both my parents worked in Lancaster moor hospital. and I remember going in, on a few occasions as a child being terrified to death of not only the spooky looking building, but the residents that were unfortunately incarcerated there..

It’s worth remembering that the Moor treated thousands of I’ll folk, and was a real therapeutic community; that’s why I don’t care for the term ‘Lunatic’ which is a term dating from the 18th century. I nursed there from 1981 to 1983, and I discovered many compassionate and caring folk, I also learned that, when opened in 1816, many outrageously progressive ideas, such as occupational therapy, and freeing people from being chained onto benches were tried. The Moor was a beacon of progress. Thankyou

if im right, back in the day people were placed there from no fault of there own.

In most cases if not all def ender it was never their fault. But I know what you are saying. 😊 The Gov closed the hospitals back then and today build bigger prisons. If you have a mental illness and live in australia you are likely to find the hospital security will turn you away. Just another case of putting profit before people. A very sad world indeed!

Society little secret out of mind out of sight you're wondering who I am I am one of the forgotten few in the mental asylums 20 years I didn't commit any fault no crime just for being mad not normal what is normal I'm sorry to say this your society locked me up 20 years and finally they told me I wasn't mad no compensation non apology

I live about 12 miles away from this building it was designed to house 7000 people, just this bit alone theres ridge lea behind that's not even qauter of the size then there was a bit the other side of the road that's already been developed and it was twice the size of this bit. It was known as the largest hospital in Lancashire. It served all of south Cumbria and North Lancashire. It's gothic apearence with its lord of the rings looking tower and Ashton manorial are the landmarks of the back way into Lancaster

What I find awful is the continued use of the term "lunatic" even in 2016.
