I was giving her several grand for 'rent' and to pay her utilities but she never paid them and just took whatever money I gave her to the near-by casino. She begged, borrowed, and literally stole from everyone in the family and everyone she was friends with to feed her addiction. She eventually ran up about a quarter million dollars in dept in about 5 years by taking out multiple mortgages on some nice property that had been in the family for years. To this day I still have some aunts that blame me for 'ruining the family' for not stopping my grandmother from running up all of those dept because I as living with her while I was trying to go to college. Even through I was working 2 jobs on top of try to go to school and couldn't watcher her 24/7. Never even was able to finish school, and somewhat ironically it wasn't even because of the gambling, it was because the professor that was running my program was an army reservist and *_died_* shortly after he got called up during the Iraq war in the early '00s. After that the college decided to just terminate my degree program instead of bringing in another professor to administer it and I just couldn't afford to move to another part of a state to finish my degree.
Second story: Honestly I forget many things even if they're important, I confuse dates and many other things. For example, tomorrow is my mom's birthday, and I thought it was today, if it wasn't because she mentioned that tomorrow was her birthday, I would've told her happy birthday today. I also have the issue of changing the number of the birthday, for example: my mom's birthday is September 3rd(tomorrow in the time I'm writing this), and my brother's is April 6th. Well, it wouldn't be the first time I tell my brother happy birthday in April 3rd, or even confuse birthday dates of friends with relatives and say happy birthday to a friend and it ends up been the birthday of someone else I know. So, I do get why the op would get upset, but if she already knows he's bad at dates, she shouldn't think it's because it's not important to him, that's just over thinking it too much.

As to the person forgetting a birthday, some of us are legitimately really bad with dates, even if it's important to us. We will even get a weird feeling on some dates like we forgot something but have no idea why

Then, instead of just telling him "Hey, my birthday is next Tuesday, don't forget!" she vaguely mentioned it was coming up in a conversation about something else. Of course the guy forgot, he isn't good with dates! I can relate to OP's boyfriend in that second story. I'm terrible with dates too. For instance, even though I'm almost 30, I never managed to remember my older brother or father's birthdays until last year without outside assistance, despite them having the same birthday. What's the big deal with the birthdays thing? I really don't get why people make birthdays a big issue. I don't even care when mine is around and treat it just like any other day of the year. I don't attach any additional value to that particular day. I treat myself whenever I feel like and don't wait for 1 specific day in a year. Till I was 15 my parents used to organise a party every year, get a cake, new clothes for me, gifts and all that. The time of the year when my birthday comes, my father's work requires them to stay back and work longer hours, so due to this my parents always made sure to have my birthday celebration the weekend prior to my birthday, so it was kind of like 2 birthdays because of that. Afterwards I stopped celebrating birthdays and don't attach any special value to it, I have kept that date as a guarded secret and don't reveal it unless its legally required for some forms. I have asked everyone around me to not call me up on that day to wish that. If someone does wishes me on that day it will piss me off for an entire week.

If he is like me, or any number of people with a similar issue no amounts of reminders on their phone, calendar markings, or anything really, will fix it.

Nope. I am tech challenged, but even I can set birthday and anniversary reminders on my phone a whole year ahead. He isn't that into her... She reminded him a week ahead. If you know your mother has a huge rapsheet for theft and money related crimes, why would you trust her with money that you are saving for something special - like going to college? My mum is also Very forgetful because she has short term memory loss and often forgets what she's saying because she also has ADHD that makes her brain cars have a car crash because their jumping between lanes (Lanes = Thoughts) and has to Write EVERYTHING down or she will completely forget and then something will come up and she doesn't know.
Story #1--- Whenever anyone starts wondering about who pays for what that person needs to stop looking at the relationship as romantic and become an adult. An adult relationship is either a partnership or it is transactional. Someone is paying for someone else's company. If you're not in a partnership stop thinking of it as a potential marriage. It doesn't matter if the partnership is equal or equitable as long as both agree. But when you start thinking about it in the terms that OP does it is time to make a contract or get out.
I do understand the BF in the second story. The last few years I even forgot my own birthday. Like this year. My mom wished me a happy birthday, I blankly stared and asked "That's today? Oh." As for the work wife..my best friend is a woman and we are very affectionate with each other. If a girlfriend asked me to stop that, I would not. 3 rd story: this is every girl's worst nightmare with male friendships. I actually can't stand men that hide behind friendship while having feelings for a girl and then, after years of her thinking that they're just friends and even making it pretty clear that she's not interested, all of a sudden it's "I'm in love with you!" And when she doesn't feel the same way, they've been "FrIeNd ZoNeD" and he abandons her because he didn't get what he wanted from her. And I'm sorry, it doesn't matter that he made sure she had other friends first, he still abandoned someone who he supposedly cared about because he didn't get his way. This is the worst, I feel so sorry for that girl, and this is her best friend .... Sorry dude, but you are definitely the AH in my opinion.
To the second story; I have problems with my memory and I often forget important dates and things to do, and me and my girlfriend have been together for 3 years and I still can't remember our Anniversary, not that I don't care about, I say its an important day for me as well. I'll put into my calendar in my phone and tablet and my girlfriend has it marked on the Calendar on the wall, and yet I still end up forgetting it.. Fortunately my girlfriend is very understanding of my problem and she knows I'm not doing this to be an ass, and knows that I genuinely care about it, and how I try to remember it. She'll remind me almost daily within about a week or so beforehand to try and help me remember, and so I can get her something beforehand.

The time of the year when my birthday comes, my father's work requires them to stay back and work longer hours, so due to this my parents always made sure to have my birthday celebration the weekend prior to my birthday, so it was kind of like 2 birthdays because of that.
Afterwards I stopped celebrating birthdays and don't attach any special value to it, I have kept that date as a guarded secret and don't reveal it unless its legally required for some forms. I have asked everyone around me to not call me up on that day to wish that. If someone does wishes me on that day it will piss me off for an entire week.
Lol #2. So, so, sooo needy. Your birthday is not a freaking holiday, and it's not important. Stop making a big deal over nothing. Call your Mom & Dad at least, they're the ones that are most significant to your birthday.
So for the 2nd story, I'm on the Boyfriend's side. I'm legit the same way, in fact I'm so horrible with dates I not only forget Birthdays, but basically every holiday with the ONLY exception being Halloween. Like, 99% of the time I'm even unaware of my OWN birthday. If someone asks me, I can tell you when it is, but when the day is approaching and people think I'm planning something to celebrate it, I'm totally oblivious to the fact, until of course someone wishes me a happy birthday/Merry Christmas/Happy Easter (or anything that is happening) and asks why I'm not doing anything and I reply with "OH, that's today??? Really?? I didn't know"
So in the case of the 2nd story, I feel she should really give the boyfriend some leeway. If he is like me, or any number of people with a similar issue no amounts of reminders on their phone, calendar markings, or anything really, will fix it.
A birthday is not nothing saying it's nothing is like saying you never existed it is a very important date in your life

When it comes to the calendar thing, he probably would have to set up multiple reminders ON THE DAY. Week before, day before, doesn't cut it. On the day, it's likely to send the reminder at midnight when it's not a good time to call.
Nope. I am tech challenged, but even I can set birthday and anniversary reminders on my phone a whole year ahead. He isn't that into her... She reminded him a week ahead. Just enough time to run out to buy and send a card. If he cared, he should have done it that day. He is lazy and doesn't care. Otherwise, he would do something about this chronic "forgetfulness."

As far as the first OP is concerned.....I kinda blame the OP. If you know your mother has a huge rapsheet for theft and money related crimes, why would you trust her with money that you are saving for something special - like going to college? It just doesn't make sense. I'd either hide the money in the place I'm staying or give it to someone I really trust. Better yet! Open a savings account like I have.

My mum is also Very forgetful because she has short term memory loss and often forgets what she's saying because she also has ADHD that makes her brain cars have a car crash because their jumping between lanes (Lanes = Thoughts) and has to Write EVERYTHING down or she will completely forget and then something will come up and she doesn't know.
Story #1--- Whenever anyone starts wondering about who pays for what that person needs to stop looking at the relationship as romantic and become an adult.
An adult relationship is either a partnership or it is transactional. Someone is paying for someone else's company.
If you're not in a partnership stop thinking of it as a potential marriage.
It doesn't matter if the partnership is equal or equitable as long as both agree.
But when you start thinking about it in the terms that OP does it is time to make a contract or get out.
I do understand the BF in the second story. The last few years I even forgot my own birthday. Like this year. My mom wished me a happy birthday, I blankly stared and asked "That's today? Oh."

3 rd story: this is every girl's worst nightmare with male friendships. I actually can't stand men that hide behind friendship while having feelings for a girl and then, after years of her thinking that they're just friends and even making it pretty clear that she's not interested, all of a sudden it's "I'm in love with you!" And when she doesn't feel the same way, they've been "FrIeNd ZoNeD" and he abandons her because he didn't get what he wanted from her. And I'm sorry, it doesn't matter that he made sure she had other friends first, he still abandoned someone who he supposedly cared about because he didn't get his way. This is the worst, I feel so sorry for that girl, and this is her best friend .... Sorry dude, but you are definitely the AH in my opinion.
To the second story;
I have problems with my memory and I often forget important dates and things to do, and me and my girlfriend have been together for 3 years and I still can't remember our Anniversary, not that I don't care about, I say its an important day for me as well. I'll put into my calendar in my phone and tablet and my girlfriend has it marked on the Calendar on the wall, and yet I still end up forgetting it..
Fortunately my girlfriend is very understanding of my problem and she knows I'm not doing this to be an ass, and knows that I genuinely care about it, and how I try to remember it. She'll remind me almost daily within about a week or so beforehand to try and help me remember, and so I can get her something beforehand.
