Fantastic interview and fascinating stories. My favorite part though was when she said “you stand for your values because you stand for your values. Not necessarily because there will be a happy ending after.”
Very interesting and intelligent woman. All of us are just human no matter social title/label, status, culture, beliefs etc. We share ~99% dna. Let’s use that to feed compassion, cooperation and acceptance vs competition and division.
"A bow is just a polite thing" but "I can't bow because he wears a cross". Lol, the logic of being extremely religious. But the pope bowed because he didn't care about the other person's religion.
There’s been a lot of atrocities done to the Jewish people with the cross as a logo; so yeah, it’s not shocking why she’d feel a type of way about bowing down to anything or anyone with that image.
We don't bow to the cross ever, we only bow to God, even if death is the only alternative we wud choose death. Sorry if this is hard for u to understand.
Tov. Can we all just be Jews? instead of "chareidi" or "orthodox", there are some in Klal Yisroel who follow the Torah as given in Sinai. This has been my thinking for years, but someone in the public sphere pointed out that as long as we allow those labels to continue we are partly responsible for the distortions made against us.
She is an amazing women. A bit humerous that she's an English teacher but her English isnt 100%. @Langer, it's always sad to hear a fellow Jew refer to USA as me,mine,we.
"A bow is just a polite thing" but "I can't bow because he wears a cross". Interesting's, but she would bow for the president, or Muslim leader? Seems this woman carries a lot of biased hate
The title is arrogant. She is not special because the pope bowed down to her. Other religions deserve to be respected as well. Elevating yourself above others is arrogant and shows a pettiness that is not to be admired. In his one act, the pope showed his own greatness through his own humility. Some people are making it seem like she is so great because she followed her own religion. This is something that millions of people do each day. She was in a safe environment where she was not going to be judged, so I do not see the bravery in that.
Not arrogant at all. Jewish law forbids bowing like that to a cross. Shaking hands there is a spectrum of opinions. She chooses the stricter approach. She had a dilemma & followed her conscience. What was so safe there? Mordechai didn't bow to Haman in the Book of Esther, back in the day.
The cross is an icon of the Christian god/god's son and, therefore, an idol to which Judaism and other Abrahamic religions, bar Christianity, do not bow. So she was not being arrogant.

Nice interview!
Imo Rivka actually looks a little like Gal Gadot.

100% I don't see anything inspiring about this story. Just foolish..
She could have “bowed” with her hand.

In many small towns in the United States, there is only a Reform Temple filled with people who are not Jewish according to halacha.

For Haredim in Israel her English is more than good enough
Her English is perfect for teaching children.
Out of curiosity: why not 100% and why only for children?

Are you showing respect to others by returning the bow? Or is your standing up to your so called values does not include simple decency and respect???
