I agree! Fly ins are more personable and you get a chance to meet some really cool pilots. Plus, let’s face it, at a fly in you are the main attraction 😂
Great video of a fun fly-in. You got a friend and I in my Cozy canard taxiing in from FL. Get Mike to take you for a RUclips video flight in his well-done EZ.
Mike is a really nice guy. I haven’t met him in person but we have exchanged emails. Hope to attend one of his fly-ins some day, although it would be a multi day trip coming from CA. Not bad in our VariEZ.
Hopefully you can make it over to the east coast one year. He’s a top-notch guy and great host. I can’t wait to see the turnout this year. Thanks for checking out the channel!
I wouldn’t be laughing too much. I am sure the EZ will out perform your Cessna. I was disappointed that you didn’t have an shots of the EZ flying next to you or going By You!
So he was in the Airforce for 20 years, a F16 mechanic, and a an airplane maintenance chief for 9..............and says he didn't know anything about airplanes (engines / wiring/ etc). That's interesting
I believe his statement of no experience was specific to wiring and electronics. I know plenty of a/p IA folks that don’t fool around with detailed avionics issues. Either way, I’m glad you tuned in and watched the video. Cheers 🍻!
19 years to build? I built my first Long EZ in 23 months while I was working full time. 25-30 hours a week, every week, an obsession. My second Long EZ took 4 years, mainly because I had an airplane to fly and I'd be out flying instead of working on the plane. Also, Mike Melville built the first plans built Long EZ in less than 6 momths while working full time at Scaled Comopsits full time.
Yes, but a military job sometimes comes with multiple tours months away or 12-16 hour days even when you are home-base...who knows right? And then there are the perfectionist type builder and the "...that will do fine enough quicky type..." and the anything in between I guess...
A lot of these guys sell their Long EXE for almost nothing. Why don't they tack on the 2500 man-hours in costs building it. Skilled trades $40/hour x 2500. $100,000 left sitting on the table.
Because a plane -- like anything else -- is only worth what folks are willing to pay for it. Some pilots shy away from amateur built aircraft, as do some A&Ps. It's very hard to determine the quality of the fibreglass work & you're betting your life on it & the electrical & mechanical, fuel lines, control surfaces, etc.
I’ve come to a point in my life where I enjoy fly ins more than air shows. Nothing beats them.

@@OneAV8 Have you participated in a Young Eagles day? That’s high on my list once I join the ranks of aircraft owners.
I haven’t yet. I just joined the EAA, so I’m learning how it all operates. It’s something I’d be interested in!
Mike built a quality Long Ez. The other guy that painted his black is crazy. Rutan specifically says to paint the aircraft white for heat reasons.
Indeed, Mike had built a fine aircraft!
Mikes a great guy. I actually bought a carb from him for the Long Ez I built in 2011.
That he is! He’s a great guy with a passion for aviation that is infectious!

Mike and I have agreed to go fly- we just need to make it happen! It was a great time seeing all of your exceptional aircraft!
Great video Sarge, enjoy watching them. Happy New Year !
Thanks, Bob!
Great interview! Thanks!
Mike makes it easy!

Great video! Great to see you again--thanks for coming!
We had a great time. Maybe we will see you soon!

Would have loved to have gotten shots of the EZ in flight!
great video...
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed our adventure.
My dad built an EZ and after a Cozy Mk4… N785R and then N528DR… been trying to track it down
Wow! I want to tackle building my own one day- maybe when I retire ?? I hope you find your dad’s planes- how cool would that be?
@@OneAV8 I’m 42 now, but remember growing up thinking Garages were for building planes… 1985-91 was the EZ
@@OneAV8 I hope I can locate it
@@OneAV8 just retired from the USCG…
@@OneAV8 you’re in GA, right?
Cool stuff brothaaaaa
That Long-EZ is neat! You can't mistaken it when you see it in the air...
How do we find out more about your fly ins. 7ga7. Would love to attend
Follow me on Instagram @brianscrews or Facebook. That’s where I usually post the upcoming fly ins we will attend.

How do you get a long ez bc i want one.
I’ve seen a few pop up for sale on different Facebook groups 🤷♂️. Good luck!

Yes, everyone’s life story is different. We can’t always know the journey, but we can surely celebrate in a fellow pilot’s build and success! Cheers 🍻
We have to see a load of brouhaha for half even seeing the Long Eze
🤷♂️
Cheapest method to learn to fly is a flying club
We don’t have many of those close to me… but I agree it seems like a great route to take.
@@OneAV8 A lot of them are fly by night scammers

No doubt it’s a labor of love. I can’t help but agree with you after hearing the amount of time Mike poured into building his.

It’s a gamble for sure!
