    Hey family!
What is the most unique thing about Brazil's culture that we wouldn't find anywhere else in the world?

    • @richlisola1

I think one of the craziest things about Brazil is that there is a part of Brazil geographically closer to Africa than to the furthest place in Brazil.
It takes an hour longer to fly from New York to Sao Paolo than it takes to fly from New York to Moscow.
And just like how Brazilians are infamously terrible at speaking foreign languages-They really only know Portuguese, unless they have like a family that’s kept the ancestral language of their immigrant forefathers.
Like for example, some Brazilians speak a German dialect because their forefathers emigrated from there.
But otherwise Brazilians tend to be bad at learning new languages. I guess it’s the public school system’s fault.

The mix of races in Brazil is crazy. My mom identifies herself as a pardo woman, because she's got light brown skin with curly hair and large lips. But at college I've met friends who resembles very much my mother, however they identify themselves as black women. My father is a white man who is grandson of a native woman from the Goytacazes tribe. As for myself, I'm a white man from a pardo mother, and I've got uncles and cousins that are black. I love my family mix and I'm very proud of my ancestry. I recognize all the racial issues that come along with it, but you just can't deny how amazing and diverse is our people. I love being a Brazilian 💚💛💙

I'm from Salvador, Bahia. Bahia is, as Barbs showed in this video, the blackest state in Brazil. It is also the one with the deepest and most profound African influence in our culture. This is a reason why I have such a deep fascination for Louisiana. To me, Louisiana is America's Bahia. Cajun food is America's Baiana food and so on. We are so similar in so many aspects. There is also the fact that African-influenced syncretic religions such as Umbanda and Camdomble are a big thing in Bahia, just like Vodoo in Louisiana. Salvador was actually the first capital of Brazil, from 1549 to 1763, when it was changed to Rio. It is famous for its festivals and its Carnaval just like New Orleans is with Mardi Gras. It is also full of music and the smell of Bahian food is all over. If New Orleans is the "Crescent City", Salvador is widely known and referred to as "Black Rome." Problems aside, I'm proud of being born there.
You should react to this vlog about Salvador (ruclips.net/video/tZKJc9-lIUk/видео.html&ab_channel=JetLagWarriors)
African culture was so influential in Brazil that Brazilian culture would later influence Africa as well. I'll link of a video I think you should react to. It is of a Nigerian woman making Moqueca Baiana, a typical food from Bahia that was brought to West Africa in the 19th century, and telling her and her country's history with Brazilian culture. You should also see why I compare Cajun cuisine to Bahia's cuisine (ruclips.net/video/Unl9DZJCcig/видео.html&ab_channel=NYTCooking)

About the percentage of mixed race individuals, that's due to the miscegenation culture that was really strong here in Brazil (and a good portion of Latin America) for centuries. The goal was to "whiten" the population as much as possible, the lighter, the better. They did it to erase part of the African and native Brazilian people. That's also why we have so many European immigrants, sadly. So unfortunately, as diverse as it may be as a country, Brazil still has A LOT of structural racism to overcome.

in fact there is an mistake, in Brazil more than 50% of the population is black and mixed race (pardos). however, many of those who are considered pardo in Brazil are considered black in neighboring South American countries, the USA and Europe. Therefore, Brazil has the largest black population outside of Africa at around 55%.
the rest, the majority are white and a much smaller percentage are natives (indigenous), Asians, Arabs...
This enormous diversity in the country is due to the different people who settled here.
obviously, the Portuguese who were the colonizers, but also many Africans who were forcibly brought to be enslaved by the Portuguese.
There were Germans, dutchs, Polishs... who came here too, hence the large amount of white population in the south of Brazil and people with European surnames there.
Indigenous peoples are native, as they are in most countries in the Americas, including the United States.
but with colonization they were decimated and today they are a small portion of the Brazilian population.
not to mention that it also has a large number of Jews, being among the 10 countries with the largest Jewish population on the planet.
Brazil is the most diverse country in the WORLD!

That population crap is a lie... most of every one in Brasil is mixed so deep that no one knows its origins anymore... we are a great mix of white/Black/INDIAN on about the same proportion... but no serious historian go back to account to the origins of Brasilians. Beside the few Brasilian immigrants from post I and Ii world war Europe... all other Brazilians can't trace more than 2 or 3 generations back on their background. So on the beggining, white man and Indian woman was the base of the pie... 200 years latter 1/3 of the population was brought from Africa... and that whithe/Indian 2/3 are intermarring for the last 300 years. Just to correct him, actually the deforestation serve the purpose of agrobusiness, for which 95% of the food produced are exported (soy and sugar cane for example) and only 5% is actually used to feed the country. Most of the food we eat here comes from familiar agriculture (small farms from regular families) and guess what? Agrobusiness are stealing their land too!! Not to mention the genocide of the indigenous population so yeah... That's why we heavily criticize the deforestation.

The part about "pardos" in Brazil: The term "pardo" has already been disowned in Brazil for a good few years, because it comes from the colonial era, where the colonizers called black people with lighter skin. The word comes from Latin, and one of its meanings is "dirty". So when they called a lighter-skinned black person "pardo" back then, they were calling them "dirty skin". For some years these people are no longer treated in statistics as "pardos" but as blacks. In current statistics, 51% of the Brazilian population is black.

While this guy says we don't speak Spanish, but Portuguese, he still insists on using the Spanish pronunciation for EVERY word, I don't recommend this guy's video to anyone who wants to learn about Brazil, there are countless mistakes that can change the whole reality of the country. For example, the trivialization of the problem of deforestation, we don't need to deforest forests to have resources, there is life there, including human life, indigenous ethnic groups that live and grow in these environments, and that help A LOT in the preservation of the place.
