    This video is a great example of the psychological/tactical battle between batter and bowler in cricket. How both are trying to constantly guess what the other is going to do, try to force the other to do what they want them to do and adjusting to try and get the upper hand. In limited overs cricket bowling is more about variation, which is what rashid Kahn is so good at, but test cricket is more about bowling consistently, limiting the runs the batters can take while more occasional variation to keep the batter guessing or try to get them out.

    This is what we call 'setting up the batsman' where you make a batsman play a ball moving swinging/spinning in one direction for consecutive balls (pitches) and then throw a one swinging/spinning the other way. The fun part is even batsman expecting that variation ball but he has to guess when you'll throw that.

    The guy doing the voice did get "leg spin" and "off spin" the wrong way round. As you look from the bowler's end, off spin is when the ball spins from left to right.
    Also, having watched a fair few 'cricket explained for baseball fans' (yet to find any the other way around) there is a very common mistake, and that is to reference the bowler "throwing" the ball. Throwing is not legal. The elbow must remain straight throughout the delivery. The wrist can flex and twist, but the elbow can't flex or straighten.

      I would never attempt to name the best bowler of all time. It is a subjective view unless you just base it on stats, which has also foes mot give the full picture.
      In earlier times SF Barnes was viewed as the greatest bowler whilst the legspinner Clarrie Grimmett, first man to 200 test wickets was regarded by some as more vital to the Australian test team than Don Bradman. Don Bradman, himself, thought the best bowler he faced was Bill O'Reilly.

      Warne had McGrath at the other end and an all time great team to play in.
      Murali played a lot against weaker opposition like Bangladesh. I'll always remember him taking 16 out of 20 wickets at The Oval, London. Yes, the pitch suited him, but only him.
      They were both all-time greats, we were lucky to see them.

    Cricket bowlers don't "throw" or "pitch", which involves straightening the arm as you release the ball. They "bowl" which requires the arm to be completely straight before the ball is released. Throwing allows the pitcher to propel the ball much faster than you can "bowl" it from a standing start, which is why certain types of bowlers ("seamers" as opposed to "spinners") require a run up to provide the pace to bowl fast.

    @markthomas2577 6 месяцев назад +24

    Yeah, good video but I think the guy had the leg spinner and the wrong 'un or googly the wrong way round.. With a right handed leg spin bowler the ball that jags to the left is leg spin. In cricket the fact that the ball can bounce off the ground opens up a whole world of different bowling styles as bowlers can use spinning the ball different ways to make it jag right or left. .... plus they can land it (or pitch it) at different places on the ground relative to the batsman to further confuse him. And that the art of slow or spin bowling. Then you have the while different world of fast bowling

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 5 месяцев назад

      *Plus*
      For spin bowling, one bowler might bowl at between 55mph & 65mph, while a different bowler is more comfortable bowling between 45mph & 55mph.
      These differences mean that if you are playing for a faster ball (65mph or 55mph respectively) and the bowler has delivered a slower ball (55 or 45) you are through your shot, while the ball still has about 3 1/2 yards to travel... And if you're switching from the slower ball of the slower bowler to the faster ball of the faster bowler, the ball reaches you about 6 yards earlier (1/4 of the cricket pitch) than you expect.
      Then you compare those speeds with the fast (seam or swing) bowlers bowling at nearly 95mph and your reaction times have to vary depending on who is bowling. *_(And I'm not even considering those, thankfully rare, bowlers that can regularly manage 99mph+: Shoaib, Tait, Lee, Thompson, Larwood etc._** Less than 45 thousandths of a second from release to the ball hitting your bat. IN THAT TIME, YOU HAVE TO DETERMINE THE BALL'S PITCHING LENGTH, ITS LINE, WHETHER YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY, OR LEAVE, THE TYPE OF SHOT TO PLAY **_[Defend/Attack]_** or the type of leave **_[keep the bat away from the ball/DUCK]_** AND ALSO BE DOING IT!)*

    Other factors with spin bowling are drift and drop. Often the ball will drift in the air in one direction and spin the other way. A great example is the first ball Shane Warne bowled in England in 1993. Warne was a leg-spinner and the ball drifted into Mike Gatting, a top-class English batter, then landed and spun viciously away taking the top of off stump. It was called The Ball of the Century and was in the very early stages of a great career. Warne also bowled a flipper, which spins from under the hand, and on landing, seems to go straight, low and faster, He humiliated South African batter, Daryl Cullinan, many times. And also drop...the bowler will apply top spin to the ball, the batter thinks it's going to come to him very full and prepares to play his shot accordingly...the ball then drops in the air and he often will loft the shot and be caught. The climate, and more importantly, the prevailing weather, also has a huge effect. Australia and South Africa are warmer, and therefore the turf wickets are harder and leg-spinners are more effective than in England or New Zealand where it's wetter. In the sub-continent (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh), pitches tend to crumble more and spin accordingly. Pakistan not so much.

    To the right handed batsman, if the ball spins from off side to the leg side (left to right from bawlers vantage point) its called off spin, if the ball spins from leg side to the off side (right to left) its called leg spin.

  • @michaelwebster8389
    @michaelwebster8389 6 месяцев назад +5

    Actually, left to right is off spin. Leg spin is right to left. The offhand side is the side of the pitch in front of the batsman, and the leg hand side is the side of the pitch behind the legs of the batsman.
    Leg spin spins from the leg side towards the off side, so moves away from the batsman, and offspin spins from the off to the leg side, so in towards the batsman. So offspin moves left to right on the pitch, and leg from right to left.

    • @Jivvi
      @Jivvi 4 месяца назад

      Leg spin spins from the leg side towards the off side of a batsman _with the same handedness as the bowler._ If a right-handed bowler is bowling leg spin to a left-handed batsman, it will spin from the batsman's off side to their leg side, but that doesn't make it off spin; it's still leg spin.

    • @michaelwebster8389
      @michaelwebster8389 4 месяца назад

      @@Jivvi that's what makes it confusing. Yes, I believe it's defined in terms of a right hand batsman but then generalised. I think an offspinner bowling to a left hander would still be called an offspinner, regardless of what handedness the bowler had.
      So it's my understanding that the identification of the type of spin is just whether it spins right to left, or left to right, ie. leg to off or off to leg according to a right hand batsman.
      Could be wrong about that though.

  • @davidrichardson9839

    Another aspect of the psychological warfare between teams is how the side that's fielding places the fielders. At the top of the batting order are the best batsmen (or women), so the fielders will mostly be more spread out, to stop balls that hit true and far. As the top batsmen are dismissed, the lower order batsmen are usually bowlers or the wicket keepers. The fielders will then be brought in close the batsman, partly to try to psych him out and partly to catch balls that aren't hit true, but spin off the edge of the bat. The positions for the fielders have particular names too. 'Silly mid on' and 'silly mid off' are positions that are very close to the batsman, about halfway down the wicket. They're called 'silly' because those are the positions most likely to end up with a hard cricket ball in a delicate part of the body! Sometimes you need to switch the whole fielding team around to different positions, if, say, you have a left-handed batsman at one end and a right-handed batsman at the other.
    The batsman asking for the sight screen to adjusted (that's the large screen designed to make it easier for the batsman to see the ball, particularly if the light is fading) reminded me of a story about when Yorkshire played Kent back when a ferocious fast bowler called Fred Trueman was on the team. The Kent batsman kept asking for the sight screen to be moved (they're about 8 feet by 10 feet and on wheels). Finally the umpire lost patience and asked the batsman "Ideally, lad, where would you like the sight screen to be placed?" The Kent batsman replied, "Ideally between me and that mad bastard, Fred Trueman …"

    Jz the second video and u started enjoying the technicalities involved in it.... Appreciate it bro cuz most of the other reviewers kind of do the best catches best wickets reviews where all the balls bowled by the bowler are shown one after the other not going into the details cuz a bowler Or a batsmen throws a ball or plays a ball based on many other circumstances like Over cast conditions, green pitch, dead pitch, bounce from the pitch,speed of the ball and variations like where exactly are u holding the ball and where exactly in the rotation of your arm are u releasing the ball, with spinners it's like how much spin are u inducting into the ball and where from are u releasing it and why so which again depends on the conditions of the pitch,stadium and climate so many parameters are factored in before playing so not many have I seen especially the American reviewers going into those fine details u for one are doing it... Kudos brother 💯 keep going 🔥

    The obvious follow up video for you is to see Shane Warne, regarded by most as the greatest proponent of the same style of bowling (leg-spinners), who would certainly have been a role model for Rashid Khan. You can see Warne run through his entire range of tricks in the nets; leg-spin, googly, flipper, slider, top-spinner, etc. The other huge factor for this type of bowler is mind games, and Warne was the master of that. A lot of batsmen were conned into playing the reputation of Warne instead of looking at the ball and playing the ball.

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 5 месяцев назад

      Except for the first ball Mike Gatting faced against Warne. Warne had played 1 previous Test (against India in Sydney, I think) and taken 1 wicket for 101 runs (not good numbers). So he had NO reputation. It was Warne's first ball in a Test match in England. It pitched outside Gatting's leg stump and he thought it was safe to leave it through to the Keeper.
      The ball pitched, & then turned. It passed IN FRONT of Gatting's legs, and hit the top of off stump.
      To this day Gatting still doesn't know what he did wrong.

    • @colinmorrison5119
      @colinmorrison5119 5 месяцев назад

      I remember watching that ball live.
      Warne didn't actually have a great googly - the most effective non-stock ball he had was the one that drifted in then went straight. The most common dismissal in Test cricket for a while was 'lbw Warne'. It was eventually surpassed by 'b Muralideran'. We were very fortunate to have both those spinners in the same era.
      The best exponent of leg-break and googly these days would be someone like Rashid of England. His googly seems very hard to pick.

    • @rocketrabble6737
      @rocketrabble6737 5 месяцев назад

      @colinmorrison5119 After his serious shoulder surgery he almost didn't have a googly at all because of the added strain it can put on the shoulder for some leggies.
      It is a question of how you use googlies and other variations. There is a big difference between Tests and limited overs matches where batsmen are required to take extra risks.
      The first bowler to take 200 test wickets was Clarrie. Grimmett of Australia (although born in New Zealand). He was a leg-spinner and it is said that in the earlier part of his career batsmen could pick his googly because they could hear his fingers 'click'. He adapted to that by clicking the fingers of his left hand when he bowled vatious other deliveries.
      That is the sort of solution you can imagine Warne coming up with allied to getting inside the batsmens' heads.

    • @colinmorrison5119
      @colinmorrison5119 5 месяцев назад

      @@rocketrabble6737 I remember Atherton could pick Warne's flipper because there was an audible click. Maybe Cullinan should have had his ears checked!
      The advent of T20 has actually seen a resurgence of wrist spin, which is wonderful. Most sides seem to have one. I know Warne had his eye on young Rehan, coming through for England now. I don't think any are good enough, yet, to be automatic selections, but hopefully we'll see a few become top class.

His ball that goes the wrong way, right to left, is as he said called a "wrong un." Or as Rashid would call it - the "wrong one." It is counter intuitive, in my opinion. Walsh, Ambrose, Haynes, Lillee, mcGrath, Akthar, Akram, Hadlee, Marshal, Khan, Bumrah, Lee, Thompson, Starc, Mitchell, Donald, Steyn, Anderson, Cork, Boult and Bond. Some of them had swing, some pure pace, others swing and pace, accuracy, also movement and bounce. If i am not mistaken myself, Jimboy got the spin call wrong. The bowler is a right arm leg-spinner, which mean he uses right arm and his default spin is leg-spin, some also have specialty spin . Leg-spin is the ball that if pitched on the leg side(which is left/body side of the batsmen here) spins towards the wicket . And off-spin works the other way around.
    The spin description gets complicated if the bowler is left arm spinner. A rule of thumb, the spin is described based on the bowler's action. I wont confuse you by saying more.

  • @colinmorrison5119
    @colinmorrison5119 5 месяцев назад

    His terminology was completely wrong, but he had the contest correct.
    Note that a spinner doesn't just have direction of spin, they also have length (how close ball pitches to the batsman ), line (where it pitches in relation to the line between the stumps), pace, drift and flight (the bowler may bowl slower or faster, with more or less overspin to make it swerve ir dip, deceiving the batsman to the line or length).
    Conditions play a part, too. Some pitches spin more if you bowl faster, some might bounce more if you bowl slower with overspin, a dry outfield will scuff the ball faster, a newer ball may bite into the pitch more. Asian pitches tend to spin more, but are slower and bounce less. Australian pitches are dry and rock hard, so more bounce. English pitches are slower and less dry, spinning more with a newer ball.

    Rashid Khan bowls leg spin. He is pretty good but not a great spinner of the ball. The greatest leg spin bowler ever was Shane Warne. Please react to Shane, there are tons of videos to choose from and be amazed. The presenter is a little off in that he suggests the bowler only moves the ball R-L (leg break) or L-R (off break or googly). A good leg spin bowler does this plus a top spinner , a slider , and a flipper. All with the same arm action just wrist variations. There is a Shane Warne masterclass video where he demo's all these. A fast bowlers repertoire is different but equally broad. Out swing ,in swing , off cutter , leg cutter , seaming delivery (which can move opposite to the swing -so swings R-L then bounces and goes L-R often being completely unplayable) , cross seam and a variety of slower balls.

      Trevor Chappell's underarm delivery rumbled along at ground level, and is these days adjudged a "no ball."

    To pick the wrong’ un the batter will see much more of the back of the bowlers hand at the point of release 😊

      The ball will come out over the top of the bowler’s hand too, whereas with the stock leg spinner delivery it comes from the side of the hand.
      To complicate things further, there’s an intermediate position that the bowler can deliver the ball from the hand that can look like the wrong ‘un (googly) called a top spinner, which goes straight on when it bounces, but kicks up off the pitch in the same way as a ball hit with top spin in tennis does. This ball can fool the batsman by either enticing them to play for sideways movement that isn’t there or playing under the delivery either causing them to mishit the ball higher up the bat for a catch or missing it entirely that brings other modes of dismissal into play, particularly bowled or a stumping - where the batter leaves their crease (line on the pitch that represents their safe ground) to try and hit the ball and the wicketkeeper catches the ball and breaks the wicket before they can make their ground again.
      A leg spinner can also fool the batter with variations in trajectory including ‘drift’ where the ball moves further towards the batter’s legs in the air with physics that are similar to a baseball curve ball, and ‘drop’ where the bowler puts over spin on the ball so that it pitches sooner than they expect (the top spinner has the most over spin).
      Other variations include the ’flipper’ a version of the leg spinner that is delivered with a flick of ‘flip’ of the fingers that has a faster, flatter trajectory than a regular leg spinner and is useful for the bowled, leg before wicket and stumped modes of dismissal as the ball comes onto the batter faster than they expect and doesn’t bounce as high so it is easy to play over the top of it, and the similar ‘slider’ which goes straight on and skids or slides off the surface of the pitch to similar effect to the flipper.
      Leg spin is the most difficult bowling style to learn and implement effectively, but can be the most damaging when perfected.

    4:11 They're called a "Delivery" or you can also call it a "Ball". They're definitely not "throws" as "throwing" is considered different from "Bowling" & not legal during while Bowling in Cricket.

    Everything's good. But right to left from a left handed bowler is leg spin. Off spin is left to right.
    Right handed bowler:
    Right to left - leg spin
    Left to right - off spin
    Left handed bowler:
    Right to left: left arm orthodox (sometimes called left arm off spin)
    Left to right: left arm unorthodox ( sometimes called left arm wrist spin)

    Correction
    - The one goes away from the batsman is typical leg spin
    - The one that comes in to the batsman is called googly
    The above points are true for this bowler as his natural action of the bowling is leg spinner as he is delivering from the back of the hand.
    There is no off spin bowling here, if was not bowling from the back of his hand then he would have been a natural off spinner and the following would apply
    - The one that comes in to the batsman is off spin
    - The one goes away or does not spin into the batsman would be doosra or the wrong one
    There has been far better leg spin bowler than Rashid Khan and if you really want to explore this type of bowling (Leg Spinner) then search Share Warne from Australia. If you want to find the best off spin bowler ever then search Mauthiya Murlidharan from Sri Lanka.

    Completely wrong. Right to left right handed bowler to right handed batsman is leg spin, not off spin. An off spinner would move/spin the ball from the off side (from the right, from the right handed batsman's perspective) into the right handed batsman, towards the stumps, not away from the bat/stumps.

    Ball going right to left when the bowler is right handed is leg spin dude!
    A ball that comes into a batsman from left to right (left to right from bowler's viewpoint) is an off spin bowl.
    Rashid Khan is a leg spinner but now and then he will trick the batter by bowling an offspin when batter thinks he is going to do the leg spin. That is what makes Rashid Khan and similar spin bowlers very effective.
    This commentator guy is getting it all wrong!

    He doesn't really know what he is talking about. The delivery he described as "off spin" at 1:07 is wrong in many ways. That delivery is correctly called a "leg break".
    Rashid Khan does not bowl anything called "off spin". He is a "leg spinner" and he bowls "leg spin". That is a description of the type of bowler he is. It is not the name of any particular delivery. An off spinner typically uses their index finger to spin the ball, but leg spinners typically use their ring finger. Rashid Khan is a bit unusual in that his middle finger comes into it more than a typical leg spinner.
    The one that goes the other way he described as "leg spin" at 1:33 was also incorrect in many ways. He got it right later at 3:18 when he called it a "wrong'un" (it can also be called a "googly"). A leg spinner can potentially have a number of other variations besides the two mentioned. Rashid Khan's unusual grip means he has a particularly effective wrong'un, but it limits his leg break.
