  • Rocket Releasing presents writer-director Celine Sciamma's multiple award-winner TOMBOY, a truly contemporary coming of age story, scheduled to open in New York on November 16 followed by a national roll out. In Ms. Sciamma's ('Water Lilies") second feature, a French family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure (Zoe Heran) and 6-year-old Jeanne (Malonn Levana), moves to a new neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Seberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids and decides to pass herself off as Mikael, a boy like the others but different enough to catch the attention of leader of the pack Lisa (Jeanne Disson) who becomes smitten with him. At home with her parents (Mathieu Demy and Sophie Cattani) and girlie younger sister she is Laure, while hanging out with her new pals and girlfriend, she is Mikael. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self Laure takes advantage of her new identity as if the end of the summer would never reveal her unsettling secret. Celine Sciamma ("Water Lilies") brings a light and charming touch to this tale of childhood gender confusion, which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one's heart and body.

People are saying she's transgender. I do not believe this is true. At the end of the movie she identifies herself as a Laure . She only said she's a boy because the boy's she became friend's with assumed she was a boy. She was the new kid and would do anything to fit in. Even pretend she's a boy.

That's why it's called Tomboy -- because she's a tomboy. She saw the boys playing and knew they wouldn't take her seriously as a girl, so she said she's a boy to fit in. Then she got caught in the lie and had to make the fake penis for swimming. She is a tomboy, not transgender. So tired of the transgender crap being crammed down our throats.

I saw the movie and, in my opinion, she is indeed a tomboy, once she just gets mistaken by a boy and starts to act like one. She doesn' t introduce herself initially as a boy, only after the other kids mistake her for one. As a tomboy myself, if when I was younger somebody mistaked me for a boy, I would probably had gone throught with it, cause it is exciting to keep a secret like that. In her case I think she didn't tell them the truth because she was already starting to be a part of the group and making friends.

You people all got it wrong!! It's not that transgender people from day one have a solid fixed gender identity. Mikeal clearly wanted to be taken as a boy. It takes time and lots of courage for young kids to develop a gender identity that transgresses the identity their parents have decided for them. Mikeal WANTED to be a boy, but he did not have the resources or opportunities until they moved into their new place. Being a former tomboy and present transman I could easily see myself in his experience. It wasn't like that from my cradle I identified as a guy and chose a guy name for myself, etc. There were a lot of back and forth, and many first days for many things....and NO, it has nothing to do with "lets have a secret and if they think I am a boy lets play the part"! ridiculous! Like Mikeal I had to go through a lot of trouble to convince others I was a boy, and not the other way around.

    • @bradensheehy8886
      @bradensheehy8886 8 лет назад +76

I've watched this movie with my class, when I was like 10 years old. And it kind of marked me, as the thing I remember the most is how every kid of my school was making fun of it, saying how strange it is... and how the teachers just literally avoided the subject. It was in 2011, so I guess things weren't the same (I'm french btw) but I remember how different I felt from the others. So now I'm watching this trailer again, and I'm 17 now, and I feel so much better. Now I know I'm not the one who must feel bad for being different. It's okay. But honestly, if there are any parents or teachers or any kind of person who's reading this and plans to/has watched this with kids... Please, take a moment to explain them how normal it is. Because it's marked me for a long time, and I don't want anyone else to feel this kind of pain.

Merci.

Hi, Idk if you still want to discuss the movie, but I'll give my opinion anyways.
Personally, I don't think what their mother did was correct. You can see how much pain Mikael feels when they are pressured to admit their "real" name is Laure. At this point, it wasn't even necessary and I don't see the positive effect that such measures could have. Sure, once they go to school, things might get more complicated, but in my opinion it would be better as a parent to talk to Mikael, and/or the principal maybe. Of course they're just a kid and cannot yet decide what name to go by for the rest of their life, but in the end I think overall it causes more trouble to force Mikael to be called Laure.
      What do you think?

So many people think she’s trans. If you’re one of those people are you unable to understand the entire concept of the movie? As a female that was a huge tomboy in the past I would wear boys clothing, I’d even go round with my shirt off (before puberty) and I was misgendered multiple times, some of the times I didn’t even correct the people that misgendered me and this was because it was such a drag to always explain that I was a girl. Kinda similar to the protagonist in this movie, although what happened to her definitely didn’t happen to me. I used to like all the things that were stereotypically male and thought I was really cool and wanted to impress the boys so that they’d let me hang out with them and I even cut out certain words from my vocabulary because I believed they were girly words. However, throughout that entire time it never came to me that I may be a boy, I was completely sure of my gender and even felt discomfort when people called me a boy. You CAN be a girl and be extremely tomboyish and not be transgender, it CAN be a phase. People that are assuming that she’s trans are just brainwashed with the idea that just because someone acts like the opposite sex to them it means that they’re trans. Kinda sad really considering I watched this movie years ago in class and no one thought for a second that she was trans but now the world is just so gender orientated that gender is always an issue.

Anonymous to me thats not my definition of trans .Someone who doesnt confine to gender roles isnt trans. Trans people have gender dysphoria when they feel they are in the wrong body, such as myself .I was never a tomboy growing up,but when I developed breasts I hated my body so much. I stoppes wearing dresses so they wouldnt show and now i use folded spkrts bras to flatten my chest. I wouldnt call the kid in the movie trans because she didnt seem to have any discomfort or anything with herself. She was just calling herself Mikael because she wanted to be accepted

Guys! I watched the movie before and believe me SHE is not a transgender. Everyone just mistook her for a boy, and she was confused, the first part of the movie (in my perspective) She was dressed as a girl. But she had a new haircut that everyone could easily mistake her as a boy. When she introduced herself she didnt say her gender, only her name. The other kids started to play with her and get close with her, so she got confused and thought that if she was a boy they would accept her.

No , Lisa asked to Laure in french :" Es tu NOUVEAU ? ". That means : "Are you new(new boy)?" In french we said "nouveau" for a boy and "nouvelle" for a girl. Lisa started to identify Laure as a male and did a mistake. Thus, when she asked to Laure what was her name, she answered "Mikael" because, she was confused.

I can tell that all the people saying the title is wrong and saying he is a transgender did not actually watch this film. The woman who directed this has made two other films that explore gender and sexual fluidity. When I was a kid, I was a tomboy, and I remember for a moment that I thought I was about because all the kids at school would say I was one. When your a kid, your unsure of who you are. Mikeal didn't start doing things like making a fake penis until she came in contact with the boys. He even felt confused when he was kissed by a girl. This movie is suppose to look into the difference between being a tomboy and being a transgender. Mikeal isn't a TOMBOY, but it's still open to other interpretations.

What do you mean "this movie is supposed to look into the difference between being a tomboy and and being a transgender"??
Not just tomboy, but all genders are made through interactions with other people since gender is about identity, and identities, by definition, are made in a social contexts. There are much misunderstandings about gender in general and trans-gendered people in particular. Despite many lazy "scientific" claims, transgendered people were NOT born transgender, neither were cisgendered people (i.e. female bodied people who see themselves as women and male bodied people who see themselves as men) born with their "correct" gender identities. Mikeal is a tomboy and at this stage of his life he's also a young transgender boy. He may grow up later in his life to identify as a woman, or he may continue identifying as a boy/man.

I mean everyone around had their fav fairy tale and I loved this film being like 7 years old. Now I'm a closeted transgender. I rewtched the film and felt it differently. The ending somehow broke me tho. It's like saying there's no ecape from being a girl, it had to confuse me when I was younger.

  • @zambranaml

The topic is the desire for social acceptance, even while living under a false impression, and NOT transgender issues. Children want to be accepted by their peers and as Laure, she would have found herself having fewer interactions with the neighborhood kids than she did as Mikael. Being Mikael allowed her the luxury of not being told what she could and could not do. I wasn't so much of a tomboy as a child, nor am I homosexual or transgender now, but as a pre-teen, I WAS mistaken for a boy on numerous occasions based on my looks. And there were times that I rode with that, not correcting anyone, just so that I could go about my day playing and having fun and not being pigeonholed into the "girls don't play baseball, you play softball" stereotypes. "Girls don't do this, girls don't do that, you can't play with us" type of thing. I got sick of it. There was no reason that just because I happened to be a girl that I had to be excluded.

In my opinion Laure is a girl who likes playing with boys, dressed kinda like them because she had more afinity with them, shes like part of that type of band (like a bunch of girl in the world). Actually when she met Lisa who speaks first and call him the "new one" (in french it is "le nouveau" which is masculine and different from "la nouvelle" which is feminin), she was identify as a boy since the beginning and i saw her response as "my name's Michael" as a exciting game, like if she was saying "thats funny, lets pretend i'm a boy cause its working and i like it" then the game became more real and the secret took big proportions to keep it. Its was an humiliation for her that everyone discovered her secret more because she was saw as a liar and as a cheater more than being discover as a girl. In my opinion the ending with "my name is Laure" and her cute smile signify that they start again, with no more lies or game only the truth. It was a one time experience, now she IS a girl eventhough she keeps that masculine appearance which is part of her

Can we please not invalidate Mikael's decision to identify as male by saying that he was "confused because everyone mistook him as a boy" and just decided to "go along with it"? Mikael made a very conscious decision, and was exploring his gender identity. I think if Mikael was older in the film (like maybe a teenager) and was doing the same thing, everyone would agree he is trans, but because he is so young people are discrediting his actions. Kids have a better grasp of gender than adults given them credit for. Just like gay men and women might have an understanding at a very young age that they are attracted to the same sex (years before they even decide to come out), the same applies to trans folk.
Also, in terms of the title, yes it is a bit misleading, but i think it was more of a tongue-in-cheek decision. It feels kinda of like a jab at cisgendered individuals for erasing the gender identity of young trans kids by saying something as invalidating as "oh, she's just as tomboy. it's a phase." In reality some kids who are labeled "tomboy" might one day identify as trans but never felt they could as a child because of their parents imposing a label onto them. Also also, I think the title "Tomboy" is an attempt to make the subject matter of the film a bit more "palatable" for audience members who might be ignorant/disapproving of trans folk.

I was a tomboy nearly my whole childhood and occasionally I still enjoy it. I'd always connected better with boys on a playground. You just started playing sports or whatever. It's easier really. And girls can be quite b**chy, by the way. So I totally understand why Laure had gone with it. I can see myself doing the same in her position, if I had a courage to pretend. Why should she be transgender just because of this? Like I said....everyone nowdays likes to search for labels and for difficult reasons. But things can have simple explanations sometimes :-)

although their gender is not specifically stated in the movie, it is clear that their parents were absolutely wrong my enforcing their idea of the kids gender on them and purposefully putting them out their practically asking for their child to be bullied.
they dont need to make any permanent disicions about the kids gender or put a label on it, but if they clearly want to present as a boy at this moment, they shouldnt be forcing them to present as a girl. And maybe they're just a cis girl going through a phase, or a cis girl, or a trans boy, or a genderqueer kid or anything else, but just because they dont know, doesnt mean their parents get to choose for them. homophobic

When people thought I was a boy I went along with it and sometimes it even turned into a game to see how long I could keep it up. I'm a tomboy to but I'm keeping it a secret because all my cousins, aunt and uncle assumed that I'm a girl but secretly I'm a tomboy, one day one of my twin cousin was getting a haircut the other girl was beautiful and the other was just like me with bangs
and shaggy hairstyle after that in the past weeks one of them
    secretly confess to me with
    "ate" that what they call
    are you a tomboy???
    and I said yes but
and then she said "please keep this a secret between you and me
I'm a tomboy but I can't tell everyone because they think I would disappointed them and I hope you are not disappoint at me." "I wasn't disappoint at you, you're telling me the truth and I'm telling the truth to but just keep this a secret okay."
and that day on we keep talking and talking,i didn't even know one of them was a tomboy and I thought I was the only one but secretly we are 2 tomboy.
    also please don't judge me
I know I'm a tomboy I've been suffering depression and anxiety
I know other girls are suffering too
the reason why I'm a tomboy it's because of the boy " there was a day I confess to my crush but them he suddenly laugh at me and
rejected at me but doesn't mean we are couple I'm just telling him
he keep laughing at me and then I felt embarrassed so the only thing
I did was cover my self wear a hoodie everyday at school I mean everywhere and he was "hey why are wearing hoodie everyday"
and "I said it's non of your business" he was shock hearing me said that word but then he let me go anyways he stopped and the other they just let me go and my life started a new day and then
I realise something like "maybe I should get the hang of this" so I start with hoodie and then rubber shoes, clothes and then my hair it's still short but Im using gel after that the last thing I used is mask
and then I realise I'm doing some boys stuff and I was kinda happy to do it but when I asked my dad what if I'm a tomboy he said
I would never have a kid who is tomboy so now and forever im keeping it secret.

I think it's heartbreaking that in these times as soon as a boy has feminine gestures or a girl is musculine, she is somehow forced to "accept" that he/she is gay/transgender. There was a time a little girl could be a tomboy and grow to be so feminine it would shock others,now?...like no one ever heard of a feminine guy being in love with a girl.

I agree with majority of your comment but I dislike the fact you assumed that tomboys will blossom into feminine girls.
I mean.....I still despise makeup and forever will...and when I'm in my womanhood I'll still play with cars and play videogames .-.
But I agree with society not accepting feminine straight guys..thats just wrong that they dont

@@pleaselovemeok5906 I read the comment as
"Could be a tomboy and grow to be so feminine"
I assumed that if they meant that tomboys don't grow into feminine ladies all the time then maybe they should say "Could be a tomboy and might grow out to be so feminine it would shock others"

I don't think you actually know any transgender people or parents, because this is not how it works Aisha. I think you might have it backwards. Gender enforcement is overwhelmingly a product of straight cis culture, the transgender and even straight-cis woke parents I know enable their children to be themselves instead of forcing them to conform to others expectations of their genitals influence on their identity.

I wanted to be a boy growing up but the only reason for that is because I can’t dress up as a boy or play with boys toys if I’m not a boy.

I had a friend who was a total tomboy growing up. She didn’t look like a boy cuz her face was too feminine and her hair was a bob, but her clothes and mannerisms and interests were super tomboyish. She did slowly outgrow it though once puberty hit and she got interested in boys.
