There was one transit police car at each end enforcing speed limits (because of the road works being done) and so that's who stopped the traffic. Some people aren't getting the perspective on this.
That ship is _not_ moving parallel to the bridge at any point in this video, not even close. You might think that's the side silhouette of the ship in the dark, but that ship is _way_ longer than it is tall. We're seeing it way closer to the front than from the side.
From side on, if it were travelling parallel to the bridge, you'd see a silhouette that wouldn't even fit between the pillars at the side of the screen, a silhouette almost as long as between the two central pillars.
The ships initial heading here was 141 degrees, i.e. it's heading for the middle of the gap between the two center pillars, to pass under the middle of the bridge. The yaw to starboard when it went of course was just 12 degrees.
Also, this version of the video is playing at about 6x the speed this happened in real life.

Befoe the black out the ship was on correct course, power goes out they drift for a while and when the power comes back, they are on course to hit the bridge so they go full throttle (black smoke from the exhaust stacks) but because of how big and heavy the ship is, there wasn't enough maneuvering time. @@Plab1402 I've worked on bridge design. No bridge can take a 100,000 ton lateral hit. Unfortunately, this bridge was not designed with sufficient protection around the pylons (I believe it had some basic "dolphins", but not enough to stop this) to be able to absorb all of the kinetic energy in that ship. On many bridges, there are extensive underwater structures built around the structural parts of the bridge (in an oversimplified way, think of a huge pile of boulders) that would potentially be able to stop the ship before it hit the actual bridge. Like everything else, those doing the construction must weigh the cost of these sorts of things when proposing a cost for construction. If anything I would say this should be a wakeup call for us as a country to look at the most critical bridge infrastructure and consider such an investment. From what I've read, this is going to create quite the supply chain snafu for this area. Very sad.

After learning more during the past 24 hours: 1. The Dali lost steering (rudder) but the single screw engine was running. The ship was experiencing power outages while underway. 2. Dali was moving forward at 7-8 knots when the exhaust cloud was seen on the video. This was caused by reversing the engine to slow or stop the vessel. 3. Like any single screw vessel it pulled hard to starboard (right hand direction) when thrown into reverse but kept moving forward. Even in reverse a nearly 1,000 ft. container ship will not stop on a dime. The rudder was not available to counteract this pull to starboard. This is what caused the hard right turn toward the pylon. 4. The Dali ran directly into the bridge pylon.

Also the angle makes the ship look like a shorter ship going _parallel_ to the bridge, as many of the commenters have mistakenly believed (as if the ship was heading for the shore at Dundalk, rather than aiming to go under the center of the bridge).

Well, my guess is that the ship's captain ordered all engines full astern a couple of minutes before impact. When the power started, they saw they were getting dangerously close to the bridge. Full astern means throwing the ship into reverse immediately, usually only used in emergency situations because of an impending impact. The reason I think this is because of the speed at which the ship's stern turned a few seconds before impact. Ships, especially cargo ships, don't usually turn that fast unless they've already been slowed down (in this case, by the full astern order). When they saw how close they were, orders were probably given to turn hard to port (turn right) in order to quickly correct course and navigate under the bridge but sadly the ship ended up turning too fast and it ended up making it collide head on. However, the power failure looks like it started before this footage even began. This is all speculation, though, and we won't know for sure what happened on board until the rescue efforts cease and investigation begins. All we can do as people right now is pray for the people who went into the water if you're religious and keep your thoughts with them if you're not.

The turn looks more dramatic from this angle, especially because people are misjudging the angle the ship is travelling at, at the start of the clip. The ship is WAY longer than it is tall, but it looks shorter here because of perspective, and assuming it was going _parallel_ to the bridge and then made a 90 degree turn. In fact it was heading to pass under the middle of the bridge, heading about 140 or 141, and it drifted off starboard maybe 15 degrees... not 90.
They also dropped the _port_ side anchor, which would be an attempt to reduce the drift to starboard. In other words, trying to _prevent_ it drifting into the pillar.

Either they had to steer to "stay in lane" (not wanting to hit land, other ships, etc.), but you can see that power turned off again after they started turning. So the rudder was still turned to make the ship crash into the bridge.

@@davidmathews9633 But that could be a couple of factors. If they lost power as they went past the Curtis Channel (which is between the bridge and the port, look on a map) then without full engine or rudder control, the current hitting the stern would push it to port (tide was going out at that time).
Also, if they got power back on, and then ordered full reverse on the engine in a desperate attempt to stop, there's another problem waiting to bite them in the butt.
If you put the engine into reverse, it takes a while for it to take effect along the line of the ship, and initially it is kicking water to starboard, thus kicking the stern to port, which makes the bow tend to starboard. If there was limited power there's not much to counteract that, (eg. small bow thrusters that are used for berthing at slow speed) and dropping the port side anchor.... and they did in fact drop that port side anchor. The chain is visible in the water in all the daylight images of that side of the bow.
Sometimes a lot of things have to go wrong at the same time for something like this to happen. It's rare, but I can think of 4 other bridge collapses in the US caused by ships or freight barges in my lifetime, and a few more in places like Sweden, Australia and just last month 5 people were killed in China when the bridge they were driving on partially collapsed after being hit by a cargo vessel.
