I'm so glad you say you rarely shoot wide open. I have found it difficult too to nail focus consistently wide open and the depth of field is so shallow.
Just received my Canon 85mm f1.2 this lens is beautiful and heavy, usually set at f5.6 just love the range. Like a fast camera, Canon 1 DX Mark iii works wonders.
@@VanessaJoy hi Vanessa. Can you tell me how the EF 85mm f 1.4 compares to the new RF 85mm 1.2 adapted to the R5 or R6 in terms of autofocus speed alone? I have an R6 and debating a fast lens in this focal length for the sports I shoot. Just curious if you tried this older lens on the new RF bodies? Thanks
Spot on with your review, I've owned every version of the 85L and never used them in AF mode because they were so slow. The F1.4LIS is outstanding and I've had it since it's release.
Hi @return to home- did you have to use an adaptor to R6? Which adaptor works best? I am buying the same gear you mentioned here for wedding photography to start with. Thanks in advance!
They didn't put IS into the RF f/1.2 L series lenses because it effects the image quality. The top of the line RF series is about uncompromising image quality. If you want to get IS lenses, buy zooms or buy the RF 85mm f/1.8 with IS that's coming out later this year.
Great video Vanessa thanks for taking time to show us this bit out of my price range, Hope you and your family are staying well & safe at this strange time, keep these video's coming.
@@VanessaJoy lol, still i love it and also i visited your website, the colors are so live wana love to see how u edit your wedding photos. Do you have preset for that as well? Thanks in advance
Hi, what outside? settings do you use with the 85 1.4 and what indoor settings do you use? i’m having problems with the lighting, but my pictures are great. thank you.
This has given me something to think about. I have the 1.2 and it’s exactly as you described it in low light. With IBIS coming in the future Canon R5, i wonder how the non-stabilized lenses will perform on that platform. This will determine whether to keep shooting cheaper EF glass or pay a damn fortune for the RF glass.
@@mavfan1 lol, what does that even mean? If you are buying up RF L series prime lenses it's not because you're an early adopter, it's because those are the best auto-focus prime lenses ever built. It's not exactly a secret that both the 50mm 1.8 (macro) IS and 85mm 1.8 IS are coming out later this year, to go along with the 35mm 1.8. I'm personally going all in on the RF system. I am already waiting for next year when Native wide angle and super-telephoto prime lenses will be out for the RF system, along with a bunch of native RF lenses from Sigma and God knows who else. Probably have a few lines of native cine lenses coming out soon as well. The EF system is finished, Canon isn't even working on any new lenses for it. Sony and Nikon are not even close to touching the garment of Canon. Basically, even Red Komodo is going to use the RF lens mount. It's obviously the future.
@@masqueman01 Canon is set to announce the R5 for presale next month and they are also locked in to announce the R6 in July. Both cameras are still coming this year. R5 is less than 4000. Sony is announcing a new camera in June. Either the A7s III or the A7iv. Not too shabby a year for cameras.
Great video Vanessa. I had that lens and loved it, but then sold it when I bought the EOS R. I’m glad that you mentioned the Rf 85 1.2, but I wish that you would’ve spoken more about it since, from what I’m hearing, it’s kind of the future in lenses, although I think DSLRs will be around for a LONG time! Maybe you can do a future video on the Rf version?
I got the canon EF 85MM F1.8 And to buy the canon 85MM F1.4 L you need over £1.300 to buy them and you live in the part of the world where the LIGHT is very good for photography and in UK the LIGHT changes so quickly
i have a question if u r free plz guide me.can u tell which one buy. i m wedding shooter. canon rf 85 f2 macro or canon 85 1.4 L is plz tell me as soon as possible.i have canon eos r. now plz guide me which one better for professionally weddings Photography???
Hi, such a good review of a lens. Genuine thoughts and feedback from a proffesional photographer rather than looking at testsharts etc. that you see in some reviews. Great work, thanks.
Trying to download Vanessa’s FREE Posing Inspiration Guide, the download link takes me to a page which requires me to enter my name and e-mail. After doing this, I'm taken to a page that says it's on the way. The e-mail I received has a link that says "Yes, subscribe me to this list" but no Posing Inspiration Guide. Nothing mentions a subscription is necessary to receive the guide; this is very misleading. I thought the video was very informative but disappointed with trying to get the guide.
It looks like I don’t have a single mike grant in my system. Please either try again (we’ve been experiencing a site-wide email problem), or respond to the confirmation email so we have your email and can deliver it to you that way. :)
I have it and I love it ! I use it for concerts, weddings, dogshows, portraits etc … The image stabilisation is amazing ! I can even take sharp pics handheld at 1/10th of a second and I have a shaky hand !!!! I love my Canon 135 mm f2 too but I need short shutterspeeds (1/320th of a second or less ) because of the lack of image stabilisation. On the other hand the Canon 85 mm f1.8 is much more value for money than the Canon 85 mm f1.2 or f1.4
Vanessa, I think RF lenses are bigger because of the shorter flange distance of mirrorless cameras. Anyways, If you want to get rid of 85 f/1.2, you can send it over to me. I'll take a very good care of it. 😉
It is not the 1.2 or 1.4 I tested both the color rendition and bokeh type in 1.2 is very nice and unique this is why I kept it also with the canon r the focus is dead on even @1.2
Recently I have spoken with a few camera specialists on the Canon Live Chat website imaging.chat/. And I end up getting to play with an EOS R through their test drive thing. And I can say its amazing but anybody get the chance to use the EOS R with the 85mm RF lens? and how does compare with the 85mm EF mount ?
I did exactly the same as you and this lens is always with me I’m using it everywhere and finally I can shoot my kids while they are playing pleasure to use I have no idea why this old one is still on sale 😂
Sounds like click bait. Since when do you take pictures on a wedding at low shutter speed relying on the IS risking many pictures, with people moving around and all that.
Love the review Vanessa. I've been looking at that lens recently. Home run question: lol Should I sell my 135mm F2 for the 85mm 1.4???? Need some advice. #Canon1dx3 #Toronto :) Stay Safe
I'm so glad you say you rarely shoot wide open. I have found it difficult too to nail focus consistently wide open and the depth of field is so shallow.
It’s very difficult, Esp with moving subjects. Though the newer AF tech helps tons
I use my 85/1.2 for artistic shots and almost only at 1.2. For other uses, I have 85/1.8 which is awesome lens too, and relatively cheap.
My favorite and most used lens! Great in conjunction with the 35mm 1.4L II
Oooo good combo
Igual yo!!
Do you think I’ll miss my 85mm 1.2 II lens if I sell it and get this one? Does it still provide the dreamy look? I’m debating!!
Just received my Canon 85mm f1.2 this lens is beautiful and heavy, usually set at f5.6 just love the range. Like a fast camera, Canon 1 DX Mark iii works wonders.
Your video really sold me onto the 85mm 1.4L. The 1.2 was just to outdated, to be useable during professional applications.
Your pictures are amazing. I love the Canon 5DM4 and 85mm 1.4 combo. The rendering is really on point.
thanks so much!

They should’ve also release the RF85mm f1.2 with IS as well. Waiting on the R5 to put it to work how it should. Great video Vanessa.
Yeah that combo will probably be epic

The new Canon bodies have IS built in so you don’t need it in the lens.
I have the 35mm L, 85mm L and 70-200mm L F2.8 on the 1dx mark iii. That's all I need.
