Old videos like this bring back fantastic memories but they also make me think . . . one moment I'm partying to 'Whitesnake' and the next moment . . . a third of my life has evaporated!
cozy powell,s drum solo was the high light of that day,it had helecopters flying above, sweeping low and all to the tune of the dambusters music, rip all former members not with us
Excellent. I was at that gig, took 2 days to walk there , but I thought it was Berne Marsdon on Git. Saw him recently still looks the same minus boiler suit.
I saw all the early MoR gigs. I didn't know this had been filmed. They had helicopters come over as part of their show - shining lights down on to the crowd. I spent a good portion of this set smacked out in the medical tent. It would be good to get the video and see just what it was I was listening to. I remember the gig programme had pictures of Whitesnake dressed in army fatigues. They looked very corny. That was the 80's though.
The 83 line up was Whitesnake headlining, Twisted Sister, Meatloaf, Motorhead, Diamond Head and few others. ZZ Top was not there. I was stationed at Ramstien AB. It was pretty damn close to the Kaiserslautern area.
MoR in Kaiserslautern has been the first Open-Air-Festival I´ve been to: Twisted Sister (bad Sound), Motörhead (still bad sound but with a funny Lemmy: "zeigen Brust"), Meat Loaf - I didn´t know that dying on stage was part of the show, then a long pause with some brawl between german Rockers and GI´s on one rostrum because Ozzy Osbourne didn´t appear, Saxon played a perfect set during a strong rain period, Blue Oyster Cult has been celebrated too because germans love twenty minute versions of "Born to be wild", then again a very long pause because Thin Lizzy came too late to the stadium, but at the end they played a short, super fast best of repertoire that made the audience freak out. Too bad that one day later Phil Lynott played his last show ever with his band in Nürnberg. Well, and then it got dark and Whitesnake performed this long and wonderful Headliner Show. All in all: Saxon, Thin Lizzy and David Coverdale saved the day, at least for me... :)
Hey, thank god for that, I thought I had taken some bad shit that day! The helicopters came over when Cozy did his 1812 Overture drum solo, 4 of them, hovvered over the PA , (Donnie' has 4 PA stacks/towers), and flashed their lights in sync' to the sound being switched from one stack to another! for years I really thought I had dreamt that bit!!!!
Yes August 1983. Not long after this Mick Moody left to be replaced by John Sykes and Colin Hodgkinsin would be replaced by original bass player Neil Murray.
Something is definitely wrong here with the speed - I know bands tend to play a bit faster live sometimes but this is a bit nuts. Having watched Cozy Powell with Rainbow, Sabbath, Brian May and others, you won't find another gig out there where he chses himself to the end like this
@statusquo4life Hey mate, don't you know that rock music doesn't happen outside of the good ol' US of A? ? :o) I was at one of the Doningtons (might have been this one actually) we bumped in to a bunch of yank aircrew (they serviced Phantoms in East Anglia somewhere, I think it was...). We mixed Jack Daniels with some really strong cider in a fuel can...we called it the 'Donington Asskicker'...happy days :o)
Wow, so this was a Mickey Moody written song, recycled on the Vai album that came after Sykes was kicked out. Just when I thought I couldn't have any less respect for Coverdale.
Way too fast - the bass player can hardly keep up... Too much speed - hehehe. Great song tho. Love the little video effect at the end when he's holding the mike stand ;-)
@OnTheLibraryComputer Of course, after all they wrote this song and many others. But with this line up Whitesnake would never achieve the rock stardom they had a few years later. The guitarists are good, they have taste and all, but they look like the guys who fix my car at the gas station and play like a bar band.
Colin Bomber Hodgkinson was a tremendous jazz bass player, a monster, but he doesn't fit well in Whitesnake. This song doesn't sound good without Neil Murray and his incredible softly touch.
Sorry to tell you the truth, pal. The real Whitesnake, the one that became world wide famous and sold gazillion albuns IS the 1987 one. Besides, I dont' think you know anything of music, do you? Your are judging the band by their hair? What the fuck is this? Sykes can play circles around those derivative pentatonic blues players.
I do Agree that this is the worst version of this song i have ever heard and i have heard them all.Nevertheless the concert in general was a+++.The best from that era or maybe any era/lineup.
Whitesnake have been dedicating "Love Ain't no Stranger" (he wreote it) to Mel every night on this tour (even before he passed away). RIP Mel.
I was there and fortunately lived down the road in Clifton and remember the traffic jam trying to get out on the CX 500. Memories are a good thing.
At the time, I had never heard of Whitesnake until I saw them at this show. Fan ever since! Thanks for posting!
Wow !!!! Hard rock - blues at maximum level !!
The faster the better! Awesome version...
What a line up!!!!! 3 of the Greatest musicians in time!! Wow!
RIP Jon Lord, Mel Galley and Cozy Powell.
R.I.P. Mel Galley

best classic rock song ever!
Best concert ever

whitesnake = rock genius!
The 83 line up was Whitesnake headlining, Twisted Sister, Meatloaf, Motorhead, Diamond Head and few others. ZZ Top was not there. I was stationed at Ramstien AB. It was pretty damn close to the Kaiserslautern area.
The lineup was Diamond Head, Dio, Twisted Sister, ZZ Top, Meat Loaf and Whitesnake

David was awesome there!

Amo, Amo, Amo e Amo!!!!
it,s on live.... in the heart of the city as well.
I loved early Whitesnake, but you're right GuitarMartin, the groove is lost when they speed the songs up.
THE BEST
I think this show was at Nuremberg W. Germany in September. I was in the Army at went with 1/2 my platoon.
You are correct sir.
I was there too Co C 3/64 Armor Rock on
Yes R.I.P. for the man. I would really have hoped that the band paid some memorial to him when they played in Athens the other day.
The CLASSIC lineup of Whitesnake. 'Shame he can't sing any more....
think it was mel gally on lead.
Hey, I was there!
john lord!!!!!!!!!!!! \\m//
Ich war DABEI :-) YEAH !
Same here, JOIN THE CLUB!

@Mjollnir1990 I don't know why people gave you thumbs down. It's true guys, Cozy Powell ruined the old songs because he played everything too fast!
My dad was there :)
Same
Coverdale owns Robert Plant. Hands down
Wow, so this was a Mickey Moody written song, recycled on the Vai album that came after Sykes was kicked out. Just when I thought I couldn't have any less respect for Coverdale.
my dad was there
its monsters of rock 1983... i have the vhs
Do you have a video of meat loaf from the Monster's of Rock Festival 1983
fuckin legends :D
ERE'S A SONG FOR YA!!!!!!!
Is this Saints and Sinners or Slide it In tour? The line up is the second one.
Please... What's the name of the song in the end of this video ?
Isn't Colin already playing on this one?
saw them last year, great band :D
but i would swear it is Robert Plant fronting the band, and not mr. Coverdale! Hahaha
Best version of this song. "Meaner" and ballsy than the Vai version, thats more fizzy sleaze pop.
@rascal1410 and Coverdale??
@tonyrome67 "coverdale's singing is also awful here"
are we listening to the same concert I wonder?
man they must have a tight schedule, had to play fast so they could reach the end credits i guess... :p
Where were you stationed at? I was in Furth, which is outside Nuremberg.
Way too fast - the bass player can hardly keep up... Too much speed - hehehe. Great song tho. Love the little video effect at the end when he's holding the mike stand ;-)
i think that it is faster than normal
i wonder why carlos santana was playing for whitesnake? seems an odd combination, but i notice he didn't play lead in this song
this is great, but i perfer the new version from live in the still of the night dvd :)
i saw whitesnake 2x live, and they were fucking amazing !
is there a DVD with the whole show?
castle donnington. ENGLAND.
are you fucking kidding me with this version?
@theyankeeswin714 well obviously not, its monsters of rock at DONNINGTON PARK in ENGLAMD read the title please
@OnTheLibraryComputer Of course, after all they wrote this song and many others. But with this line up Whitesnake would never achieve the rock stardom they had a few years later. Yes man but Whitesnake is from England, not from USA ;)
Here's a song for ya!
Mel Galley's guitar playing sounds like ACE FREHLEY.
why would they let the drummer speed up the tempo on an established hit?
They were all on speed ahhaha
Mel looks like he should be playing with Jimmy Buffet
myspace/neilmurraybass
Colin Bomber Hodgkinson was a tremendous jazz bass player, a monster, but he doesn't fit well in Whitesnake. This song doesn't sound good without Neil Murray and his incredible softly touch.
Please remove those comments which say if you don't do something you will die, they are so silly!!!

What ridiculous hippie guitarists... Long live to Sykes/Vandenberg era - not this crappy "the 70's show" bar band.
I love John Sykes and Adrian Vandenberg the best !. I grew up with the 1987-1990 era of Whitesnake !.
like your girlfriend told you......sometimes fastest isnt the best
I do Agree that this is the worst version of this song i have ever heard and i have heard them all.Nevertheless the concert in general was a+++.The best from that era or maybe any era/lineup.
too fast, WTF
Steve Vai ???? - You know nothing ...
Coverdale, a very bad singing......he sings so at each live...?? i have seen this 2 years before and he was too bad too... :D
Hair out, balls out, rock. RAWK. I tell you RAWK. I LOVE IT.
