Some truly spectacular features and details as well as some very confusing design choices. The muraled room with the sewing machine was amazing. Yet so curious with the door down the stairs being painted into the mural. Beautiful high ceilings! The 1930’s designs don’t always word with the bones and age of the building, but some of those hand painted wallpapers are very striking and might work as fabrics if you like them. Many different artistic eyes have contributed. The 1950s-60s probably weren’t the kindest in terms of what was left behind. My hat is off to the pair of you!
LOVELY HOUSE, IS IN GOOD SHAPE CONSIDERING THAT HAS BEEN VACANT FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US YOUR HOUSE, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR RENOVATIONS. GREETINGS FROM TEXAS 🤠👍
For a house that has been empty for 40 years it is in amazing condition. Such an impressive home with all the woodwork, high ceilings and floor to ceiling doors. Looking forward to more videos of you bringing her back to her glory!!
I love your house! That's my kind of project, spiderwebs and all. I hope you are able to restore the splendor that the original owners created there and that it will be a lovely home for you both,
What an adventure. I have done similar. I purchased a 100 year old house in 1994, it was a wonderful experience. Old houses are so grand and the appreciation for the old architecture and ways of doing things is something to be admired. I enjoyed it even tho I was constantly upgrading. Holiday season felt extra special with the seasonal decorating. Be safe with that lead, use proper care, stay healthy and enjoy ! Cheers !
I have lived in a "maison de maitre" for almost 46 years and I've loved all the "wonky" characteristics of this place. I live in the American Mid-West in a small town on 2+ acres (approximately 1 hectare). I hope you will love the adventure of restoring this lovely place to again...see it smile when you open the door to your guests.. Cheers and bon chance!
Lovely walk through. You did a great tour, Clare; and, your hubby did a terrific job filming. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your lovely home.
Thank you so much for the walk through of your beautiful house, I can't wait to see what you do with it. I have to say the wallpaper is amazing that blue one in the main hallway is fantastic. I can't wait to see more
I've just been introduced to your channel by Jane and Tony's video. Very glad indeed, as I follow many chateau channels, but yours had not yet been suggested. I wanted to compliment you both for the best video and sound quality of any other channel within your first videos. It's been a pleasure to have this tour of your phenomenal property without getting motion sick, or having to read lips! I'll be binging over the next week, and absolutely looking forward to seeing how much wallpaper comes down in that time! lol
One of the best tours I have seen ….well done. Thank you for showing us around your magic property! You have a great camera presence and explain everything so well. I am so excited to follow along on your journey and what a wonderful view into 1930s wallpaper! Love from Australia ❤️
Wow what a find. Congratulations! I cant wait to see what you are going to do with beautiful property. Amazingly it's in such good condition really for not having been lived in for over 40 years! I cant wait for the future videos!!
Just started following you both a couple of months ago, I’m hooked as you are both adorable, rewatching from the beginning, what an amazing property you found, you’re both very brave to take it on but I’m sure you will reap the benefits & enjoy the journey, I’m so envious that I didn’t do this in my lifetime but I will be following with massive interest & respect ❤
Welcome aboard Paula! you are part of the Journey here at the funny farm now... thank you for the kind comments. all the best from France - Clare & Nick xx
Love your new home. I love that you love all the wall papers and I'm hoping you'll keep what can be kept. In the main bathroom you mentioned that there was lead paint , however in my learning of old home renovating the peeling paint could be from other things. One - can be from putting a water based paint over an oil based paint - two - as you said the house has been empty for 40 plus years and paint will peel from the lack of temperature control. I can't wait to see your progress on your lovely home. By the way you did an excellent job of hosting your vlog and I'm assuming it was your husband manning the camera which he did an excellent job also. Whoever did the editing gets another good point! Best of luck!!!
What an awesome tour! You showed us everything we wanted to see and explained everything we would want to know about. Many blessings for a successful renovation!
Congratulations, there are so many wonderful things. Recently someone talked about throwing away hundreds of documents and the beautiful huge trunk in which they were stored. Oh my! I love your close attention to detail. The door to the wine cellar is fun. ❤️❤️❤️
I love your walk through of the house Clare. It’s just the right amount of detail and speed. I’m looking forward to seeing how you restore all of the lovely features.
What a Fantastic House! It must have been unbelievably beautiful in its prime. So wonderful to see your passion and vision. Looking forward to following you on your journey of restoration ❤️
What a beautiful place you have. Your blog's are so interesting and I was hooked on the first one I seen so subscribed straight away. I have quite a few to catch up on so I'm looking forward to them. The best of luck to both of you. Love and best wishes from Wales ❤️
I love it too! Love the paper in cloak room & the flower basket upper border--would be great if you can save that (but not the main wall bits). And great 1st floor--#2 my favorite! Or the attic or... So great! Have the police collect the shell--don't risk it yourself!!
I just found you and this is the first vlog I have seen. What a fascinating property. Some of the wallpapers are amazing. I hope you can save some of them. If not then at least frame a bit of the paper to be able to tell the homes history and because some are just pretty. You are so lucky its in such good condition considering how long it hasn't been lived in
Wow! What a treasure. Although it’s a little bit a mess, the beauty stands out. Nice that the house wasn’t vandalized and stripped of it character pieces. I would advise you not to touch the shell, it could explode. Surely there’s someone you could call to collect it safely.
Like you two!,... you've got energy, passion and curiosity This was a fun and informative house tour..Bonne Chance on your renovation journey! ..love that you are saying "la rue principale"in French instead of "the main road" and with a lovely accent too :))
The odds and sodds are mainly shirt and collar buttons and the hair clip is a hair comb for a chignon and is probably from the area around 1900. It can be turtleshell or wood.
I'm a new Subscriber today, just having discovered your channel a few minutes ago!! Thank you so much for the tour, and I look forward to more videos!! Best of luck with your new adventures in such a lovely chateau, Clare!!! USA
What a beautiful house, you certainly have your work cut out! I hope you keep a scrapbook of all those amazing wallpapers or find a way of incorporating them into the rooms. Good luck
What a beautiful house or should i say mansion everything original just my Dream home looking forward to your venture wish it was mine while you start your venture please make sure you wear masks you did mention lead paint xxxxxx
Hi Claire & Nick just found you on RUclips I'm blown away with your chateau! before you went inside I fell in love with your front doors & then you gave us a tour inside ! Wow there's lots of fabulous features throughout the chateau 👌 Are you planning to restore all floors ? Wishing you good luck 👍
Hi there! So glad i came upon your vlog! Will definitely follow it! What a beautiful house! So much character in each room! I think the first thing to do is to fix the roof to stop the leaks and damp. Have you done that?
The room behind the tiny door with the painted on panelling is probably the servants kitchen. It was typical to emulate the grandor of the main rooms for the servants kitchen without acutally having the cost of the decor (real panelling). Also the bells around the top of the romm suggest that it is a servants kitchen (the bells are used by the people of the house when calling on the servants).
just found you. How absolutely adorable. Did you say the wine had dates from 95-98? would that not say that people were still living there then? Cant wait to see more. Love the wallpaper in the hallway, it didnt look damaged, if that were me, I would see if I could give it a soft clean and keep it. Bread dabbed on the surface usually gets a lot of grime off without damaging... dont rub it though. The murals are lovely too. Going to see if you have uploaded anything else and play catch up. good luck
Hi 👋🏼 there were people living in our side of the house still using the cellar, but not the main Maison de Maître… some of the wine has been opened and some is ok, but some is a bit like vinegar 😂 x stay tuned for more…
Just found your channel. Love the house with so many original elements still intact after 40 years. Can’t tell if you’re serious when you describe the wallpapers as “lovely” and “fantastic”. I hope you’re joking? Some papers are worth trying to save, but I think you have some serious wall paper removal to consider. Look forward to following your channel.
Hi @Atomic Rancher - welcome and thanks for watching! Some of the wallpapers we do love (a lot have been removed now - but trimmings saved) stick with us we are still removing it x
Beautiful tour. Thank you. I do think you should call the police regarding the shell. Do not attempt to bring it to them. They know what procedures have to be followed. Most likely they will have a bomb squad come to you. Be safe. Jane, Philadelphia
That Hall and stair carpet is so expensive I was going to buy the same for my hall but to be honest after all repairs I took on here I forgot about it and made do with a cheaper one please get it all cleaned and keep it carpets of today are just rubbish yours is just a dream
I have seen houses that are in far worse condition than yours if I lived near you I would come and help you clean it up but south wales u.k is to far I just wish I could live in france but after retireing I became ill and now to live in France with my health would be a great risk xxx
Lovely video and amazing maison but please for the love of Marie Antoinette learn how to pronounce MAISON DE MAITRE it’s just horrendously 😬 and I do speak 7 languages so I know it’s possible merci beaucoup
Well done, Clare. proud of you. Hugs to you both
Clare, you are bloody, marvellous

I'm blown away with your chateau! before you went inside I fell in love with your front doors & then you gave us a tour inside !
Wow there's lots of fabulous features throughout the chateau 👌
Are you planning to restore all floors ?
Wishing you good luck 👍
We are planning a full restoration of the building…will take a while but we are sure there will be lots of fun along the way….
Upstairs art deco 1920's wallpaper and lights. Wow
Hi there! So glad i came upon your vlog! Will definitely follow it! What a beautiful house! So much character in each room! I think the first thing to do is to fix the roof to stop the leaks and damp. Have you done that?
We are water tight in the Maison de Maître with the roof being fairy new. Our side of the house needs some attention before winter sets in 🙁
The room behind the tiny door with the painted on panelling is probably the servants kitchen. You have allot of work ahead of you! I'm curious to know how you found this property. How much land does it have?
My goodness where do you start, top I guess!?
Those rooms r crying out for huge chandeliers and lovely wallpaper. What area of France r u in.
We are in the Charente Maritime near to Cognac. We have one big chandelier in storage so far just waiting to go in (eventually)
Does the wallpaper mostly date to the 1930’s? Looks Deco to me.
We think so, in our last video posted we think we found something to date it to 1939…
Yes, a couple of the exterior doors look to have deco style glass as well.
What part of France is your home
Just found out it is charante
