    The Polestar 2 has really got me questioning my next car, between the LR Model 3 and this. Especially in the UK market where they're priced exactly the same.
    It's a toss-up of longer range, a little faster acceleration and Autopilot on the Model 3.
    Or the Polestar 2 with better build quality, more 'creature comforts'; powered hatchback, heated steering wheel, higher towing capacity, matrix headlights, heated wipers, etc. and a better infotainment system.

    • @Tycer

      @@cypvh74 That's going to be the deciding factor for me. While hotly debated, I don't see Elons dream of Full Self Driving coming to the UK until 2025, due to various laws and regulations. And by which time, I'd be likely looking for a newer car, or a cheaper Model 3.

      The Android system seems like a really good idea that just sounds obvious in hindsight. I'm curious to see how Volvo supports their software after you buy the car, which IMO is Tesla's biggest advantage over every other manufacturer. I know it's Android so to an extent you might just get updates provided by Google and app developers, but basically every phone in existence still requires its manufacturers to support Android upgrades and none of those ever stay updated for more than a few years. And it's not like Google is going to be doing any autonomous driving updates for Volvo or anything. I'm not sure I'd give up consistent software updates (many of which add more "creature comforts") just to have Spotify show up on a larger screen, especially when the Model 3/Y already has a large and ergonomic space for your phone/tablet right under the main screen.

    I wasn't so much when they first introduced it at the beginning. I don't know if they changed something or not but now I think it's a good car.
    I absolutely love the info system Android... And it's definitely not like the old cars full of buttons everywhere and I think this is perfect. It feels luxurious and high tech.
    It's definitely the best competitor for Tesla. The charger network is missing though.

      @knowledge share The higher pricing is only true in the US, in Europe and many other places around the world the pricing of the Polestar 2 Launch edition starts under what you need to pay for a Tesla Model 3 Long Range with 19 inch wheels.
      The situation with the slightly lower range and slower charging capability the reality is that most owners won't notice.
      After all the difference is only five minutes for a 10-80 % recharge when both cars are getting the optimal charging situation, a Tesla Supercharger v3 for 22 minutes with the Tesla and a 150 kW CCS charger for 27 minutes with the Polestar 2. If the SuperCharger is a v2 the time difference is more or less the same for charging the same range(620 km vs 650 km each hour) but the larger Tesla 3 LR battery will need two minutes more to get to 80 %.
      It is also worth mentioning that getting a fully charged battery down to 10 % you need to drive at least 250 kilometres on the motorway, or be towing a trailer.
      In other words the Tesla Model 3 Long Range will not have a significant advantage in any of the three issues you bring as a reason to forget the Polestar 2, at least not for European drivers looking for an electric car. In fact there are good reasons to suggest that the Polestar 2 has the advantage. After all it is praised for its superior build quality and material choices, as well as a responsive infotainment system that most users will know how to use without instructions as they already know Android. Also have a look at the reviewers when they review the two cars, and you will have to agree that the Polestar 2 is the one they seem to enjoy the most.

      A lot of polestar owners in Norway are reporting that the range is not nearly as good as advertised. I'm a little disappointed by that, and also by the small headspace and legroom in the rear seat. That's a shame because it looks much better than the TM3, and the LED matrix headlights are sooo nice! Also, heated steering, 1500 kg tow hitch, large rear hatch, nice infotainment system.... Difficult choice!

    • @Jonsson474
      @Jonsson474 4 года назад +2

      Wonderboy75 I hear the same from Tesla 3 owners but I guess most people who get a different range haven’t taken into consideration performance packs etc, that of course lowers the range significantly. Just having the grippier performance tires lowers the range a lot. Then again, Polestar have sold twice as many cars in Norway compared Tesla 3, in august and September. It’s just a nicer car.

    Excellent review and if i was just doing local trips I would be ordering one of these. For most people the range is sufficient and they would be charging at home almost every time. My job still requires about 25,000 miles a year so the ease of the Tesla charger network and the extra range available pushes me towards a model 3. Having done some sample route planning, the Model 3 always has a shorter journey time, either because it doesn't need to charge or because the supercharger is faster. Hopefully we will soon have a vehicle that has the battery and connected tech of the Tesla, combined with the high quality interior design and build of the top European brands. Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. As a start, please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html
      In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
      The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
      For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car.
      In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette.
      Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

      @Aventura2005 4 года назад +1

      @@autogefuehl I do believe it is possible to source it responsibly. I have been in the Oil Industry for 35 years and we had the same problem, people were very against what we were doing and did not care to distingish between correctly designed refineries, correctly sourced crude oil etc. etc. and I strongly believe the same applies to the leather industry. I was your follower, I am not anymore as you continue religiously with that crusade against leather which is very unfortunate, as you are otherwise an excellent reviewer. You could have another site where you did your evangelisation and keep to your review as other reviewers do. Regards.

    Excellent review, as always, Thomas! For me it comes down to a choice between the Long Range AWD (not Performance) Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2. Both have almost identical power and acceleration and Tesla has a bit more range. The Polestar costs a bit more, but I believe that is money well spent for the vastly superior build quality, the more complete and luxury interior, versatility of the power lift back and possibly of a better overall ownership experience. One major difference is the charging network availability where you live. Tesla definitely has the upper hand there, but I have to consider how often I would be charging on long trips verses charging at home.

    It's not "UV" protection. It is infrared protection that would help to keep the interior cooler. UV is a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum that doesn't involve heat.

    About that tunnel in the floor; I watched the Car Pervert review this morning and Jonny Smith said it was there because the batteries were placed there as well as under the back seat in a T configuration, the idea being to allow a lower interior floor for the front occupants.

      I thought it was for the back occupants.

      It's that configuration because it is based on the xc40 platform. They can make up as much whimsical reasons as they like to fluff it up, but all manufacturers have gone with the skateboard style for a reason. This is just making do with the space it's got, it is a lovely car though.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 4 года назад

      It also is safer too - the T-shape battery is protected by the body of the car and more difficult to damage in an accident if you're hit on the side.

    • @Jonsson474
      @Jonsson474 4 года назад +2

      The “transmission tunnel” is there to provide a deeper foot well and more legroom for the real passengers. In other EV’s with all the batteries under the floor, the foot well higher. This in turn forces you sit with your knees higher providing a more uncomfortable seating position. So the transmission tunnel is there to provide better rear passenger comfort.

      I talked to the guys at the polestar showroom in stockholm yesterday. OTA updates will be available for polestar cars produced 2021 and forward. If you are able to, go to a showroom and talk to the polestar team, they do have a lot of interesting opinions and information regarding the future of these. I would even dare to say that this (already superb) car is about 80% done at the moment. Purchase this car in 1-1,5 years and you will have an even more amazing experience with it!

    I don't think having a range over 300 miles is necessary except in high-end GT cars meant for eating up highway miles, who commutes 250 miles each day to work?
    If they can up the power and keep the price competitive with the Model 3 Performance then this becomes a VERY serious competitor for those that want a more unique, attractive, and quality EV.

    In Switzerland, the price starts at 57'900CHF.
    Black is the default color. Other colors will cost you 1000.
    The performance pack seems useless, especially for the price (6000CHF).
    It is only related to brakes and dumpers. So, the is not really faster.
    First deliveries expected at the end of 2020. You need to deposit 1000CHF for reservation.
    Price is in the range with the competition and seems fair (compared to the market). The performance is good. I suppose we all would like a bit more range (because that is never enough :-) )
    And compared to BMW's laughable yesterday's iX3 presentation, with RWD SUV with 286ps, about 500km range but with the price that starts at 77'000CHF!(and you will need to check some options) is much better (even though not the same class).

The other charging systems are more spotty and frequently the parking spaces are used by other (ICE) cars not charging.
