Hey Elmo I did not expect to get much from this video and got a ton. Thanks for the motivation and the tips I needed a change of attitude. At 52 years old and picking the guitar up again just a couple years ago I am enjoying the ride instead of quitting out of frustration. Really enjoying your videos keep them coming. Thanks
Great advice. We've all been there. I have been playing on and off for over 50 years and still get frustrated at times. I just put the guitar down and go for a walk or drive and come back refreshed and pick up where I left off. It works every time.
Great lesson again elmo ordered a metronome off Amazon to help track progress and cutting back on lax practice and only playing when 100% focused should still be able to get 2hr a day in
Thanks for this video Mr,. Kajagoogoo! Even for old farts like me that have been probably playing longer than many of your viewers have been alive, sometimes we have to be reminded of the basics and remember where we came from. Like you, I don’t remember ever saying “I can’t”. I always thought “what I’m hearing my favorite guitar players doing is right here on the fretboard. All I have to do is find it.”
Very informative. I'm lucky to have racked up 10,000 hours by just having fun. It was never a chore, but I've never taken lessons so I'm not at your standard, but I still set (and achieve) goals regularly. Important, as you said, to practice intensely without distractions. Your brain doesn't understand if your in a performance or not so you must practice like a performance. I always remember this saying "what one man can do, any man can do". ✌️🇦🇺
I love this i discovered your Chanel not so long ago I just love this and love your advices and I do apply this advises :) work everyday day with metronome for about 25 minutes . I do one hour and half of practice and then one hour and half for practice songs and improvisation :)
I think that that if you don't have to transcribe a song by ear, and you have an accurate tab, every beginner can play every song or solo in the world, just super super slowly. It's a matter of starting with a low tempo on the software, like guitar pro7, and working your way up to regular speed, wich can take minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months depending on how complicated the song is and how proficient the person is with the guitar.
Yes - Maybe the journey is the reward as the endless road goes on and on. This video gave some good advice. I guess it's time to learn to play all those different types of scales in all those positions, but it's so much more interesting to just pick out tunes. I guess I'm lucky as there are no select guitar players whom I wish to emulate. Good video. Too often the power of belief is marginalized. Have a good one.
@@daniellarson3068 trying to capture someone else's sound can lead to hours of frustration as well as thousands of dollars spent way before it's time to spend them, largely a distraction that takes away from practice. In this regard an acoustic is better than an electric, find one you like, learn to take care of it and that's your tone.
That's the thing. There is no end as such. You'll get better, and the journey is the whole thing. As for what you say about trying to sound like someone and gear, avoid that whole gear thing. Practice first, later you can think about gear.
Thanks but i got to ask, do you know all the notes of the guitar fret board & when did that happen? Did you try to memorize it at first or does it come to you by playing songs? When playing songs I struggle where to go to play the lead unless i see someone do it on RUclips. I think memorizing the notes would kind of be useless unless you know the circle of fifths first. That is confusing to me.
Would you consider picking up some song and learn it instead of excersises? For example, I try to learn Kfir Ochaion cover of Queen Show Must Go On. There are bends (a lot xD) there is short but fast solo (never played fast and this is the hardest part for me) and what is most important to me: I love that melody. Sometimes during one session I found I see regress instead of progress. Then I have to take longer break. But I almost never practise excersises. Can I think about part of a solo as an exercise?
According to THE book by Anders Tengner, Yngwie's secret weapon was Tallee Savage. So, go to Leven's birthday party and instead of pestering Joey Tempest to let you join Europe, allow Leven to introduce you to this hot girl. 1. Have/find a girl 2. don't take anything too seriously regarding the guitar, what you play or practice (no matter how good or, bad, at that moment) doesn't define who you are as a person in the long run 3. don't play the guitar, do boxing instead. 4. 30 minutes practice a day is more than enough if it is "focused practice", otherwise grind your way thru 3-4 hours. Or do one hour per cycle, like bodybuilders, in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. 5. Don't listen to Yngve, he's full of shit. 6. listen to Paul Gilbert's interviews, he's frank and you can correlate to his practice regimen. 7. practicing the guitar is one of the loneliest activities in the world, find a woman to ease your loneliness. Otherwise you'll go insane. 8. sometimes practice electric guitar unplugged and standing up 9. subscribe to Elmo's channel, 'cause he's a normal chap.
I think you interchanged the words/concepts intense and focused a few times. You said an hour of intense practice is better than 3 hours of not (I think you used other time spans). I THINK you meant focused practice.
E,very good da#n it, remember kids drink your coffee, lots of It..ha.. I would have thought(desire) would have been in your list, but you probably have to teach people that really don't want to learn, kid's of parents that want them to learn music, that's cool, those students you can make more money off of, where as the ones with desire you can't, I used to do my scales and watch TV,, that's why I can't play today.. Hay, why'd the chicken cross the road,, to meet a rooster.. It was tired of laying eggs..ok, I go now bye'eeee...

Having Elmo as your music teacher must be awesome!
:)
So true, same for other stuff not just guitar.
Yeah, it applies to basically anything.

@0:41 Yes, earlier today

You're absolutely right. You have to be stubborn and persistent.
The first step is to realize the journey is part of the experience. Great playing is the end product.

Thanks for the Review EJK!😎🎸🎶🎵👍👍✌️❤️
My pleasure!!
great advise thank you so much.. :D
These tips will help, thank you.
Happy to help!
Have you got lessons on the three notes per string scales but played in 16ths rather than triplets ? Thanks Elmo.
No, sorry.
Great advice Elmo, 🤘😎🎸
Thanks!
- Ticha' J, today I will practice to be Rob Halford
- He don't play guitar
- Exactly!
:D

I don't think I ever memorized them as such, although I'm not sure. I play using scales as my reference point.

Sure thing. You don't have to do exercises. Just have goals and measure the progress.
Elmo is the Finnish Yngwie, or Yngwie is the Swedish Elmo, one of the two.
Haha :D
yooo you got a sponsor
Yep :)

I might have done that, yeah.
how to stay motivated in those strange times...?
Pretend that everything is gonna be alright.
get a woman, make her love you
I've found that if I make myself play 15 minutes a day, every day, with clear goals, that really helps with my motivation.
