The whole castle raid was way more badass in the novels. Kazuma rubbing his back on Chris chest (which lead to them getting discovered) was really stupid but acceptable. In the novel, Kazuma and Chris succesfully infiltrate the castle, they get discovered afterwards. Kazuma and Chris entered a treasure room. Before going for the necklace, Chris wanted to find the other divine item (remember it was two items that Chris was looking for, and she thought the other one could be there). Once inside the treasure room, Kazuma notices a hentai magazine. He grabs it... and that triggers the alarm. During the fight, Kazuma uses the skill 'Bind' a lot against the guards (the ropes made by 'Bind' are not just regular ropes, they are magical ropes which are more durable. They are strong enough to restrain monsters). Once the guards are tied up, he uses 'Drain Touch' on them. Kazuma also uses 'Create Earth' and 'Create Wind' combo (two skills he has in novels that are never shown in the anime). Chris role was definitely minimized in the anime. She helps dealing with the guards that are mages and slows down the guards while Kazuma is doing the close quarter combat. They were both pretty well balanced for this mission. Kazuma also froze Mitsurugi's throat after choking him with water. It was almost flat out murder. Kazuma said to Claire that he "probably" won’t die if they tend to him immediately. Kazuma stated that defeating Mitsurugi would lower the moral of the guards, and he was right... The guards were understimating him at first, after beating Mitsurugi, the guards started to fear him. There was a moment when Rain was about to attack Kazuma with a spell by using her staff, but Kazuma uses his 'Snipe' skill and destroys the orb in her staff (rendering it useless). Finally, the reason Kazuma did a 180 in this episode is because of the Vanir mask which gives him increased stats and durability under the full moon. He even starts speaking like Vanir after he beats Claire and feeds off of negative emotions when he waterboards Mitsubishi.
This anime mostly about comedy my guy ,the changes already clear when season 1 got announced. We have some badass moment here and there so dont take it to heart. Beside, this is an anime and it purpose is always promote the source material You want more plot then read the source!
Not to mention in the light novel the shit talking and trash treatment Kazuma took for failing on the demon lord attack and catching the noble thief feels so much worse than on the anime so him being so badass in the castle infiltration is a much needed payoff.
The mask doesn't seem like it actually does anything, it seems like a placebo affect. Kazuma doesn't do anything he can't normally do, he just actually had the confidence to use his abilities.
The author said if it wasn't for Aqua, Kazuma would've defeated the Demon King within a few months, glad to see the serious side of him this episode (even with the mask buff)
I don't remember that happening in the novels though... Kazuma's buffs were implied to come from all the vitality he'd drained from all the soldiers, if I remember right. And also, his M.O. in then novels was: Cast Bind on soldier (which consumed most of his mana), drain the bound enemy to replenish the lost mana. Rinse and repeat.
