  • These films were not artificially colorized nor upscaled. They were made in original color by the Gaumont Chronochrome process. Included are excerpts of the 1912 films Deauville-Trouville & Honfleur, Enghien-les-Bains & Annot and the 1913 film of the Carnival in Nice.
Chronochrome used a camera which exposed three images through red, green and blue filters simultaneously. The films would be screened using a special projector which played all three frames over each other. This system was in use from around 1912 to 1920. Some of these clips were speed as well as color corrected.
Despite its beautiful results, Chronochrome never became widely successful mainly because of price and practicality issues.
It is unknown how many films were made in Chronochrome, but the Gaumont-Pathé archives website lists 80+ minutes of surviving Chronochrome footage, which has unfortunately not been widely published online. gparchives.com/ (search keyword "Trichromie")
Kodak bought the US Rights to Chronochrome in 1913. The only known Chronochrome films are in the collection of the Eastman House, sent by Léon Gaumont to George Eastman probably in 1912/13.

What became of other Chronochrome films in Europe is unknown.

The landscape I've seen in the paintings of impressionist painters at the time is right here and moving.
    Thanks for uploading.

These are spectacular. I'm surprised how little parallax error there is between the primary color frames.

Funny how everyone is digging in the sand with shovels instead of enjoying the water.
