steps you just unscrew the bolts under your truck. Hope that helps.
The stock Toyota side steps really add to the look.... For someone who is 6.5 I really don't need a sidestep the get in or out of the truck. If I step on the step I'm way too high to get into the truck....so for me the step is just bling! But you are correct the bolster on the driver seat is starting to wear!
I went with the black TRD boards on my truck. They are aluminum and will likely last the longest in the rust belt region. They have a very aggressive grip and attract debris occasionally. I will warn you, do not miss the step getting out. I did that a couple of times over the 1st couple of weeks with shorts and sandals. Your calf takes a beating. Pretty much draws blood. You will quickly learn.
So... I have a 2023 Army Green 1794 that came with the retractable side steps. Prior to my purchase I would have been neutral on the steps. After having the retractable ones I would recommend going that direction. They maintain the no step look while having the benefit of the step. Also, being retractable they may come down further than a fixed step because clearance is no longer an issue and of course better clearance than even a high fixed version. Thanks for all your videos as I have watched a bunch prior to and after the purchase of my tundra.
When I got my 22 platinum with automatic running boards I thought that it was a waste and didn’t need them. I really didn’t but I fell in love with them, made it so easy to get in and out. It’s pricey but I’d spend the money and get the Amp boards. I checked into it when I thought I was going to get a pro and yes you will need something with the pro. I found a video of a 22 pro with them at a dealership in North Carolina. But I have decided to get a solar octane Tacoma. The tundra was just more truck than I wanted. Good luck!
I like the rock slider style(C4 Fab or the Cali raised) that hugs the body a lil more then the predator and the runningboards remind me of an old man struck.
Amp Research is about to release there's by year end and once i had Amps on my last gen I always told myself I will NEVER have any other step for the rest of my life! They are so awesome you would Love them!..... if you go with any other I vote the ones with free $200 mats!
I put the N-Fab Nerf Step RS on mine, they have a nice wide step. I don't care for the look of the ones from the dealer. If i decide to keep it I may upgrade to the Amp Research PowerStep XL, I have these on my Tacoma and love them, they are built tough!!
I have a 24' Tundra Limited w/TRD pkg. on its way to dealer in few weeks . Has no running boards or bed step so I've been looking them up. Did see some running boards made by Toyota (aluminum w/ black powder) on Tundras on the lot. I believe they are PT925-34222 MSRP $620 on sale for $542.80 , they have the Toyota emblem on them . Also found out bed step can be manual or electronic .
Go Rhino Rb 10 with Bedliner finish. They tuck in tight, they don’t stick out too far and they are not tapered like the RB 20. They look really good on my 22
I have the TRD running boards that came with the truck. They work great but like you, I’m just not a fan of the look with running boards. Ill eventually want to switch to electrical steps like the AMP research ones or find a way to install the OEM ones since it tucks away to give it that clean look again. It’s just so expensive that I’ll wait on it for a bit.
You could put a lowering kit on it or squat the front end??............ nah probably not. If the money was there the powered running board would be the way to go I think. It kinda gives the best of both worlds. I personally like the running boards over the steps myself as long as they are on the sleeker side and not the thicker ones. Good luck, be safe and be blessed!
Predator steps are so dumb looking. That was the first thing I took off my TRD Pro. I put on Go Rhino running boards. Better ground clearance and are much more functional.
I like the electronic running board ,then I want to kick it so it slides back to the bed like the Denali, plus I want daul exhaust ,and that grab bar to pull me up on the bed,and finally rubber step in daul like the denali .Now that would be nice.
I installed the HD2 from ROUGH COUNTRY, after my seat side with the controls broke, on my 22 limited. I didn't want to but didn't want that panel to brake again, not bad price at $350
I’m right there with ya. I think the truck looks better without them, but I was tired of hopping into the truck. I went with the Go Rino RB20 side steps
I understand the TRD Pro leaves off the steps for clearance purposes, but at the price point of these trucks, they should come standard with retractable side steps.
The last gen Tundra offered something called a "w-drop step" side rail in the XSP trim. I don't live in the coastal areas where they offered that trim and the local dealer was not allowed to order them, so I had to order them from a dealer down there and have them shipped to my home. I don't know if they make them for the new gen, but they are a sort of lower profile step. They look great on my 2020 and the angles flow with the shape of the truck since they were specifically made/designed for the Tundra. You might google them and see if you like that design. I'm 99% sure they are made by Westin for Toyota since they have some that are similar looking.
Do you know if anyone makes wheel to wheel running boards or sliders for 2023 Tundra crewmax long bed? Everything I have seen is cab length, but I’m hoping for an extra step to get up into the front of the bed.
spend a little more and go for power steps if you dont like the look of running boards, if not, then go for the trd predator, try to find it used, i have sold mine for about 250 a year ago lol
I put running boards on both my tacoma and tundra to keep the stupid people from dinging my doors in the small parking spots.
Jealous people in low cars try to ding trucks on purpose.
I have the black TRD running boards on mine and love them. They don’t stick out a lot but definitely make getting in and out easier.
Do they stick out enough to prevent other car doors from hitting the body?
Buy once cry once. Be patient and get best of both worlds. Amp/powered
I have the black TRD step on my 22’ red platinum. Look great and fits the truck very well!
Black TRD Running boards. Sit higher, larger more consistent base to stand on
Out of the 3 options you mentioned, I would personally go with option #3. Sure they are the most expensive but I think they look the best. I also like how “TRD” is stamped into it and I like the non-skid linex type material. It’s the most expensive, but it is a real quality part as I have installed a few at my dealer. Have the platinum -with the auto retract steps & love them! That clean look is priceless. The comments at gas stations & parking lots are fun as well!
As others have suggested, take a look at the go rhino. They look sharp!
On my 5th Ford. This one has factory power running boards and I love them. I’ll be replacing it with a 1794 with the off-road package. Can’t get the power boards with the off-road package. Amp says they will have them out in ‘23 and I’ll definitely be getting them.

I'm not a fan of side steps at all because I do not want to lose the clearance. Have you thought about rock sliders? They're more functional and won't easily break when you're offroad or in a snow storm and hit something you can't see.
Yup slimline rock sliders is way to go ... even if you're not planning to offroad. Because, you never know when you will.
Put the 3 step predators on my 2017 Crewmax. 6 years later and they’re the same as the day I drove off the lot. Looks tough works great.
C4 Rock Sliders have arrived and need to be cleaned, primed and painted before install on my 22 Tundra TRD Pro.
OEM TRD cast aluminum $900+ but was part of the top off road package on my 22’ SR5. I knew I had to have them and luv them.
Get option 3. I have them on my 2022 Limited and I highly recommend them. I don't understand predator steps. They hang low and sounds dumb but you got to aim your step to make sure your foot gets in there. They clump mud on them and just aren't as functional as a flat stepping platform. I love the Amp steps because they tuck and give me the look of no side steps. Much like you, I prefer the no step look.
1794 here with automatic steps. Perfect!!
I love the electronic ones on my platinum. Like you I love the look without seeing them. And have any step to help get in without rubbing that seat is a plus. But being I’m 5’3” I needed something and I’m glad I got the electronic ones. And anyone that gets on my truck thanks me for it.
OEM power steps all the way! They are perfect. Unless you’re really going heavy and frequent over landing.
I hav the go rhino rb20 on my 21. Love em. Would also love the Amps but i feel like these go rhinos protect from door dings and debris so ill stick with em for now.
Power steps - the ones that came w/capstone are nice 😎
My wife’s 5’3”” and I got the running boards. Did by myself took about 30 minutes!
I bought a barely used 2021 tundra with the n fab steps and liked the look but was ver disappointed with using them mostly with new passengers
They just don’t have enough stepping area and felt very flemsy
I purchased the go rhino steps which have four mounts instead of three and give a huge area to step
They also look like they will prevent door dings from careless people
I am very happy with go rhino and have no regrets
I also would like to comment on sparks parts who you heavily promote
I like their prices but when a part came damaged it was very frustrating getting it replaced
In the end I was so pissed I just sent the damaged/used part back to them
Hope I get my money back but the process was brutal
I have purchased many products from them but with no phone availability it was very frustrating to say the least
Love your content
Keep doing what you do
Option 3 for sure! I’ve purchased a ‘23 platinum a week ago and it’s awesome with the automatic step when needed.
Always happy to help a fellow member of Isles Nation 😁
Pair of Go Rhino RB20 along with a Westcott designs 2 in. lift.
Mark,
Like you said lots of options out there .
Go with the folding ones - you get the look of no side steps, but the functionality you need.
The wear of the seats is exactly what I'm worried about too. We've had our Tundra for a week now, just have to decide what to get.
I’m waiting for AMP research to make some articulating steps for the tundra. Best of both worlds
I’m a big fan of the AMP fold out electronic steps!
Automatic steps all the way 100%. They tuck away when not needed and are right there for you when you need them most! WIN WIN situation.
I have the set of side steps on my 22' Tundra but my truck had them installed already from the dealership & my last Tundra had'em too....
Love the TRD steps we put on our Limited.
Good luck!
2023 trd owner here, I like option 3
Stay away from the TRD ONE . I have it on my 1794 . Its so hard to clean even with a pressure washer. And it looks dirty all the time.
Get some sliders that can serve as steps to protect your cab offroad. DeMello etc.
I couldn’t be happier with my Toyota-installed predator steps on my ‘22. Functional, plus I really love the look.
Side steps are a must on trucks. I think ur truck will look great w/ those Go Rhino steps that’s similar to those on the Raptors
I like the rock slider style(C4 Fab or the Cali raised) that hugs the body a lil more then the predator and the runningboards remind me of an old man struck.
I have the factory power running boards on a Platinum and they’re great so far…keeps the clean look you were looking for
Most important mod on a 22-24 tundra is to get rid of the turbo’d mini engine and put a tried, tested, and true 5.7L naturally aspirated engine in!
Amp Research is about to release there's by year end and once i had Amps on my last gen I always told myself I will NEVER have any other step for the rest of my life! They are so awesome you would Love them!..... if you go with any other I vote the ones with free $200 mats!
Power steps...best of both.
I would go with Power Running Boards. They work great and tuck away for the look you like.
2nd option. Toyota Predator version. Minimalist, rugged, will blend best with your beautiful black truck.
Rough country ba2 running boards.. great price, easy install and look great!
AMP!!! All the others look terrible. Tucked away when not in use, lights up, great look.
I’d install those black TRD running boards
Go Rhino Rb 10 with Bedliner finish. They tuck in tight, they don’t stick out too far and they are not tapered like the RB 20. They look really good on my 22
Mark, the first thing I do is remove the side steps. How much will a replacement seat cover cost? Less than side steps?
I have the TRD running boards that came with the truck. They work great but like you, I’m just not a fan of the look with running boards. Ill eventually want to switch to electrical steps like the AMP research ones or find a way to install the OEM ones since it tucks away to give it that clean look again. It’s just so expensive that I’ll wait on it for a bit.
Im only 5' 7", so a must for me. Dont want to wear the seats out sliding across. Would get number 3, or if you could add retractable.
Just bought a 23 SR5 and within a week I bought some Westin stainless steps.
Electronic hidden steps look the best.
TRD PRO RUNNING BOARDS LOOK GOOD ON ANY 2022 TUNDRA TOO ME. THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS NORRIS.
Predator steps are so dumb looking. That was the first thing I took off my TRD Pro. I put on Go Rhino running boards. Better ground clearance and are much more functional.
I would see if you can get a hold of the factory retractable side step. Clean look and you know the product will fit with no issues.
I like the electronic running board ,then I want to kick it so it slides back to the bed like the Denali, plus I want daul exhaust ,and that grab bar to pull me up on the bed,and finally rubber step in daul like the denali .Now that would be nice.
TRD PRO trim should come with its own unique Step bar.
I like the 3rd option the best. Similar to the Raptor ones and I like that look, very low profile from the side.
The fold up against the truck the automatic ones then you could do a review on them and let let us know how they hold up with the snow and weather
Bought a black Platnum. Put the black TRD aluminium running board's. Nothing is finer.
Honestly, you change out trucks so much I don’t think you are going to need to worry about wearing those seats out.
I put a oem trd running boards and its a must for trd off road for the longetivity of the driver seat
A v8 swap would be a must modification to that thing
Option 3 I think is the best look
I understand the TRD Pro leaves off the steps for clearance purposes, but at the price point of these trucks, they should come standard with retractable side steps.
You have top-of-the-line go with electric ones
The last gen Tundra offered something called a "w-drop step" side rail in the XSP trim. I don't live in the coastal areas where they offered that trim and the local dealer was not allowed to order them, so I had to order them from a dealer down there and have them shipped to my home. I don't know if they make them for the new gen, but they are a sort of lower profile step. They look great on my 2020 and the angles flow with the shape of the truck since they were specifically made/designed for the Tundra. You might google them and see if you like that design. I'm 99% sure they are made by Westin for Toyota since they have some that are similar looking.
Thanks Eric!
Do you know if anyone makes wheel to wheel running boards or sliders for 2023 Tundra crewmax long bed? Everything I have seen is cab length, but I’m hoping for an extra step to get up into the front of the bed.
Wescott Design sliders. They are high but give you a great step.
Running boards is the way to go men !
spend a little more and go for power steps if you dont like the look of running boards, if not, then go for the trd predator, try to find it used, i have sold mine for about 250 a year ago lol
That plastic panel WILL break. It's a common replacement part for these new tundras. I broke mine already less than 5k miles
Hey Mark just install it on one side of your truck so you can save your drivers seat and you still got the look on the passenger side lol
