People are calling this song transphobic because of the line "boys will be boys, hiding in estrogen and wearing aubergine dreams." Yes, Ryan might've written that lyric, but this song is based off a book called Invisible Monsters with a MtF trans main character. Ever think maybe Ryan wrote this song based off the book and not on his *own personal views?*
+Brendon Urie Huh. I've been listening to this and identifying with it because I'm trans, but I'm FTM, which flips the entire meaning of the song. In particular, the line "Boys will be boys hiding in estrogen" goes from awesome to horrible very quickly. If this is any indication of the point of view of the book, I think I'll pass on reading it. Though I'll decide to intentionally misinterpret this song to suit myself, because it's fun to listen to. :D
+TheDeerstalkerHat I just wanna note, if you don't mind spoilers here.... the trans character doesn't necessarily view herself as a woman and transitioned for superficial reasons. so she technically is a "boy hiding in estrogen". hiding her past self and whatever with a new identity, totally separate from the "old" her where she lived in tragedy, compared to her new one where she lives in the spotlight, in a new shade of tragedy. hope that helps some :0
For those of you who want to know, "Aubergine Dreams" is a reference to the book that this song is heavily based off of, "Invisible Monsters." "Aubergine Dreams" is the kind of Eye pencil that one of the main characters use.
Another fun fact, the book is by Chuck Palahniuk, an author who was referenced again in this album with the song “The Only Difference Between Suicide and Martyrdom is Press Coverage”. The title is a direct quote from his novel, Survivor.
This album is a complete masterpiece, beginning to end. How else can I describe this? I've never (and am yet to) hear anything like this. I'm so honored to have this album enter my teen years, because it definitely changed me forever.
Yessss. This album came out when I was 12 and it helped define my music tastes to this day. I used to pop the CD in my shitty little radio that had a CD player and just jam in my room alone. Hearing these songs now, 13 years later, it’s like I’m that 12 year old in my room again.
Relistening this song after taking a look at "invisible monsters". Despite not liking this genre of music these days, I'm so thankful for the tribute. Also whatever you say on the lyrics won't make sense unless you read it. Everything put so well together as reference My favorite quotes from the book: "All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring." "Don't do what you want. Do what you don't want. Do what you're trained not to want. Do the things that scare you the most." "Hysteria is impossible without an audience. Panicking by yourself is the same as laughing alone in an empty room. You feel really silly"
Can't forget, "The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person." And of course, "Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I've ever known." I used to carry these quotes with me so much
People who stop listening to genres entirely instead of expanding are lame. Listen to some elton john, black sabbath, the beatles and panic. No ones impressed by “growing up” out of the music
I've never read the book but I always found this song fascinating. I love the idea of "musical fan art" and I wish more musicians would take the opportunity to make unabashed tributes to things they like. 👍
[Verse 1] Well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor Just for the attention 'Cause that's just ridiculously odd Well, she sure is gonna get it Here's the setting: Fashion magazines line the walls Now, the walls line the bullet holes [Chorus] Have some composure, where is your posture? When I say "Shotgun," you say "Wedding" Shotgun wedding! Shotgun wedding! Boys will be boys, hiding in estrogen And boys will be boys Boys will be boys, hiding in estrogen And wearing Aubergine Dreams
This song feels so 2007-2008. For some odd reasons this song reminds me when I was like 6 and walking down a high school hallway. That's just that weird nostalgic feeling from music you get.
This will forever be my favourite song. It's one of those songs that you just connect to for no apparent reason. I connect to this song more than to the book.
This song is based off a book with an MtF trans main character named Brandy. in the ending of the book, she is shot by her friend, when her friend has a mental breakdown at her own wedding. She asks the narrator to tell her story. She was a fashion model. Her favorite color eyeliner was Aubergine Dreams. She would attend parties in order to steal estrogen, since she couldn't access it any other way. To me this song doesn't seem transphobic at all, if anything it seems to be sympathetic. It doesn't misgender Brandy, and "boys will be boys, hiding in estrogen" in my own interpretation seems to be mocking the POV of a transphobic third party. A lot of this song is cruel sarcasm (as is most songs in this album) it kinda gives off the message "it's an outrage that this happened and I'm gonna yell about it"
in the end of the book it's revealed that brandy never actually wanted to transition. it was just the most self-destructive thing she could think of doing to herself.
As a longtime Chuck Palahnuik fan I never put the pieces together that this song was based off of invisible monsters until I saw something about it the other day. It’s almost like hearing it for the first time all over again. There will never be another album like this
I remember a girl gave me their first album because I memorized all the songs in a day. We became good friends after that! Hope you read this one day Judith! You're awesome
Music video concept: Camera follows normal teenager at school all through their day. When the first chorus begins, it is revealed that this kid is attached to marionette strings and there is a puppet master controlling him. "Have some composer, where is your posture?" The puppeteer snaps the kid up to stand up straight, and this continues through the the rest of the day. Each time the teenager feels freedom, the puppet master takes back control. (Bonus: puppeteer says, "when I say shotgun you say wedding. Shotgun!" And makes the kid respond with "wedding!")
Still a good song in 2021. Personally, Must of all the drums…that kick that bass drum. Always admire Spencer for his talent. Ryan on the lyrics. Brendon for his outstanding vocals.
I'm crying. 1. Because I was listening to Spotify and my WiFi was being spotty and so I thought skipping the next song would help (it usually does) and I skipped it WITHOUT REALIZING IT WAS THIS, SO IN CRYING 2. THIS SONG IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO UNDERRATED WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Music video concept: (I actually have a whole bunch of these revolving around one character throughout most of the album but shoosh, I'm just focusing on this song) The song opens with a shot of a woman lying on a bed, covered in blood and wearing nothing but her lingerie and shredded ribbons of her wedding gown. As the lyrics start, she sits up and looks around frantically, but as she stands up it's revealed that the body is still lying on the bed. She freaks the fuck out when she realises that she's actually dead and she has been left to haunt her home as a ghost. The rest of the video follows her trying to figure out what happened and how exactly she died. Turns out that it was her ex-husband who had found her and murdered her (And also made out with her corpse but no one really wants to know that) There is a flashback to the blurry black and white bedroom and two figures fighting, the woman is forced into her old wedding gown, pushed onto the bed and shot with a (you guessed it) shotgun. The camera zooms out at the final note, showing the body of the woman one final time before cutting to black.
am I the only one who thinks it would be cool for this album to be re sung by Panic! now, I know that they don't have everyone now that they had the, yes I know that sentence make no sense, but wouldn't that be cool, just to be able to see how much Brendon's vocals have evolved.

I'm reading this book right now actually, and the trans characters face no transphobia in the story,as far as I know
+TheDeerstalkerHat I just wanna note, if you don't mind spoilers here....
the trans character doesn't necessarily view herself as a woman and transitioned for superficial reasons. so she technically is a "boy hiding in estrogen". hiding her past self and whatever with a new identity, totally separate from the "old" her where she lived in tragedy, compared to her new one where she lives in the spotlight, in a new shade of tragedy. hope that helps some :0
