Grace Under Pressure seems to be growing in popularity, otherwise I would say this was the best of the post-Signals, 'poppier' 80's Rush albums. Overall it's a solid album, despite the glossier production (courtesy of Peter Collins) with lots of 80's synths in the mix. Alex was OK with that sound for a while, but by Presto he'd had enough (as had Geddy.) They lost some hardcore rock fans by this time, but they still sold albums, got songs on the radio, and did well touring. And there was enough of the original nerdy Rush technicality in the music, even if the hard rock/metal thing had fallen away. But I would much prefer they had gone this route instead of the corporate hard rock of bands like Van Halen or Motley Crue.
One of my favorite songs of the entire rush catalog! I was 16 in 1986 when this album was released and saw the tour at the Meadowlands, NJ. Just such a happy, bright song. I've never tired of it and it's just so poppy and buoyant. the synths were designed and formatted by a guy named Andy Richards.
I commented too soon. Neil wrote the majority of the lyrics. The first album the lyrics were by Geddy when John Rutsy was the drummer. The day of the recording for the first album, the drummer didn’t bring the lyrics. So Geddy had to write them on the spot. There’s a few songs here and there that Geddy and Alex wrote lyrics for, but that’s it.
Amazingly this was my first ever Rush album so had no issues with the heavy synths. This is a very polished album and at times very clinical almost too perfect. To me it’s a perfect 80s rush album and along with Grace under pressure one of my favourites. Middletown dreams, marathon and manhattan project are my 3 favourites
They brought in a keyboardist named Andy Richards (I think) and he played and programmed those synth parts in the studio. Geddy and Alex would then trigger those parts on stage live.
But look who's doing the panning. I mean, consider the source. Alex: I think a lot of bands that have become very successful like the taste of that stuff. They don't want to do anything to risk losing that, so they become stale and don't do anything that's new or exciting. We try to do it another way ... And I think it's odd, I hear a lot from our fans or people who know the band who wish that we were back to the days of '2112'. I'm not sure if that's because of the music so much, as maybe where the people were at a certain point in their lives. I remember certain albums, where I was, and I feel very strongly about those records, even though the bands went on and progressed and tried to do many different things. I guess you can't make everybody happy all the time. We really try to make ourselves happy first before we try to make anyone else happy, and I think that's probably the most important ingredient of the band. And the true fans really acknowledge that and understand that. We have to push forward...
@@bookhouseboy280 I'm so glad they did! There's a lot of great music all throughout. Here are my 2 favourite Rush deep cuts : Losing it and Available Light. Those 2 songs are soooo good and unique and are rarely reacted to.... sadly :( You can make this right !!!!!
Power Windows is a great album.
Power Windows is the best album of all time.
Neil always writes about the individual which makes me sad sometimes because so much about politics today is about what group a person should identify with.
LOVE the reaction!! :) Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR?????!!!!!!!!! :) ♥AND, or... Victor Wooten bass magic????????? :) “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
A lot of reaction videos break up the songs during the video. So glad you don’t do that!
Of course bro... I can't stand when they do that either. And I still am getting better at it... less talking during and more after but the way my brain works... it's gone by the time the next measure comes through lol. I appreciate you so much Mike. Thank you for everything
Ah, you got one of those face lights! But, now you need makeup! 🤣
They don't make it like this anymore.
This one of those songs always skipped. I can still feel the pain from the blisters after hitting the ff button on my worn out cassette.
So one of the songs that people don't like and the band didn't like was Tai Shan.
Some Rush fans think that dog years is the worst I disagree I think it's Tai San. Both songs aren't horrid just they're not the best for Rush.
Right, what a lot of people just miss with Dog Years is that it is a light song and contains a lot of bad puns. But underneath it all there's a few lines which can get you to think about what it is like...
The chorus for Virtuality is almost pure cringe to me…
I have to admit that this song is one of my least favourite on this brilliant record. Still amazing but songs like Marathon and Middletown Dreams are masterpieces in every possible way. Power Windows is in my top 5 Rush albums for sure.
One of my least favourite Rush albums. 2nd from the bottom. Hold your fire is right at the bottom. I am with Alex on this time period.
Alex said he's proud of this period and considers Power Windows a top Rush album. He did become frustrated by the decade's end.
I get that. Don’t let them tell you you’re wrong. I might disagree… 😊
