In the late sixties, a young experimental performer formed a new band after he moved back to London in the psychedelic era. The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown saw singer Arthur take to the stage in flamboyant costumes, freaky make-up and an ornamental helmet on his head that burned with real fire. This was especially poignant when the band performed ‘Fire’, a single that would shoot to the top of the charts in the UK, Canada and the USA when released onto an unsuspecting public in 1968.
“I am the God of Hellfire, and I bring you… Fire!” sang Arthur at the start of ‘Fire’, and his performance of the song on UK TV show Top Of The Pops, complete with burning helmet, remains one of the most iconic and out-there No.1 performances of all time. Arthur has had several mishaps with his flaming helmet over the years - health and safety wasn’t such a big issue in the sixties and seventies. His wild on-stage theatrics would influence everyone from Alice Cooper to all manner of heavy metal performers over the coming decades.
Fifty-five years later, a young experimental producer named Luca recorded a tech-house track with his rapper pal, WasionKey. Sensing it needed a sample to lift it, he reached for a snippet of ‘Fire’ by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - and reached out to Brown himself on social media, to see what he thought of it. Brown, sensing the enthusiasm and ambition of young master Luca, not only granted clearance for the ‘Fire’ sample to Luca’s ‘New Spice’ track, but began to mentor Luca and take him on tour with him to play decks and keys. What a ledge! Despite being well into his eighties now, Arthur still performs regularly and is clearly motivated by helping the next generation of musical minds to break through as well.
‘New Spice (Fire)’ is now about to drop on Jack Said What, complete with a big room remix by dharkfunkh. Luca’s original track - with WasionKey’s rhymes bringing new flavas and spice - is lifted by the ‘Fire’ sample when it hits, while dharkfunkh pours kerosene on it in his rework, teasing the flames upwards with big beats and burning bassline undertow in order to trigger dancefloor eruption. One of these missives can’t fail to set your dancefloor alight if dropped at the right moment. Burnin’ up.
