- Please tell me in the comments what pickups you think I've got in here. ALSO: What are YOUR favorite Strat pickups? Please list details of your Strat (body/neck wood, etc) in your comment as well.
I'm running this alder body Original Senn Fullerton with a rosewood slab neck, vintage style frets, and a Suhr backplate system. A slab neck is when a thicker piece rosewood is planed flat on the back and joined to a flat surface on the front of the maple neck. You can see this clearly in the video. Fender did this '59-'62-ish, I believe, before they started laminating a thinner piece of rosewood over the curved maple neck. With a lam neck, the maple neck is radiused, and the rosewood is laminated to it. You can tell lam boards by the way the rosewood follows the fretboard radius at the nut. ANYWAY...
I REALLY like these pickups, especially for session work. They just sound "bigger" to me without being dark or losing too much classic Stratocaster character.. The neck is nice and throaty and articulate. The bridge is bright and jangly but lacks any and all ice pick. The middle pickup is fat and barks. If I had to mention a downside, it would be that they don't quite do the quack in positions 2 and 4 as well as traditionally low-output Strat pickups. (That should be a pretty good hint as to what I'm running.) ANY GUESSES? Anyway, here I am using this on a session at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, TN. The signal chain for this slide part:
• Original Senn Fullerton
• Morgan Shadow Fuzz
• Xotic RC Booster
• Eventide H9 (spring reverb patch)
• Lazy J 20 5E3 tweed deluxe
My volume knob is rolled back a bit to clean up the fuzz. I really like how fuzzes that clean up well can have that clean sound, but it sounds wider and fatter than when the fuzz is off.
The reveal is tonight. 🤠
Where can I find the reveal? This is the sound I've been looking for!
@@abranvigil4904 it’s the very next video in my feed. Search my name and strat pickups reveal.
I had a set of Klein Epic 62's and they sounded phenomenal. Klein knows what he's doing.
Not sure what pickups but your slide playing sounds GREAT! 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks dude!
That really sounds great !
Maybe a Texas Special style? I have no idea really, but they do sound great. I'm glad you mentioned the Suhr system- I've wondered how well they work.
I've got a '91 Japanese 60's Strat that I bought in 1996. It's still the guitar that feels the most like home to me.
The Suhr is great. It doesn’t cancel all the hum like a stacked single coil, but it does reduce quite a bit while leaving your classic tone in tact. The trick, though, is that you have to have a non-reverse wrap non-reverse polarity (non-RWRP) middle pickup.
They sound like Lollars to me. Man does playing slide like that just come to you in the moment? Great content as always.
They wanted kind of a slide feature on this track, so I’m mostly just playing around the vocal. Thanks a ton!
Those sound like the Harmonic Design VPlus, but I could go Lollar or Fralin also.
Those are Artec Giavanni pups - didn’t break the bank and sound nice and quiet with just a little hair on the dog . 😁
just a little late 🤪
I would of said Lace but no.
They sound quite a bit like my Fender CS “Fat 60s” to me 🤷♂️
Fender Texas Specials is my guess. Question - it looks like you are in open G, can you confirm? Related - what tunings do you like for slide, there are lots of choices and I'm curious. Thanks Justin, very enlightening to see a pro at work!
I think I’m in double drop D here. DADGBD. I can get a major triad up top and a power chord down low with a flat bar.
Have no idea on your pickups, my favourite strat pickups are the middle and front factory pickups on my 1980s st3 Bc rich which has a 5 peace maple neck with ebony board and 73sg bridge humbucker. I also have another custom strat with duesenberg pickups, again ebony board. That’s what I use for slide
That’s awesome. And quite unexpected. I haven’t played too many BC Rich guitars. Thanks for watching!
Suhr ML’s !
I’m gonna stab at some og 60s fenders pickups.. or a CS version.
I’ve swapped out the pups in my 60s relic multiple times and always come back to the originals they just have some sort of mojo that the others lack for me..
As an interesting twist… I have a lefty Jason Smith Masterbuild Yngwie spec strat, with the Seymour fury pickups etc.. which isn’t at all a “rock” machine but a genuinely amazing sounding classic strat, and always seems to track well and gets the “yeah that’s the one!” If I plug it in on a session.
Rocket fire 60s
Ron ellis pick ups?
I have no idea, just please let us know as this is exactly what I’m looking for! Loving the channel BTW.
Will do. Thanks!
So a year later and I'm wondering what the pickups were?
The very next video is all about them. The title is Strat pickups reveal or something like that. They’re lollar specials if you can’t find it.
@@JustinOstrander Thank you!

Tonight. I’ll update the title of the video and my pinned comment.
