I had a symfony Tecnis multi focal lens put in both eyes after cataract surgery. I love them! I have very slight "star halo" effects in darkness say . . . looking at a street light but other than that at age 73 now I see both near and far like I did at 30!!!
Her testimonial convinced me that this is the best choice for me. I had the Symfony multi focal placed in my right eye two weeks ago. My distance and intermediate vision is 20/20 and awesome. Crystal clear and bright just like she says. My near is okay but could be better. Like your patient, I do not want to wear glasses! I am scheduled for the Multi focal 3.25 next week. I fully expect to achieve her results. Thank you for your informative videos. They have really educated me on my choices.
Thank you Dr. Wong, I’m having cataract surgery in a few weeks and all your video’s have put me to ease and I’m less nervous. You answered all my concerns and I’m confident I will have successfully outcome. I can’t wait to have clearer vision.
She has better vision now than I did at 30. Obviously my situation is different with glaucoma and severe myopia. Still, good to hear as I'll be getting a symfony lens soon to treat my cataracts.
i have been advised to have cataract surgery my dilemma is do i go private for the sum of £3300 or have the standard lens on the nat health for free any advice welcome thanks
Dr. Wong - I have the exact same lenses as to your patient in this video except on opposite eyes. After two months, my near vision (within arm-length) is perfect. However, my distance vision is struggling with vision quality i.e. fluctuation in vision sharpness, blurry, out-of-focus, glare in bright lights, low-light conditions or nighttime with halo/starburst from streetlights and vehicle headlights and taillights and lastly frequent eyes strain (probably from squinting to get better vision too much). I have more bad days than good days with distance vision. Frustrating! What do I need to do? Will this vision quality issues go away? Where do I go from here? Thanks again!
I had Tecnis lense implant in 2013, i noticed the same things she did... lense not bright, depth perception not good , can see close up but distance vision not great and massive halo issue...everything seems in soft focus. Never had my other eye done because I was sooo disappointed with multifocal tecnis.
Hi Dr. Wong, I need to decide in an hour. Confused as Technis is the name of Symfony now (2017). I know it's a personal choice, but would you be ok if you had both of your eyes implanted with this Symfony lens (let's say you were nearsighted in your left eye instead of farsighted) since the far-sighted is not a sharp as can be?
@@shoebahmed2379 I got the Symfony in my left eye and my close up vision is so very poor now I refused to go ahead with the second eye. My distance is acceptable but not as good as it was with glasses. I used to be able to read anything up close without glasses. Now I can't read anything except huge print with that eye and it drives me insane. I can no longer read my phone or books or labels in shops with that eye. I am currently wearing a distance correcting contact lens in my unoperated eye, for balance. This means that I have to walk about with reading glasses on top of my head the whole time, to pop on whenever I need to read something. I also see glare, starbursts, halo effect around lights, and I feel like I can't see so well in the dark any more. Dry eye is also now a problem for me and I have to use drops all the time. I'd say that unless you have cataracts or extreme presbyopia (like someone I know who is minus 15!) , don't bother. I sincerely regret it and wish I had tried multifocal contact lenses instead.
I got Symfony in left eye , I was so unhappy I declined surgery with same lens on right eye. I will be going with regular monofocal lens in right eye Feb. 25th. Hopefully it will balance things out if not DR. said we can replace Syfony with regular lens. Loss of sharp vision and light flares, halos at night are horrible, also having dry eye problems. My uncle went with regular monofocal lenses and couldn't be happier he still needs readers but middle & far vision perfect.
@@realmusic5032 Is the Symfony lens in your left eye a multi-focal or single focal lens? Appreciate your reply (confirm) for I shall have a surgery for my cataract in 2 weeks.
I had Abbott monofocal in right eye and Rayner m-flex multifocal in left eye. I am not satisfied. While indoor I see some things double. The multifocal vision is not good, sphere -1.50 and cylindrical -0.75
Dr. Wong - Would you mind please explain the benefit and purpose of using two different types of lenses (Tecnis and Symfony)? Why not using the same types on both eyes? Thank you!
The symfony lens provides continuous range of vision from far to near. This range however does not cover the entire range of focus. The tecnis multifocal lens provides far and near vision that is not continuous. The near vision with the tecnis multifocal may be better in some patients than the symfony. So, if a patient does not read easily enough with the symfony lens, then we can place a tecnis multifocal lens to make the second eye read slightly easier than the eye with the symfony.
Hi Dr. Wong, Ok, I had the Symfony implanted in my right as your patient here. I discovered I cannot read without readers with the Symfony EDOF . Is the near focus range much closer with the Tecnis ZLB? I need to see sharpness on a camera's LCD screen up very close (to determine if I nailed an image or if I have to keep shooting). Temporarily, I'm trying a multifocal contact lens with a closer focusing range and it's pairing up nicely with the Symfony as with your patient's testimonial. Your videos are the best.! Thanks much!
The Tecnis ZLB has better vision than the symfony but worse mid-range vision. 3 common next steps: 1 adjust the focus of the symfony lens with lasik or lens exchange, 2 when your second eye has surgery, offset the second eye to read better than the 1st eye, 3 have the tecnis lens - ZLB or ZMB placed. Good luck!
I don't want halos or Starbursts that's why when I get my cataract surgery done I'm getting traditional lenses. I'm having cataract surgery to alleviate the Starbursts and halos
Most if not all doctors admit that a monofocal lens give the brightest, sharpest, and most contrast distance and night vision. So why would anyone give that up just to not wear reading glasses. I want 100% of the light going to my retina. I want to see great in dim light and no halos while driving. I love my monofocal lenses. I see better than I ever did with glasses or contacts. (age 70)
Because for some people who are still in productive years the intermediate and near vision is far more essential than far for what they do to put bread on a table. So they can compromise some far and night vision to be able to operate at intermediate -near without any assistance “crutches “

So do you have monofocal iol in one eye and multifocal in another? Are you going for iol exchange?
What is the difference between the +26 and +25 with the IOL lenses and the lower +2 and +1.75, I’m assuming her glasses or contacts px?
Great video I think it should be a law that are opthamologist discuss the lens before proceeding with a surgery thanks again for the great video

@@ShannonWongMD Thank you!
I’m doing this same with a right eye symfony, synergy in left
Useful video
Where are you located?
How is she doing now?
The Symfony is multifocal?
The symfony is an "extended depth of focus (EDOF)" lens implant.
Is the expectation that the halo's and/or starbursts will diminish over time?
they do diminish over time as the brain neuro-adapts. They never go away, but become less distracting over time.
Thank you. What causes it?

Why did she decide to do two different lenses?
She wanted better up-close vision that the second lens type was able to provide.
Volume is very low
I think Vivity lens would be better
