I'm Vietnamese and I can make the argument that her teaching is really easy-understandable and helpful for people who want to learn Vietnamese well.
+Tan Hau Thanks for watching and for your kind comment :)
I love her fluent English speaking.
Tan Hau Super!
false, this video is crap
I agree!
As a native English speaker with no experience in Vietnamese, those pronunciation charts really help! Lan does a really excellent job of teaching in this video. Thanks Lan!
Just in case you read this I want you to know, this video is SOOOO helpful, it's a shame that some languages like Vietnamese don't get a spotlight, or have as noticeable good lessons, so it's really nice to find one :)
FreakishSmile Thank you for the encouraging comment. It means a lot to us :)
@@Tiengvietoi
I was so happy when I realized you didn't have to roll the "r"
Hahah!!😄😄
Ikr that is my biggest struggle with thai
amazing actually to find an R like that outside english!
@@eternitae0_035 you dont have to roll your 'r's in thai if im correct, they pronounce it like a mix between an r flap and an L, kinda like korean but different. Correct me if im wrong, i only know like a few words in thai.
actually she's just teaching Northern Viet accent. In Southern accent-HCM accent,it gets more complicated, and sure you have to roll the "r"
I’m Vietnamese but I don’t know how to write or read Vietnamese so I’m trying to find video that is helping me which is this video, it’s very useful to my knowledge tysm!
shame on your parents.....your native language is the most valuable free education one can receive.......back in the 60's my parents who spoke polish didn't teach their 4 sons because 1) they wanted us to be ALL_ AMERICAN (BS I say) and 2)they could conveniently break into the polish language when they didn't want us to understand what they were talking. The benefits of knowing a 2nd language fluently are immense in your personal future.....respectfully get after those parents who I;m sure love you immensely and along with these lessons will be able to pick up the language quickly
chau targos Im pretty sure the OP can speak Vietnamese, but not read/write it
@@chautargos8132 Hi, I'm Italian mixed Viet and English is my first language as I went to an International School and spoke Italian to my father and Vietnamese to my mother. Vietnamese is extremely easy, people just get confused with the accents but passed that, it's a joke that Westeners might struggle with. The writing is easy and if you know the language, writing can be done with your eyes closed. Regardless, the commenter might live someone where he/she doesn't use Vietnamese (maybe only with his/her family) so writing just isn't practised as much.
I am Vietnamese too and I am adopted in a white family.I want to learn my native language and it is workinh well
@Nam Nguyễn Thank you I think I am going well so far I am still memorising letters but I am getting their,I will contact you if I need anything and thanks again
As a non-Vietnamese speaker, this is undoubtedly the clearest explanation of how to pronounce the Vietnamese alphabet I have seen and, more importantly, heard. Well done. I shall certainly be taking lessons at Tien Viet Oi. Ideally, it would be great to have Miss Lan as a teacher.
As a Vietnamese person trying to learn to read and write in the language for once, I found this useful as I can already speak the language so I was glad that your emphasise was no just on speaking
1:14 A Ă Â
2:22 E Ê
3:08 i y
3:26 O Ô Ơ
4:28 U Ư
5:11 Consonants
7:45 practice
8:25 listening
I was very intimidated to learn the language because I read that Vietnamese was one of the hardest language to learn to speak. But now that I've watched this, I know where to start. Thank you for the video.
apollosauce hardest to speak ? Please I’m dying with English here 😅
Hello i am a indian working in vietnam last five years.i saw your video it is very understable. I impress your teaching. So thank you
This was really comprehensive and helpful. Thanks!
+Josh D Thanks Josh for your kind comment. we're really glad you find this helpful :)
Thanks for providing diagrams with mouth formation, it's reminiscent of phonics and makes it easier to properly pronounce. I started learning Russian and it's almost harder than Farsi
I use to learn vietnamese with an app (words and simple phrases), I realize I should have learn the alphabet with you earlier. Thank you so much Lan and your team for this lesson
I'm living in northern Vietnam now and I'm really struggling to learn the basics of the language. This video is a fantastic starting point. I'm so glad I found your channel. Lam, you're awesome - I wish I knew you!
I think you meant Lan. :)
The first time I learned anything in a foreign language, I was in 1st grade, and my Vietnamese classmate taught me how to pronounce "ng", and they literally helped me with making my face do the right movements, and the fact that you included this in here was A. cool and reminded me of my old classmate, B. awesome & easy to understand. This is very cool. This was a really neat video, thanks for making it.
Hi Lan from 4 yrs ago!😁😜 Thank you and TVO for all the hard work and effort in teaching us for all these years. You guys deserve much more subscribers!!!
God. You have made something that terrifies English speakers seem so easy! I wish I had come across this channel a few years ago.
I haven't seen this kind of video that teaches Vietnamese's alphabet very well. I love this video and thank you for sharing this. I will subscribe it. :D
holy cow! usually it's rather easy for me to learn new languages but these vietnamese alphabets are giving me such a hard time. even though the instructions are clear and especially the visuals are very helpful, i'm still struggling to hear the differences between the different vowels. i swear to god it's the same o all the time!! frustrating, but it's the challenge that makes it so aspiring.
I'm really thankfull for your channel. I'm french, and i could work my English with learning Vietnamese. It's not the easyest way, i could do it only with your channel. Cam on!
Florian oi. Thank you for supporting our channel. We'll keep making videos :)
I am learning Vietnamese now and this makes so much sense the way you teach. Thank you!
The most helpful lesson I’ve ever had in Vietnamese! Cam on!!
Overall this is probably the most comprehensive & easiest to understand video I’ve seen on the basics of Vietnamese pronunciation. I should only have to watch it a few times before I have the alphabet memorized and that should make studying the rest of the language a lot more doable
probably the best examples/teaching of how to pronounce the different vowels that I've seen/heard (so far...)
I watched it more than 100 time thank you teacher I understand it now it so easy for me now next stuff is reading a Vietnamese book or story book then I learned how to read and speak thank you teacher this is the first video I watched im a English to Vietnamese translator now ....thank you again teacher.....
mika ella you’re very welcome! :)
Thank you! You are very clear! I tried to follow someone else's video without first trying to learn the Vietnamese alphabet and I realized that I was going to first learn the alphabet. :D
Finally I might be able to read this all the videos I have found so far haven't been as good.
My friend will be super pleased when I can read her Vietnamese.
I'm surprised this channel doesn't have 10 times the subscribers.
Thank you so much for posting this! My college roommate is getting married in Hanoi this November and I want to learn some before I go.
CCRhorst Hope you Find thí helpful :) we’ve made two videos on basic phrases for traveling purposes. Check them out :)
Im Canadian and wish to travel to Vietnam someday and possibly find a job teaching english. Thank you for the video teaching the alphabet. I've been learning introductions, but its necessary that i also learn this as well so thank you😄😄
thank you for all the support! keep it up! consider signing up for a course with us at tiengvietoi.com when you're in Vietnam!
Thank you for the video, this is so far one of the best teaching regarding the vowel, I have watched different channels, but only after watching your teaching, I finally can tell the difference between a, ă, â & e, ê, and how to pronounce it! 😊
Thanks for the video! My parents are Viet but never taught me how to speak it :I. All I know is rice, water, and want in Vietnamese.
I love that even your alphabet has the cool pointy hat.
I’m really enjoying learning Vietnamese and wondered about the alphabet. This video is really creative and excellent teaching!
This is one of the best sites for teaching Vietnamese. I find it interesting you refer to one form of vowel "with a hat".
This is how we referred to the accent circonflex in the French language as beginning learners in the 80s. My classmates called it the "Chinese hat".
Yes, it is. We try to find an easier way to call and explain the diacritics, so it's easier for learners to memorise.
I think that we have talked about this, but the normal "d" has the "yuh" sound. You can hear it in the southern and central dialects.
Thank you very much! Great video👍🙏❤️
Practice after lesson starts at 00:07:50
Thanks so much for this video I have a really nice friend that speaks Vietnamese and I’m trying to learn it for her :)
By far the most useful pronunciation video I've seen.
I Love your lesson, u are super optimistic person like most vietnamise people , thanks for that
ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT! GEAT! Thank you so much Lan. I am a total beginner and this is really superb how you teach and explain, so peoaple from different cultures and language background can really pick it up fast, child's play! Thank you very much again and keep it up.🤩🤩🤩
This was very helpful. Possibly the best video I've seen on the alphabet. For me personally.
+Kendawg McAwesome Hi Kendawg thanks for your kind comment. It means a lot to us. Please subscribe we'll keep making videos :)
Older video but even more effective. Not sure if they're still teaching, but thank you guys so much!
Thanks Brandon :) We're still making new videos every week :)
I hope you can make more videos. I can speak Vietnamese but I can not read or write. Thank you for making this video.
+JohnTanNguyen Hi John thanks for watching. We'll definitely make more videos but maybe in a few months because we're on another project at the moment. If you want more lessons you can follow us on facebook facebook.com/TiengVietOi :)

Thanks a lot! This video has been very useful! I liked the drawings if the vowels a lot, they helped me to understand better how to pronounce them. Such a good lesson!
A very well presented and professional lesson.
We students are very thankful for your lessons.
Keep up the good work.
+Kana Masai Hi Kana thank you so much for your kind comment. We're very happy that you enjoy our videos. We will make more in the future so don't forget to subscribe us :)
This is great to show the actual movements of the mouth!
So easy to understand, and first class explanations and demonstrations
This is great! Do you have a chart (or a tutorial) that lists the vowels that only go after a specific alphabet? For example, alphabet "C" only combines with ă, â, o, ô, ơ, u and ư. This will be a great help for us beginners. Thanks!
D sound is a Y sound in English in Central and Southern Vietnam
R- Saigon people roll their tongues
S- southern Vietnamese don’t roll their tongues but some people do.
thank you for such informative insight!
Teacher and teaching both are beautiful.
She might have gotten older by now..but, I hope her teachings are still helping to the next generations..
she does a really good job explaining. thanks.
Outstanding explanation and demonstration of this very important “foundation”. Thank you 🙏!!!!
tango down You’re very welcome! :)
Perfect, that was exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks
Mo Adam Thanks for the feedback! This was one of the first videos we made. We’ve improved in video and sound quality over time, you can try more recent videos of ours and let us know your feedback :)
This is beautiful. You’ve helped me a lot. Thanks
the better explanation that i have about that thanks
hi. i'm vietnamese. i'm studying english. i want to make friend with all peoples who use english. we can exchange the language. my skype is: phamtuan.ceo and my facebook: facebook.com/pham.tuan.712
Thank you I am an American living in Vietnam and wish to Learn the Language. It is Difficult but I will try 8-)
i really like how you go about your course. i still remember my grade 1 teacher pointing with her ruler to the alphabet and the entire class had to repeat it. that is how we learned english. this teacher goes about it in the same way but, in vietnamese. i think her students will pickup the language if they follow her.
thank you, we're very glad to hear that you found the video helpful
Thank you so.much ma'am I am new and I want to learn Vietnamese language give the right direction for me.

as for consonants, although I'm more interested in Southern accent this is still a good example of pronunciation for the consonants (Northern accent) ...
This made learning the alphabet 20 times easier.
0:52 a ă â
2:22 e ê
3:09 i
3:27 o ô ơ
4:28 u ư
5:10 consonants
This is the best tutorial, specially with the tongue position as sound are different...
This is the best video for learning pronunciation that I've seen. Even better than Annie, which is strange as she's usually the best. Shame you stopped making videos.
Thanks for the kind comment Navin. We did stop making videos for a while as we were carried away with other projects for our group. However we're back now and for the past month we've been uploading at least 1 video a week and we're gonna try to keep it up at the speed.
Please subscribe us to be informed of our new weekly videos :)
Well.. will have to watch this video many times! :D
The consonants are pronounced as same as "Devnagari" or "Marathi" (one of the Indian🇮🇳 Languages) letters. 😂♥️
This was really informative and a good video✌️
The final part on spelling the word after you hear it was extremely helpful. Does anyone know any more videos like that part?
Guy Collishaw if you want, I can teach you some VNmese. I can explain phonatics in English for you
First of all, I notice that,Vietnam doesn’t have its own indigenous alphabets. But adopted from the French or Latins. And there’s another Asian country adopted the French or Latin alphabets also . It’s Indonesia. I have been trying to learn Vietnamese, but found it confusing because the pronunciations are different from English. The writings are the same except the phonetics . However, I love the sounds of the language, when spoken by the natives.
This is so helpful I have two children starting in my class hat only speak Vietnamese
Thank you! We're glad that you found it helpful.

It was fun learning Vietnamese alphabets
Great video!
One suggestion: It would be really nice, if you'd include the translations for the sample words - that way you'd expose people almost subliminally to some vocab ;)
That's a good idea Anh. We'll apply it in our next videos :)
Great video! It helps a lot. Thank you for it!
I'm an Native Vietnamese, and as my first language, i confirm that this have no lie.
almost similar to vovel pronunciation in Indonesian. but we don't use special characters. we only distinguish how to read it according to our habits when pronunciate it.
But im still confusing when read vietnamese hehe
Thank you so much for this very helpful explanation! 🤗
i do not know Vietnamese but i am watching this video and it is great for me
Thanks for helping me with the vietnamese alphabet
This is So helpful, like Extremely! Thank you so much!!!
Great tutorial and easy to understand. Practice time !!
Thank you! I've started Vietnamese in Duolingo, but they don't teach the alphabet!
Jennifer Burns haha. It seems like try to copycat some conversational sentences to be put in some indentified contexts
Duolinguo is quite difficult for beginners when it comes to any language😅I don't recommend to start with it😂
+J.Burns +Yuuki Interesting comments about Duolingo--worth keeping in mind if I ever commit 100% to learning this (or some other) language, thx
Eres muy hermosa y enseñas muy bien greeting since latinoamerica
This is so amazing. Thank you.
finally she makes it make sense to me.thank you bigtime.
I’m currently learning korean but my friend is learning Vietnamese and I wanted to see what it sounds like. It actually sounds a lot like chinese and I’m pretty shocked by that. She kept trying to teach me the tone between rice and another word lol
Kk Im Vietnamese , learn Vietnamese is not really difficult, just try harder , reading Vietnam books or watch TV program of Vietnam you will master it soon
Thank you for this. You organized it very will. And the diagrams for he mouth positons are helpful except i have to think about this when i speak heheehhehehhe Love you.
I am so happy that I found this. I will be moving to Vietnam around late September early October. I will be investing in learning the language and would love to have you as a teacher for me and my son. Your explanation is so much easier to understand. How long would it take someone to learn the language if they spent 1 hour each day 7 days a week?
Hi Toni, it's lovely to hear that you're interested in learning our beautiful language, it's hard to tell how long it takes to master a language cause it depends a lot of each student's learning pace. At Tieng viet oi, we have experienced teachers that can tailor the course to suit your need, contact us on www.tiengvietoi.com/ to sign up for online/offline lessons. Looking forward to hearing from you again!
I like your way of teaching
very helpful introduction.
Thank You for the Fantastic Video...!!!!!!
Cảm ơn anh ạ!!!
I can learn from you!
Hey Lan. Firstly, your videos are a really great learning resource that I have found very helpful (even though I live in Southern Vietnam :) ) I wanted to ask if you mind me embedding them via RUclips on my personal blog?
No problem Paul, go ahead. I'm glad you enjoy our videos :)
Pretty good!!! I am in Vietnam ! This help me a lot !
I like this lesson. I like the official “r” pronunciation. Would a northern speaker understand rât rather than zât? Cảm ơn
I’m Filipino and this video helps a lot 🤗
The only thing that confuses me is the way you pronounce the letter D.
You mentioned that you’re speaking the northern dialect. I’m taking Vietnamese class at my church, and my teacher also is teaching us the northern dialect. But we pronounce D with a Y, but you’re pronouncing it with a Z.
Besides that. Thank you for this video, I will be rewatching it several times!
D as Y is more accurate
@@lucidzzdream no the Z is accurate that's what we've learned at school in Vietnam. some people might pronounce D with a Y bcoz there are many Vietnamese dialects as in English (us English, UK English, etc.) but we do have a standard common Vietnamese and it indeed doesn't have a Y sound.
@@djinnie4379 No D as Y and Gi as Z.
@@lucidzzdream no both D and Gi are pronounced as Z.
@@lucidzzdream D is "z" and Gi is "y" bro.
But when they mix with others word, they pronoun same
wonderful, i will introduce this video and channel to other!
Tank you very much. God bless you forever
Actually, i am an Authentic Vietnamese, but having no experience to teach a foreginer friend so that is why i am here to get some skills to teach him Vietnamese
I was understanding you and it makes sense and the alphabet was easy to do the others were good to Cám őn 😊❤😁🤗
I just wanna say thank u so much ❤️
Thank you so much to make this video very helpful for me
