I got my 40mm today and had it out for a shoot this afternoon. I have no complaints about the build quality and price. The lens is quite a bit sharper than F mount equivalents and while it does have a plastic mount, I find the build quality equivalent to the 50mm 1.8 G that I also have. I do have the 50mm 1.8 S lens and love it, but for street photography I find the 40mm more useful, and I really appreciate its lower profile and light weight on my Z6. It’s easy to carry and doesn’t draw attention to itself, and I love the images I’m getting from it.

The performance of this seems better than the RF Canon for sure. I don’t understand why you get hung up on metal lens mount? The lens weighs nothing meaning there is very little strain on the bayonet. And nobody is going to switch lenses 200 times a day like a photojournalist in the 1970’s.
The Nikon is weather sealed except for at the barrel. The canon is not. How about the Sony?
Importantly the Nikon is internal focus, the Canon focuses externally. How about the Sony?
Why get hung up on the mount while not commenting on these other aspects of the lenses that in my experience are more meaningful.
300 seems fair to me considering the build quality and performance. And you can’t really compare a full frame lens with an apsc lens. The latter has smaller glass and therefore costs less to make.

Additionally, the Canon focus breaths a lot and the Nikon 40mm f/2 almost not at all.

The Fuji lens is an APS-C lens - this is full frame - it should be more - it is still a very reasonable price for what is offered. I actually prefer 40mm to 50mm - although I do have both 50mm S line lenses for Z Mount (1.8 and 1.2) and they are both incredible - class leading lenses - the 50mm 1.8 S being perhaps the best 50mm 1.8 AF lens by any manufacturer and the best 50mm lens period for under $2k - but as you point out it is significantly bigger than this lens and the 1.2 which is stellar is giant (it should be - its optics are incredible and it has little focus breathing - unlike the Sony which focus breathes badly). This lens is a winner for a light general walk around and/or travel lens.

The Canon and Sony 50 1.8 are full frame, well made, both have a metal mount, the Sony has a lens hood, and both are $100 to $49 less than the Nikon 40mm f2. I haven’t used the Canon 50 1.8 RF but I own the Sony, and it’s a solid performer. AF is noisy, but otherwise it compares favorably to the 40 f2 for less money.
Focal length aside, I just think this lens is overpriced. Ideally it should be $199. I could have swallowed a $320-349 price point had they used a metal mount and included a hood.

@@StuffYouMightLike The whole Nikon Z lens lineup is pretty expensive compared to the F mount version: 20mm 1.8, 85 1.8, ... all Z versions cost 30-50% than their F counterparts. Nikon takes financial advantage of trying to keep 3rd party lenses out and offering outstanding sharpness with most of their Z lenses. I might buy the 40mm just for being so much more compact and is close enough to 35mm which I prefer over 50mm. As the current Z 1.8 primes are relatively big and as the f4 zooms are so astonishingly sharp, I haven't seen much need in the 1.8 primes yet.

@@StuffYouMightLike a comparison would be great. I wish I could do a side by side but no longer have any Sony gear. From what I remember of the Sony the Z 40 f2 has these advantages: much better/quieter focus, less CA, smoother bokeh, corner sharpness (believe it or not), size and build quality despite the plastic mount (weather sealed and no extended zoom). Sony comes with a hood. Are those advantages worth the $50 price difference. For me 100% yes.

@@StuffYouMightLike The Canon 50 1.8 is a MASSIVE focus breather - shit lens for video - the Nikon 40mm f/2 has almost no focus breathing. The engineering in this lens outstrips the Canon 50 1.8 by a lot and the price is absolutely warranted. My understanding is that the Sony 50 1.8 is older and not great either but admittedly this is just from memory and I am less familiar with it. The Nikon lens is very good for the price and priced properly.

Picking this up later today. The S line is out of my budget currently so it was either this or the Viltrox 35mm f1.8 but for the price, I bought this instead.

Good review. I prefer having lens hoods included and use them, but I can see omitting it on a pancake lens. I’d probably put an old-fashioned rubber lens hood on this little lens.

Erm... your location shots at wide open point to less sharp corners, it's not a fair test, the corners are on a different focal plane to the centre, by many inches.

Why didn't they make 24mm and 35mm instead? or 35 and 50? Strange choice of FLs, but I like it on my Z6. At 5.6 it can make some very sharp panos if it's not wide enough.

  • @robfryphoto

Does this lens really need a metal mount? It’s so light it’s never going to put any strain on the mount and I’m pretty sure if you’re rough with your gear something else will break way sooner than the plastic mount!

Cracking video, love your presentation style, nice one! Very informative without being over techy. Just ordered mine, delivery (UK) in about 30 days. Not bothered about the plastic, intend leaving lens on, it’ s OK for my needs. Price in UK £249, a bit cheesed off about lack of lens hood, I’ll get over it, just happen to have one in my camera back. Thanks, again, for great video. Have liked & subscribe. Cheers, Tom.

The price was what stopped me from purchasing this lens, for $300.00 it should have a metal lens mount, weather sealing and a hood. It may be twice the price but I'm going with the 50mm 1.8S, from the reviews it looks like a killer lens.

    There is a 28mm f2.8, there is 40mm f2, what will be next? 70mm f2??? I got the 28mm f2.8 free when buying a full frame, so i went for Z6 with kit 24-70mm f4.
    Now going for 40mm.
Definitely I will go for a 70mm like these cheap range plastic mounts if Nikon releases the next lens... But I will stay away from Viltrox 85mm though they r good lens and cheap but if ur unlucky then there is no point of regretting 😉 so best to stick with nikon lenses or wait for Tamron.

I have shot mine on my Z50 in addition to my Z6 and Z6II. It works like a charm and the IQ is very good. Basically the only difference is that you have a 60mm field of view instead of 40mm which is still a decent environmental portraiture focal length (akin to a 58mm). Bottom line, I like the lens on my Z50 and my Z6's - great applications for both.

    What's your opinion on 40mm Z f2 vs 50mm 1.8G ?

    • @StuffYouMightLike
      @StuffYouMightLike  3 года назад +4

They’re two different beasts from different times. The 50 1.8G autofocus isn’t really suitable for video, so the 40mm is better in that regard. The 40mm is sharper too. Still prefer the 50 focal length though.

If tossing out the plastic mount and replacing with a metal mount costs $29 then there should have been a discussion at Nikon about that. Throwing in a lens hood in that $29 would have been a different discussion. I think the price is fair, especially against the Fuji. There are no real options in the z mount for something like this, so they priced it at a balance. They probably making a good return, the consumer getting an entry lens. Trade-offs.
