Can ANYONE save MISS USA?!

  • For nearly a decade pageant fans have watched the decline of the Miss USA organization. We wonder how much further can it fall from its former glory. Many were hopeful that new leadership of the Layla Rose Era would bring forth great improvements to the show and the experience for audiences and contestants. It seems that even before the competition has begun, audiences are already displeased with new leadership and show production. I believe this decline started before the 2023 year and that it’s been a slow process. To illustrate this, I’ve put together some comparisons and examples for you to draw your own conclusions about the state of the organization.

    I think the next wave of feminism is also leading to the declining interest and investment in US pageantry competitions. The views on beauty standards have evolved. A prime example of an organization that almost ended due to evolving attitudes on beauty standard was Victoria Secret, which had to discontinue its annual runway show. I foresee Miss USA havign to bend their standards and guidelines to allow all kinds of competitors. It’s unfortunately getting a bit too woke here in the US. That is just my two cents as a Venezuelan immigrant who’s always been interested in beauty pageants.

      @@DaniWalkerwho would step in as ND for the USA after all this crazy takeover and business requirements of MUO by JKN? MU has lost it's "pageant' essence....and after the issue of Miss USA with CS, it is quite understandable of the decline in this year's Miss USA. I hope Miss USA will bounce back and make it as one of the most anticipated pageant in the industry.

    Your analysis is spot on! One thing I noticed when the hosts were talking to the new Miss Teen USA is that they watched her compete while on their flight to Miss USA. This means the hosts arrived at Miss USA less than 24 hours in advance and probably didn’t have a lot of time to rehearse. They did a good job considering all that but it would have helped if they had time to prepare. Also I feel like I didn’t learn anything about the contestants from watching Miss USA this year which is always one of the highlights for me. The lack of energy from the crowd was disappointing and it sounded like a local or state pageant when you heard them cheer for a contestant. The stage looked a lot better than Miss USA last year and even Miss Universe. I honestly feel like that you could bring the pageant back to its glory days Dani! ❤️

    The CW and Miss USA need to make sure ALL local cw channels will air the pageant at the same time! Our CW decided a high school football game was priority and pushed the pageant to show at 10pm instead of 8 while friends in different states were seeing it live! I was at a party with several other people from my pageant organization and we had to scramble to watch the pageant live with everyone else using methods I'm sure MUA wouldn't want us to. This wouldn't happen with a major network like NBC.

    I grew up watching Miss USA and Miss Universe with my mom and have loved them throughout my adult life. Sadly, while pageants remain hugely popular in Asia and other parts of the world, that's just not the case any more in this country. Is it because of cultural changes, or because the pageants seem more lackluster? I'm not sure, but I would guess it's some of both. I do wish they would take your ideas and run with them, though!

      I'm not from the US but growing up, I always looked forward to Miss USA. I loved watching the living barbies on stage, parading in their beautiful gowns. I loved how they were so quick and articulate with their answers. The past decade, Miss USA has been in a substantial decline. From clearly choosing a certain type of winner year after year after year, to pulling back on the glam and celebration of femininity to appease the woke crowd, to what it is now. Sad to say, but Miss USA and Miss Universe were at their peak when Donald Trump was at the helm.

    When I was at Miss USA we were there 30 days before finals - 30 DAYS!!! And we filmed EVERY DAY - promos, pool parties, activities, full fashion shows around Vegas, nightclub events, restaurants and live shows, in addition to an appearance on a filming of the finale of Cake Wars - we had a full itinerary and were up 5am to midnight with only 2 nights off before the competition. Most of these were not only to have events for public but also promote sponsors, and all of these were put in highlight reels shown in the telecast. It was an absolutely amazing and life changing experience, and the opportunities open even without placing at nationals were endless. I do hope the pageant returns to this, knowing the incredible benefit this level of investment delivers for ALL contestants.
    I am hopeful because there was huge progress forward this year - the level of judges, celebrity partnerships, reverting back to glamour, the quality of competition and the network broadcast. Considering the tumultuous past two years and that Layla Rose took over only 2 months ago and we already saw this level of improvement, I believe we can expect even greater improvements with a full year of planning next year. It is too early to say what type of era this will be.
    P.S. - so glad they ditched the contestant videos for all the finalists - they got too long and boring
    P.P.S. - I hope they bring back the celebrity performs during evening gown!!

    I am SO glad to hear another pageant girl, longtime pageant fan say exactly what I’m too feeling, Dani. For the first time ever I’m thinking about not following this pageant or pageantry anymore. The Miss USA pageant, to me, has lost its luster. I remember back in the day when the stage decor was so beautiful. Everything was dripping in glamour. The contestants used to go to the pageant city and be there 2-3 weeks in advance in preparation and there would be parades and all kinds of fun, exciting events that was used as screen filler while the contestants changed between competition segments. I was almost embarrassed to see what amounted to pre-competition fun for the contestants when you think how long and hard these very accomplished women prepare for this illusion of what once was, for a pageant that used to be a glamorous prelude to Miss Universe, the height of glamour.
    What was missing from tonight’s pageant just stood out. We’ll get to see the full state costumes…thanks to RUclips. There was no on stage music talent. Even as the women competed in both swimsuit and gown, it all went too fast. What happened to a pose at the end of the runway?!? How the judges saw anything is a marvel. I was shocked that there were only 6 judges. What?!? It was…nice enough…if you’d never seen what the Miss USA pageant used to be like. Even as recent as three years ago, there was a contestant dance number. What happened to that? And unless some of these contestants gave lousy preliminary interviews, I’m shocked as to who didn’t make it into the top 20 OR the top 5. It all left me flat. Raising the age limit for this and Miss Universe is the least of the bandaids needed. Miss USA and even aspects of Miss Universe might be beyond help. And if they are THIS hard up for money, maybe it’s time to take these pageants off life support and let them fade into oblivion.
    And when Morgan was doing her final walk, at one time there was no spotlight on her face. It was a little insulting to me. But, whatever, that’s my take. #Anticlimactic

    The bottom line is that Miss USA (and Miss America) lacks sponsors and television revenue, meaning fewer events and simple productions. This is also the reason US pageants nickel and dime people. US pageants rely on pageant fandom and the contestants for their revenue. You can't compare pageant-crazy countries like Thailand and the Philippines with the US. The lack of interest in pageantry is growing in the US.

      But Miss France has done very well throughout the years and still retains its "glitz and glam" and its "dreamy" quality. The fact that Miss France is produced by Endemol, and airs on France's biggest TV network says something about the brand and how the organization keeps the brand marketable until today despite Europe's lack of interest in pageantry. So I don't think it's that lack of interest. Pageantry still is very much part of American culture. Miss USA is simply lagging behind in terms of overall quality and creativity to sell the brand.

    Agree with everything you said, Dani. Miss USA was one of the national pageants I used to be so excited to see together with Señorita Colombia and Miss France. It's been so lackluster lately; it is so sad. I understand times have changed and pageantry is not as looked upon as it used to be 5 or 10 years ago but still doesn't mean the directors should not invest to make the pageant a spectacle for the people watching and for the contestants who dedicate their whole lives to be on that stage. Especially when talking about a pageant as Important and iconic as Miss USA.
    I hate to say it but despite his shortcomings as a person, Trump knew how to do pageants and knew how to give those women and us the time of our lives. Just because the pageant is held in a small city doesn't mean it has to be boring. I think it's necessary that the people who enter the Miss USA and Miss Universe organizations are people who have a genuine passion for the pageants and have respect towards the women participating to give them what they deserve.
    Both pageants are in the hands of people who only want to make money out of them but are bad businessmen/women so they don't actually know how to get some revenue from the organizations. So they start doing and undoing crazy things which just ends up declining the prestige of both competitions.

    I'd like to offer my 2/100th's of a dollar...When I watched Thursday's live feed of the prelims I thought to myself 'well this is really different'. They just got Miss Wyoming off stage in her swimsuit and they were immediately bringing Miss Alabama out in her evening gown. Talk about streamlining the event, those contestants must have had to be quick change artists! Then Friday's finals looked pretty much the same as Thursday's prelims (usually there's some difference in background setting, etc.). There wasn't even a musical guest this year. I thought it was nice but weird that they had Morgan Romano read the Miss USA creed, though she wrongly said it was written about 25 years ago when in fact it was written about 70 years ago. What was really upsetting to me was the organization missed an opportunity to take a moment to pay homage to Bob Barker who hosted the pageant for 20 years. I hope they get it right at the Miss Universe pageant.

I wanted to use my platform to bring more awareness to food insecurity within the country and Texas, poverty, bringing healthy food to families tables as I’ve worked for Texas WIC for the past 7 years and inspiring women to pursue their career and education and that it’s never too late to start something new but even with Miss Universe, I haven’t seen them having Sheynnis participate with any charities or organizations, more so just traveling and enjoying the countries they are visiting

    Dani, all I can say is people nowadays want maximum return on their dollar, but spend minimal to get it.
    It narrows down to consciousness and experience.
    Consciousness because if they are genuinely “in it” to help contestants, then they will be committed to their overall experience.
    Having Experience will enrich them with the knowledge and understanding about pageantry and the importance of gaining media attention & coverage to attract more sponsorship.
    I’m old school and believe “You have to spend money, to make money.”

    Lawd, where was Lu Sierra when you needed her? I have a sneaking suspicion that the Miss USA and by extension Miss Universe Pageants have been running into financial problems, which could very well account for why the quality of the pageant has gone down. The hype is gone, the glitz, the glam, the experience of what we were used to when watching Miss USA has nose-dived so quickly in just a few short years. I'm chalking it up to finance issues, and let's not forget, getting all of those details organized for even one competition to have it all culminate in one night takes an incredible amount of planning and a team that is on top of every single line item. When you go through organizational changes like Miss USA has just done in the last year, even when it happened with Crystle Stewart taking over, it is so overwhelming to try to have your hand in every single facet of how the pageant runs, and especially if you don't have a fully staffed team that is delegated the responsibilities to make sure everything runs seemlessly. There is so much that needs to be said, but my congrats to Miss Utah. It's been 63 years since Utah last won Miss USA, and they also went on to win Miss Universe (in 1960), so we'll see what happens.

    First of all I’m finally ready to “put a crown on it and ask you to be my official pageant wife” I know that you have so many other offers so I’m ok with being your “ARKANSAS” pageant husband. 😂😂😂
    I can honestly say that we typically agree with each other 100%.
    As a LIFELONG pageant fan, and specifically Miss USA fan, I can honestly say that I didn’t know that the pageant was happening until 3 days before 😳😳😳. And I didn’t even know about the change in leadership until the prelims 😳😳😳.
    I felt like this years pageant was very haphazardly thrown together. I am hoping that the somewhat last minute change in leadership attributed to most of our complaints and they will pull it together by next year’s pageant. AND I of course we talk about some of the things that happened in the good ole days of pageantry but I honestly don’t know how profitable those pageants were or if they losing money out the ying yang. At the end of the day it’s going to come down to money 🤷🏿‍♂️.
    EVERY FREAKIN YEAR, there seems to be an issue trying to watch the pageant live, and this year was no exception. I was sooooo excited that the pageant was going to be back on “regular” tv, but apparently The CW network seems to be in dispute with some providers and unfortunately the hotel that I was staying at couldn’t show the channel. I ended up watching it via FaceTime with my pageant bestie in NYC who coincidentally also couldn’t get the channel and ended up signing up for an $80 subscription to Hulu live only to miss the first hour of the pageant.
    The audience was just sad. There is really nothing else to say about that🤷🏿‍♂️.
    I honestly like the format of having a top 20 compete in swim and gown, because I always felt that we really didn’t get enough of the contestants.
    I also actually liked the final 5 answering the same final question, because it really puts everyone on even ground.
    There were SOOOO many beautiful contestants this year, but WTF was up with all the HIDEOUS evening gowns. I saw far too many slits up to their panties 😩😂. Where is the elegance? It honestly looked like a stripper pageant 🤷🏿‍♂️.
    The swim suit wasn’t any better. It looked like a low budget Victoria Secret show 🤷🏿‍♂️😩😳😂.
    AND PLEASE get some high profile hosts back.
    For many more reasons not mentioned here, I’m pretty sure that pageantry as we KNEW it is over. The real pageant fans have been disappointed so many times that many have just moved on to other things 🤷🏿‍♂️. I do however love the Miss France pageant that happens every year around Christmas time.

    Honestly Dani, they should hire the both of us to whip the competition into shape lol.
    I have a full on note on my phone of all of the different things I would have contestants doing if I ran the pageant. The list is growing too! I think they should have the costume contest as a parade in the city of the show! Also having the sash ceremony as a combo with the intro event in public would be a great idea! Even if the pre pageant trip was a trip to the pageant’s eventual location, they could use it as b-roll for the pageant and for tourism! Also what happened to live performers at the show?! The pageant week photo shoot would be a great thing to combine with one of the sponsors like they did in the past and that would create the hype and revenue they need. I missed backstage commentary as well this year. Finally, I think they should have a fan contest where one lucky fan gets chosen to have a trip to the pageant and be a judge during prelims. (Also the judges from prelims should NOT be the same as finals.)
    With all that being said, I have to say, at least this was a step up from last year (a baby step, but a step nonetheless).

    • @googlyotterr
      @googlyotterr 8 месяцев назад

      Also I don’t mind the Top 20, but I think there should’ve been a cut to 12 for evening, cut to 6 for questions, and then a cut to 3 for a final statement. I think it just gives the show more momentum!

    • @DaniWalker
      @DaniWalker  8 месяцев назад +1

      Oh 100% if we had a parade in 2018, why not now? MAO does the show me your shoes parade.
      Oh I love the pre-trip to the venue, because you can shoot sooo much footage there that you'd normally shoot at Miss USA. It'd be such a good promo of the ladies before the pageant. The pageant should definitely be partnered with the local tourism board. I even got invited to a Miami trip with former Universe contestants for a celeb soccer match. It was all sponsored by the Miami tourism board.
      I agree with the shoots. You can get photography sponsors because that's a lot of press for them. Imagine all the work Fadil has gotten for the past decade from titleholders. It's a lot.
      I wanna know where live performers are too.
      Oh a fan trip would be super fun!!! I love that. Idk about judging for prelims though. How about state costume, or they just get a VIP miss USA experience with hotel/food/flight, front row seats for prelims and finals, a meet and greet, then after party tickets?
      I'll add we need some pre-show fashion shows with sponsor or USA merch, available to the public.
      I also want an exhibit of Miss USA memorabilia featured at the venue that people can visit pre-show.

    • @googlyotterr
      @googlyotterr 8 месяцев назад

      @@DaniWalker I LOVE the idea of a Miss USA exhibit at the venue!! You can even do a green screen where there's a replica crown and sash for fans to take their photos with!
      Yeah the pre-trip to the venue seems like such a missed opportunity/oversight. I know that contestants change up their looks sometimes between states and nationals, so you couldn't get all of your b-roll then, but definitely could be a nice video to line up at the beginning of the show.
      I guess I was being a bit selfish at the thought of getting to judge the prelims myself 💀 They should definitely a fan package like you described though! (A prelim panel of judges that are pageant bloggers like yourself could be a really interesting idea!)
      Also I wish they would do a press interview portion like they did for Miss Universe Philippines last year where they got like a few minutes to answer questions directed at them. You could still have individual interviews with judges behind closed doors but the public would also get a glimpse at what they interview like as well.
      I'm curious what your thoughts are on bringing back Miss 52! I don't know why, but I really liked it when they had it in 2016! (Also you could have Miss 52 be chosen from a pool of the runner-ups, not necessarily just first runner-ups because you might need them to fill in case of emergency.)
      I'm also nitpicking, but why are all of the t-shirts they sell blank on the back? It's such a missed opportunity to give each contestant a personalized one with either their state name or outline of their state on the back. You could totally sell those online as a way to support your state's queen and add that into the fan favorite vote!

    • @DaniWalker
      @DaniWalker  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@googlyotterr oh yes and we’d definitely make the exhibit interactive. Like at NYFW, they always have some creative interactive area where you get to take a free picture or video clip.
      I loved miss 52, such a fun nation wide search and wild card but they need to give her more than a weeks notice lol.
      Love the merch idea. They had similar merch in 2016 or 17 but I’m not sure it was state specific. Just year specific.

    • @googlyotterr
      @googlyotterr 8 месяцев назад

      @@DaniWalker Yeah we'd have to give her a little bit longer of time than a week to prepare lol! I think in order to have it work, the state pageant deadlines would have to be moved up a bit or the pageant would have to be held slightly later in the year.
      I have to say that I actually really like September for the pageant! Its close enough to Miss Universe that you can piggyback the hype of your contestant onto their run at Universe, but also there's enough time to correct/prepare the newly crowned Miss USA for her next competition.
      Also, what happened to presenting the awards for congeniality and photogenic onstage? That contestant should get their chance to shine as well if they didn't place in the competition.
      Thank you for all the thoughtful responses btw Dani! I wasn't expecting full on paragraphs, so thank you for taking the time to respond!

    I enjoyed how the pagent opened the last two years with, in one year, each contestant having an intro as the wind blew through the hair, and the dance number in the black attiire last year. This year I found the opening sequence and its attire boring and not flatterng to the contestants. When the show had it bumpers and I saw the contestants in Reno in the black tops and jeans or shorts, I was thinking, "wow, they certainly are attractive," an impression that was muted by the opening number. Then the show had the bathing suit and the accompanying capes. Frankly, I'd rather see them copy Miss Teen USA with the leggings and athletic wear, which enhanced their figures. Then 20 to 5? Finally, commentary was so weak. Did it have any? Your points are great. Can see you gave this a lot of thought and came up with great recommendations!

Obviously MAO lost their contracts when Sam got booted and Dick Clark Productions and ABC stepped away from MAO. The Critic's Choice Awards are the only awards show related to the CW Network.... I've always loved the Top 10 cut of Miss USA and Miss Universe before and while it's a harsh cut it also makes the competition not only stiffer but a more exciting fight among the best of the best in the world. Top 15 - 21 is just too many and not gonna lie,it gets so boring.

    What I do like is that Miss USA is back on TV. Were there some things that were missing yes - but some progress is better than none. I miss hearing "THE FIRST RUNNER UP IS...."

    I personally enjoyed seeing more of the competition in only 2 hours rather than a 3 hour show with a lot of extra stuff thrown in that I don’t watch anyway.
