The reason it has so many screws is that the capacitive sensing mechanism requires a consistent pressure on all the sliders so all the springs are compressed consistently. This is an issue custom capacitive splits had to grapple with.
Thank you for the contribution! This video was semi-rushed so I just did some bare minimum research on the whole mechanism/history/inner workings of the technology. I'm only more familiar with the modding/lubrication process.
Technically, several companies produce similar technology. There's Niz, which is the closest, a few other dome with slider switches (although some are not capacitive) and plenty of capacitive options ranging from the model F to Varmilo EC switches.
That's true! But it was pioneered by PFU Fujitsu so I used that as their reference. This video was semi-rushed so I didn't really bother with much backstory delving cos I needed to film and finish it in a short timeline. Maybe a different video for a different time.
Not sure about the regular hhkb, but the JIS has around 20 screws as well, so not much better there. The worst part in modding hasn't been explored here, which is changing the rubber domes - the trouble with those is aligning them properly as they no longer stick to the board normally.
This is true, people either love or hate Topre... there is no in-between. It's smooth, has a rounded tactile bump on the top and you will bottom out no matter what. Also, I would say the typing experience is very different depending on the board. Realforce and Leopold have a hard bottom because of the metal plate while HHKB are much softer to type on. Personally, I prefer HHKB. Topre requires breaking-in as stupid as this may sound. The domes gets stiffer with time, and 45g Topre is heavier than 45g MX style. As for lube, 3204 or very light 205g0 has given me the best results. As shown in the video, lubing reduces the rattle and makes it even more smooth, but it will make the keys feel a tad stiffer and you lose a bit of tactility as well. If you tried and have plenty of MX style keyboards, its always nice to have a Topre board because nothing feels like it.
Mlice66 Chinese topre fancy Alice clone, I just got one because I was curious if it was any good, it’s ok. I would probably suggest the 35g dome version I got the 45 and it is a bit too stiff right now; but after a break in period it should be ok I think
Personally, I like NIZ boards more, thought they have "topre" like switches, they feel great and much quieter. and cheaper. and you can replace keycaps! lol for the win - niz. cherry style switches = garbage.
i have a topre keyboard, the futzitsu realforce r2. great keyboard, cost arm and a leg and i love it, customizing it on the other hand is quit the challnge, to find keycaps for it is a pain in the behind, to nod it more? good luck cause you gonna need it lol
Ok.... you passed my personality test when you said "I like Topre". Very chill video and well made. Also spot on the "you love it or hate it", there's no in-between. Lots of cool custom EC stuff coming out this year * wink *
You should use a sharpie to remove the sliders, works perfectly, get a good handle on it and press on the middle of the slider, it will pop right out and it is just ever so slightly too big so it won't go through the housing.
≠ membrane because there isn't a membrane sheet But it is a very expensive rubber dome keyboard, yes Sounds interesting, categories can have variation in quality, so I'm not too worried about that really
Vintage keyboard collector here- try harder next time, it's a rubber dome board there literally isn't a membrane, it's a capacitive keyboard that uses rubber domes for tactility, that give a firm bottom out feel because of the backing PCB. I do not personally like Topre, but I know what it is and why I don't like it atleast, not my personal feel.
For any keyboard you could tell me that pressing a key makes a light turn on so the little men inside the computer know which letter to write and I'd just be like "hmm, interesting!"
I'm not denying the fact that there is a difference in sound between pre and after mod but shouldn't the sound recording be done with the flip up feet in the same position?
Hey jeff, thanks for the feedback, we'll note it, but the video was shot on a short timeline so some things had to be wrapped up cleanly. I'll keep it in mind for next time.
Giveaway still going on for the next few days: gleam.io/kavOW/mechastore-keeb-giveaway
Maybe you guys should get a polarizing filter for the camera to eliminate reflections from the plastic.

2 lines into trying to explain how topre switches work:
magic shit happens then the key is pressed
this channel makes me want to visit SG

He knew EXACTLY what he was doing with that title and the thumbnail
probably wishing he volunteered for modding a hhkb instead halfway through unscrewing the pcb xD

@@YTHandlesWereAMistake it was before the realisation that there's a lot of stems to pop out and lube!
same experience, lotsa screws, but i never figure out how to remove the rattly feeling in the spacebar, after i apply all kind of mods i could find.

is it just me or all mecha members look like crin... or maybe theyre clo-
Can we use the same Kryotech used for the switches for the stabilizers as well or what would you recommend for them?
Kryotech 205g0 works well
Yeah they better not swear.... 12:54 "Everything works, SUCKS ASS" 😂

Not sure what I expected when I subbed but I'm glad all the guys at Mecha are great and fun to watch

Great vid would have loved if the backing music was slightly quieter compared to the speaking volume.
Topre so cool!
Do you guys do topre modding service?
We say yes, but mr Boogieman here wouldnt be too pleased

What program do you use for typing test?
Monkeytype
Looks like monkeytype but also not quite

This is cool kinda want more unique mech keyboard videos like this
this is not a unique mech keyboard video because the keyboard here is not a mech keyboard...

Topre modding feels like how keyboard modding was a half a less than half a decade ago for MX style keyboards
Not a fan of lubing Topre boards, you lose too much of the thock.
