    I recently did a reread of the whole 2005 continuity. One book I have a weird soft spot for is RID #10 entirely because I like the way Barber was able to find a creative way to fix the Reflector continuity error from Spotlight: Wheelie(another highlight for me) and All Hail Megatron. Also I think Verity Carlo might be the best human character in any TF media.

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +4

      Great to see Verity getting some more love!
      Great pick on RiD #10! I've come to really love those RiD issues focusing on Optimus and crew interspersed with the main story on Cybertron. Not only do they fix some continuity issues, but they push a lot of the ideas seeded by Furman back to the forefront (with Barber's own twist on them, of course).

    Spotlight: Trailcutter is such a great microcosm of what the mid to late IDW comics were: Well Written, hilarious, Excellent characterwork, iconic moments... And it feels selfconclusive. It does help that Trailbreaker is my fave autobot... And the fact he got his own comic issue is brilliant to me.

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +3

      Definitely a good one! I think your assessment of it as a microcosm is dead on. And I have a soft spot for Trailbreaker, so it was nice to see him get his own spotlight issue. It was cool to see the Dark Prelude spotlight issues packed in with the toys at the time, too.

      That's awesome to hear! I think it's really cool that people found the IDW books from buying the toys at the time. @@Moonbase3 it kinda depended on which one tho. Trailbreaker had his Spotlight issue packed in, which was great, but others just had random issues of Dark Prelude packed in with barely any connection. • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +1

      Yeah, that's true. It worked a lot better when it was the self-contained spotlight issues packed in rather than stuff from Dark Cybertron. It's a shame they couldn't have done more of those self-contained pack-in stories to coincide with the toys.

I was surprised at it being more solid than I remembered it being and how much I'm enjoying it this go around. I agree about the Marvel Comics thing - it feels like a lot of inspiration was taken from both the G1 cartoon and comic. I think I was far too dismissive of the series in the past. I'm feeling much more positively on it during this latest re-read. And Chee's art really is quite good - gives the series a very unique look!

    Optimus Prime is perhaps my favourite character in all of fiction, and further than that, IDW Optimus Prime is my favourite incarnation of him.
    I love his journey, his flaws, yet his strengths. He has everything I want with Optimus Prime but isn’t afraid to challenge him, but he never feels unlikable or a monster, it just “humanises” him.
    I find his story and arc so touching and quite underrated compared to other characters in IDW.
    I while I think MTMTE is better than RID, I believe Optimus Prime is better than Lost Light and for me, that makes The Optimus Prime ongoing series / RID season 3 my favourite. There is so many other stories and characters but basically everything that helps Shepard Optimus’s story all come together as my favourite and I love how John Barber Writes the characters but my all time favourite IDW story has to be “Chaos Theory” it’s just so great, James has a super unique voice for Optimus and Megaton, and with Orion’s speech and Prime and Megaton’s “Killing Joke” moment, it’s just so fantastic to me, even though there are tons of other great characters and stories

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад

      Well said about IDW's iteration of Prime! Both him and Megatron have pretty interesting arcs throughout the run. I feel like Autobot Megatron received the lion's share of attention, but Barber definitely doesn't get enough credit for what he did with Optimus - and he did do a LOT with him. So I'm in total agreement with you on the Optimus Prime series vs. Lost Light thing.
      And Chaos Theory is a great pick for a personal favorite. I'm a big fan of that one - it was tough leaving it out here, but there's just so much good stuff from this continuity!

      @@Moonbase3 I struggle to put into words my exact thoughts on him and I certainly can’t get into all the details. I’ve honestly had thoughts of making a video essay on him just to get my exact thoughts out.
      But I 100% agree with Megatron and MTMTE overshadowing Prime and his story, which, don’t get me wrong, I love James’s version of Megatron, but i think John’s Optimus doesn’t get that same curiosity/ gets judged and criticised more, despite me thinking again that Barber’s run stuck its landing better
      Despite my love for Simon, James, Nick, Mairghread etc but John Barber may be my favourite TF writer, the way he is able to patch and fix all this wacky continuity together and make it not only semi coherent and solidly written and actually adds to the universe is very impressive, as a western Comic / Superhero fan, I love that stuff so his writing is right up my ally. Also his character work and moments are SO underrated, Optimus, Arcee, Alieron, Thundercracker, Prowl, Starscream, Sideswipe, Soundwave, Slug among so many are given SO much great moments and character development and in my humble opinion, get more satisfaction endings to their stories than the LL cast.
      I don’t want to start a tribalistic brand war fare between the titles but RID / OP is my favourite and while not perhaps reaching the soaring heights of MTMTE at its best, but RID / OP is my personal favourite from the meaning I’ve gotten for it, also I find it very underrated compared to its, don’t get me wrong, still amazing and deserving but more popular sister title

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +1

      I'm loving this appreciation for Barber! Definitely doesn't need to be a tribalistic thing - they're both good in their own ways and there's a lot to say about each title. It's clear to me that you appreciate both! But I agree that Barber is certainly underrated for his contributions to the franchise. I'm looking forward to covering more of his work in my retrospective.

    @coreymcgivney5897 Год назад +5

    Another thing I want to say is that IDW doesn’t get enough credit for how well they write the Human’s. I know the humans in RID / Optimus Prime get flack because their too mean and skeptical towards the Cybertronians, but I love it as it actually feels real, like we’ve seen humanity ostracise, demonise and be prejudiced against fellow HUMANS, how do you think they would act to race of ALIENS, especially after something like all hail megatron. If you were on ground level for that, I’m sure you would not be a fan to say the least. But the individual characters like Verity, who again, is my favourite human character and just character in general in transformers, and Marissa, her arc and relationship with thundercracker is so great, and she truly feels like a real character who has a voice and personality, who i understand, which is another reason I love verity, she feels real and well “human”

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +2

      I also thought the motivation for humanity at large made sense in the context of the IDW universe. Really tied into Revolution and First Strike nicely as well.
      I very much enjoyed seeing Marissa appear after Dark Cybertron and thought she got a really nice story and some great moments throughout RiD and Optimus Prime.
      But I agree that IDW had some really great human characters. Verity, obviously, but I even think there was some good stuff with Spike during the Costa and Barber eras.
      Poor Jimmy never got enough to do, though.

      @@Moonbase3 I absolutely do mind it as a storytelling device personally because I feel it’s poorly executed so many times. Comic books in general seem to have the feeling that they think it’s a good idea to kill off characters at random points more so than other media, though I’ve definitely seen TV shows and movies guilty of the same thing. I think it *can* be executed well, but rarely is, and losing Metalhawk is definitely a bummer, especially since the character gets so little in American fiction

    • @Moonbase3

      Fair enough. I get where you're coming from, even if I don't mind it as much. I will agree that comics as a whole frequently uses death as a way to generate a response from readers to the point where it's a little absurd, because in a lot of comics (superhero/franchise comics especially), whatever impact that death might have had is lessened when it's (usually) undone in later issues.

  • @NeilBlumengarten

    Interesting list. Furman's stuff didn't do much for me. I got most of the IDW run as part of a Humble Bundle and started reading them, honestly struggling with the first bits.
    Then I got to "All Hail Megatron," and finally started to understand why this comic run was so beloved.
    The Decepticons "winning" and taking over Earth was shocking to me. I also really loved the tension of the Cybertron scenes, with the Autbots at each other's throats, in a way we really hadn't seen before or since. The slow reveal of the "traitor" and learning the gut wrenching reason behind it was masterful, in my opinion.
    I'm not sure it's my favorite story in this run, but it ranks very highly for me, personally.

    • @Moonbase3

      Yeah, I've seen a lot of mixed responses to Furman's run online. The nice thing about this continuity going on so long is that it feels like there's something for almost any G1 Transformers fan somewhere in there.
      All Hail Megatron is a good pick, to be sure. I appreciate it more now than when I first read it years ago. The artwork is really gorgeous in that one. And I agree that the whole traitor thing (and building up to the reveal) is really well done. Well, your favorites are clearly Phase 1 heavy, barely scratching into the start of Phase 2 and completely ignoring Phase 3. The Scavengers, the DJD, Megatron’s redemption arc. What I like about IDW and the MTMTE run was how it made me care about lesser characters. And actually LIKE characters such as Rodimus and Cyclonus. This being said by someone born in 1975 and who saw the TF Movie in the theater when I was 11.

    • @Moonbase3
      @Moonbase3  Год назад +1

      You're not wrong. There was stuff that almost made the list from phase 2 and 3 that was edged out by this stuff - if I had gone to 15 or 20, you would have seen stuff like Punishment, The Life of Sideswipe from OP, Windblade v1, ROM vs TF, and probably more of the MTMTE arcs you mentioned. So I definitely still like that stuff!
      But I totally agree about IDW and MTMTE making you care about minor characters - that's something I like about the run as well. It's still pretty remarkable to me that I became as invested as I did in characters like Chromedome, Rewind, Skids, Swerve, and Tailgate. I ended up caring about them just as much as, if not more than the "heavy hitter" characters.
