- Life is a strange occurance for me sometimes. I found myself in Southern California for an unrelated issue and was asked if I could inspect a 2018 Jayco Precept Class A Gas motorhome on a Ford chassis. While I would normally say it was outside my service area, I did agree and drove a few hours down to Ramona, California and enjoyed the California sun and West Coast weather.
While this was a private party sale, the current owner was with me the whole time and was incredibly kind and understanding. I was in contact with the potential owner the whole time also and alerted them to the concerns I discovered.
While this is not an exhaustive complete RV inspection, I do try to highlight common inspection points and what to look for if purchasing a RV. Otherwise, I was impressed by the floorplan and the exterior space under the patio awning as it only has three slide outs on it.

I was happy to learn a little bit more about the Butterfield Stage and Mail Route too!

Thanks for watching
Low mileage 2018 motorhome, parked in Death Valley, California for 5 + years! Everything on the roof and the awnings cooked and crispy! Could you estimate what it would cost to remove all existing roof sealants around items on room and reseal?
Excellent learning experience for a new RV'r.
Welcome to California my man
Sorry for the off topic question but you have got to be the right guy to ask , are solera and lippert awning tubes interchangeable ? Just swapping the tube from my damaged carefree to a lippert tube.. I'll be reusing all the carefree hardware.
James, you available to do a PDI on an Entegra Esteem at La Mesa in Mesa later next month? Do you have a website?
Dude ,you are my hero , looking at a 1992 spartan motorhome it has aluminum siding with minor delamination in a couple places , fixed alot of fiberglass campers but would same epoxies work for aluminum
Hopefully you can help me, I have an 2005 inspire 330 country coach Cat C9. My water in fuel light is flashing, I took the dash off to trace wires the black wire off of the light is connected to ATC wire ,red to cluster of wires.. CAT says this C9 does not have a water in fuel sensor. Light will not go off.. HELP Please..
Wonderful video . Thank you much .
I have an National Surfside 2007 and we want to upgrade with a newer gas motorhome and we like Jayco precept very much so this video is awesome for our needs .
Should I go with a 20018-2020 with the V10 engine or should we chose the 2021-2023 with the v8 godzila ?! I heard that during pandemic they lowered the building quality a lot ….
dose jayco put a bottom in the generator slide out ?
I have spent hundreds of miles and many hours on finding a rig and people who say they are immaculate I go and find ceilings caving in… is a 2003 Safari Sahara 39’ with the 8.3 on the magnum chassis a good rig? The guy said Beaver made it. I know you have a Beaver.
I have the 95 Safari Serengeti, 8.3 with Magnum chassis. 77k miles, engine has been phenomenal, roof has had extensive water damage, previous owner claims repaired. Can't afford maintenance so stuck in AZ

That front cap is in rough shape for only 5 yrs old. Not criticism, just an observation. Nice looking rig though.
My guess is California sun…
@@MaryWehmeier sun or not its a terrible quality product..and under neath from midwest weather rust and corrosion
Decent coach, prefer diesel over gas.
Mexican joint had good breakfast last time I passed through Ramona. Good pie joint up the road in Julian.
the bestg apple pie, and I don't even like pie
Nice coach. How does this Jayco Precept roof compare to a Winnebago? Since a radius style seal, any concerns with loosing the roof like with the winnys?
This has framing and structure
It's definitely a good idea to carry a roll of Gorilla heavy-duty duct tape in your travel kit.
And always have GE mold and mildew resistant silicone. It's waterproof in 5 minutes
Man that thing looks so cheap and cold inside
schwintek.... I am out.... nothing but trouble.. AND after you fix the motors etc., your slide rubbers, seals are f*cked..
Looks like a decent coach, With some routine maintenance needed, Thanks for the video James
Dangit...wish I would have known you were in town....would have loved an inspection and counsel on maintenance on my rig....it was the first white Bounder on the right as you entered ...after watching your channel for a while I think youd actually be impressed with the condition of my roof...even for a 2002....didnt see it while you were up top....mabey I should run up and check it out...mabey some day i can catch up with ya when im in AJ
Thank you for the inspection James. Happy trails!
👍
Thanks for taking the time to do a video and share with us. Looked like a nice rig. We have had high 90s and over 100 with humidity but today is supposed to be mid 60s and 50s overnight with 80s tomorrow. Stay safe and healthy Sir.

I am SOOO happy to find your videos!!! [Oh, I AM subscribed!!! YOU BET] WE just bought a 2018 Jayco Precept 33U...with 6000 miles on it. Its in nice shape [as expected] but I want to do some add on solar to it. Can [or would] you tell me how do you find the wire runs etc...Are there schematics available to guide me etc? Whatever you can offer is much appreciated!!!
Great video as always thanks so much for sharing James.
Nice video! Please change gloves after touching the toilet 😩
Not a bad MH for entry-level
Nice job!
$7 vent cap now $0. LOL
Thanks for the video, it is seeing the build quality on modern RV's that really makes me appreciate my 2002 Safari Trek
That cracked sealant is terrible on the roof. I wouldn't trust that sealant on my RV or Jayco installing butyl correctly underneath ! Anyone gets into a wet climate with that sealant its going to leak sooner than later...
I replace my vent lids with the metal ones. The plastic ones go bad in AZ in no time at all.
Near where I grew up, too cool
That's a VENT hole yeah that's the ticket! 😱😝🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇲
How many years has your Prius Hybrid Battery lasted? How many miles on it, please? What year? Thinking about buying New 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX with 2.4 liter turbo engine and 27 MPG overall fuel mileage. Hoping the hybrid battery will last at least 10 years with low overall maintenance. Your thoughts ?
It's my experience that the traction hybrid battery starts failing around 200k miles. This is a 2015 I just went over 100k miles last month. It's my 3rd Prius and has been the best cars I've had
@@AZExpert thanks SOMUCH!!! Really love all your videos, too!!
I have a 2019 Jayco Precept 36A which is very similar to the one in this video. I take care of almost all of my own maintenance issues. The only thing bugging me at the moment is the opener on the front door. It is so strong it almost rips the door out of your hand. My G-kids can't control it and it smashes into the awning outside. The gas lift strut is located under the door. I have examined it many times and it doesn't seem like its adjustable. Anyway I was wondering if you knew a fix. TIA
I would replace it with a weaker gas strust, maybe 10 or 20 lbs, so its mostly a dampener and stop not an assist.
Wilco and thanks@@AZExpert
Ten way adjustable seats with air ride are nice. For driver and passenger.
James, Our 2018 Jayco Alante has many similarities to that 2018 Precept. It has almost the same exact miles. I’m 6’-2” so after banging my head on the Euroloft, we got the book and adjusted it to go up higher. Now I can walk under it without banging. I just finished the roof inspection and it was a little better than that one. I still need to clean the roof again and wax it. For the price point, I’m of the opinion Jayco is very good. Also, I have an excellent dealer with superb service! Thanks for showing this one! Kevin
"It survived the Hurricane here in California..." 😂😂😂😂
This Inspection HELPS more than you know. I love your commentary! Where are your knee pads?! Greetings from across The Pond in the U.K.! ☺
cheaper version of filon..terrible and its a jayco product terrible quality front cap roof, everything...not a fan
Thanks for another informative video. Oh my, this is a lovely big rv that travels on our smooth roads and highways. No thanks, I'll pass on this adventure.
Great inspection....Nice looking unit...That being said I will stay with my 2011 Tiffen Allegro Red 36qsa. 😎😎😎
Evil eye pattern on the valances, Love it! Great inspection and nice to see you find some issues on what appeared to be a well maintained and fairly new unit. I'm sure that it not uncommon. We will be buying an RV in the coming year and all your information will be invaluable. Thanks for the effort to make and post these videos.
Duct tape! Always carry it- even have a roll in white in case doors to utilities come open in highway.
Yes indeed I really love my 96 sun cruiser after looking at this rig.
You have taught me so much, thank you for the vids!
Nice! I love the run-through of the inspections. I realized today that I've never had my LP tested for leaks 😮 gonna add that onto the list!
Nice pre-c@vid unit! Wonder why such low miles. How do you do a full inspection if you dont have water, sewer & shore power? I know you can kinda do power off the gene but still need to check everything, especially transfer switch when plugging in? When I had an inspection done on a Monaco down in that area the inspector requested all the utilities. Luckily the owner had room & all the hookups available at his house. Unfortunately the rear end was leaking so we passed on the coach.
there are some limits to inspections when there are not utilities
Thanks for another great video, James! You said this roof is made of FRP. In other videos, you have described roofs that were made of gelcoat fiberglass. Would that type be made in a big, huge mold, like the front and rear caps are?
gel coat is molded fiberglass, filon and frp are sheet fiberglass on a roll
Why don't you check all the storage compartments before you put the slides out. That way you don't have to crawl under the slides to get to them?
save time to check slides out while I'm down there
