I wouldn't have expected that bike NOT to run, with two bonafide wizards turning wrenches on it. Shelby Daytona and Jared Weems. Two of the coolest and smartest guys on the motorcycle scene.
A 75 Ironhead was my first motorcycle back in 2000. Seeing you guys getting that back on the road was awesome. I got the feels! I now ride a 98 Sporty and a 2021 Sportster S. Thanks for sharing that!
Got a,1975 ironhead. Had a new s&s stroker kit in it, andrew pb+ cams, super e carb...the whole 9! Fast bike, but rod bearings failed! Took the entire motor apart, looked like silver pixie dust all in the motor. Sold all the s&s stroker parts, went back to all stock with low compression cast pistons 8.5:1. Guarantee it will be reliable! Once you start hot rodding those bikes, your asking for major headaches! Keep them stock, get a cycle electric dgv 5000 genny, a miku i vm 38 or cv carb and adjustments as needed and an ironhead will be rock reliable! A old biker has 183,000 miles on a original bone stock 1973 ironhead!!! Never had to do any work to the bottom end either! A miracle, maybe....or just knows what to do and when to do it!
Man you guys have some serious skills. I’ve been teaching myself to work on my 75 iron head for over a year and I haven’t gotten it running yet About 500 kicks into it I had to tear it down to replace some seals but your video has me fired up to get it running
Before you go into major engine work I would first make sure you have oil flow to rocker boxes. If so then performing a leak down test coupled with manual compression test will indicate a weak cylinder. Dont go for the rebuild off the bat unless its F***ed.
I don't know any Harley jokes and i honestly love all bikes. I own a 2020 Kawasaki ZH2, a 2019 M8 Street Bob with a 124 kit, a 2009 Dyna Street Bob and a 2002 Triumph Speed Triple. And i think you're Dyna looks pretty damn good. Less hate, more love 🤙🏼
Got a '76 Ironhead... runs like a champ. Installed an electric starter last yr... my leg was getting tired of kickin it after 45 yrs of owning it. Yep... bought it NEW in '76! Still kick it to get it going when it's cold. Usually starts on the first kick after I give it a full choke key off prime kick. Problem I would have is when I'd pull in to a gas station and shut it off if it didn't fire on the first kick it usually coughed the gas death cloud and flooded. At that point you were looking at 5-10 minutes of kicking with the gas and key off to try and clear it. Now with the electric starter if it does that I just hit the starter and it eventually fires again! (edit) wanted to say I learned how to get the carb off without taking the tank and all that stuff off the left side... The bottom nut come off from below the carb with a wrench going between the pushrods... the top nut you use a crows foot on the end of a socket wrench...
I kinda like the Butterscotch color. I hope Biker Babe Beth uses this video as inspiration to get her old Iron head sportster running. It took them 2 hours, Beth. 2 hours. : )
Great video man. I am a believer in Ironheads myself. I bought a non running 73 a few years back. After getting it running at the guy’s place I opted to ride it the 300 miles home with my buddy in the truck following. I grinned the whole way. These bikes are reliable if you don’t mind doing a few basic maintenance jobs.
All right Derek you have to understand that you have to add at least 15 minutes to every hour you say because we call that BS time. So you didn't do all that bad after all. I put a single fire ignition on a 79 Harley one time and it was like a two-day project but I got it right and of course it's sprung a leaked oil was going everywhere and you know that was another half a day. It's just the way it was. The new Evo has changed everything. I've got a 99 Buell M2 that I still love. Thanks for all the content my friend thank you Shelby.
Been working on ironheads off & on almost since that bike was new...None of us older "Harley guys" are(or should be) laughing at y'all.(at least not anything on THIS vid...:-) ...) Proper troubleshooting & got it running much quicker than most of us would....Year earlier = right foot shifter left foot rear brake!...:-) ...Good to find one THAT OEM that seems to just needs a bit of freshening up(Eagle/banner sticker/decal on upper left tank is from '76 IIRC)...All aspects of front brake rebuild are simple tasks for a man of your talent... Hope to see more of this machine & it's progress in future vids
Whine. I used to have a 74 XLCH back in the early 80's. It was a fun bike! One of these days I'll find another. Right hand shift is the only way to go! I'm sure it'll look amazing when you get it done up like the painting.
You got the right guy over there to help you. Can't believe he's got time with all of Shadetrees projects! Jared, I am proud of you for saying Harley Davidson correctly so many times. It's got to sting though 😂
I have a 1985 Sportster 1000 the last year Harley Davidson made the 1000 cc an in 2022 it runs better then some new bikes I've been around leaks no oil doesn't smoke runs like a charm couldn't ask for a better bike
Nice to see Shelby getting some airtime. Ol' Shady gives him so much crap to do and he has to fix so many botched jobs of Brapstar's without being placed front n centre of the vids!
awesome video as always dude and Shelby is one hell of a person to help you with that Sporty . you made this video funny as hell pickin on us Harley Guys about spit up my beer watchin you work on a Harley . you and Shelby both ROCK !!!! 👍
Okay that was so cool! That's awesome and what I love. You two should build together because the talent is obvious. Shelby is a gifted mechanic and you are the artist. I will be buying raffle tickets for that one. I love old bikes, and I ride old bikes. Just something about them. Peace.
What do old Harleys and hound dogs have in common? 1) Their bark is worse than their bite. 2) They always mark their spot. 3) They love to ride in pick up trucks. 4) The older they get, the more time they spend on the porch. I've ridden a 72' XLCH since 1996 and love it, but I recently got a 2000 Heritage and that new fangled electric leg is starting to spoil me. Just turn on the key, push a button and go man go. No primer kicks or nothin. What will they think of next.
The blinkers didn't blink by them selves in those years. They also didn't have throttle return Springs either. The right hand brake is hard to get used to.
I ride a Sportster 883 I took a test ride on a fuel and I wrote it like a Sportster. I gave it gas and wheelie I hit the brakes and it did a stoppie. My Sportster is Bruce Banner a Buell is the Hulk!
Did this guy say dumb he should kind of look in the mirror it is nice though to see the learning impaired try to do something he's definitely got some challenges but at least he's trying and God bless his heart I had a 75 Harley Sportster 1000 when I was 18 years old I wrote it everywhere didn't have any other problems than any other normal motorcycle
@@LonesomeNomad137 an original bike that has never been apart will always be worth more than one that has been customized with a pile of original parts
75 was the first year of right hand shifter. Gov regulations made it so manufacturers had to comply. AMF just made a long armature that went through the frame where the rear brake lever was the year before. It was a bandaid to be in compliance. This configuration only lasted 75 and 76 until they redesigned the cases to accommodate the shfter shaft to come out on the right. That big lanky shifter was terrible. I had mine separate at the weld seam and start dragging on the road in the middle of a long ride.
It amuses me so much that AMF Harleys we're so maligned and badmouth as pieces of junk and 40 years later they are now precious valuable collectibles. When people comment on videos that they wish AMF we buy Harley-Davidson back that shows you how bad things are with relations with Harley-Davidson Corporation.
my 75 ironhead 1000 was sitting out in the weather for 16 yrs . put fresh gas drained the carb, new battery, fired right up. i ride it all the time
Very nice vintage Sportster and it isn't modified. Great Job😃
Love that AMF paint. Can’t wait to see what becomes of this bike.
In 1975 I was riding a 67 Ironhead !
✊
Guys, thanks for putting the old scooter back on the road. Hate to see them sit for too long.
You can always get ironheads to run great and reliable!

Awesome Jared! And thank u Shelby for helping getting that bike running. So glad it runs like it does for a 75!
Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Can't wait!

My first bike back in the day a 74 AMF sporster. 0f course I had to stroke it and it also had kick and electric!!! Brings back memories
I had a 1973 iron head with right side shifter. Had that bike for 30 years, and the guy I sold it to 15 years ago is still riding it.

My first Harley, 1975 XLH 1000 Sportster bought used in April, 1978. Same color. Paid $1,850.00. Great bike.
Right on!!!
Thank you for all your doing man. Peace ✌
If you guys honestly just hit it & it idled like that
I give you my respect!!
Ironhead wins again! With old Harleys you dont count the time, you count Beers 😝
I just acquired a 72 iron head and I am very excited to get it home and play with it. As in get it running.
Technically, you made it. You said run not idle.👍
if it were me i would leave it stock but i'm a lazy sob lol. do what you do weems. can't wait to see where you go with this one.
F yeah bro she lives!

In 79 went to work at my first Harley dealership....owner was so tight we had zero bike lifts in the shop...in 81 I opened my own shop.
The blinkers didn't blink by them selves in those years. They also didn't have throttle return Springs either. The right hand brake is hard to get used to.

90% of all Harleys are still on the road .the other 10% made it home ;-)
That's a real nice survivor. Keep it stock and ride the wheels off it.
I enjoyed that one. I'm not a Harley guy but would love to find something like that.
My Evo puked after sleeping for a winter, didn’t realize that was a Harley Hiccup
I'd leave that original paint Sporty alone, put a stock seat and horn, remove the stickers on the tank, it would make a great bike.
I literally gonma get this exact bike i have a photo of my dads 75 sportster 1000 that is the exact color too cant wait till i get one
So Awesome!
I had the same bike but an XLCH
Rad!
Alternate name for Harley Davidson (Highly Dangerous) 🤣
That's what I'm talkin' about!
Thanks Kenny!

Q: What's the difference between a Harley and a Hoover?
A: The location of the dirt bag...
Cheers 🍻
AMF Harley Davidson = hardley davidson. Cool bike, would ride for as far it'd get me
Can't be mad at that. Well done despite poor attempt at harley bashing.
Please just clean it up and leave it as stock as possible!

Was this the 'between ' model that converted the rightside brake lever to a shifter?
I think 1974 was the last year of the right side shifter on a Sportster.
Yup!
Hardly Dangerous Son
Harley Davidson is Americas largest cosplay business - change my mind
take 15 min off total time as it went straight in with spot on tick over: sorted!.
i have a 76. I just need to clean the tank, carb and petcock. she do run.....when she has fuel....lol.
Do drip pans come standard with Harleys or do you have to buy them separately
This is a gorgeous, all original Sportster! Anything you do to it (other than getting it running and roadworthy) will only decrease the value.
Save all the original parts

I thought 74 was last year for right hand shift ??? I see this is a right hand but you say it's a 75.... Just curious!!!
I had a 74 900 xlch and I still have the old rebuild book and it says 75 is left hand shift and 74 is last year right hand shift.
75 was the first year of right hand shifter. Gov regulations made it so manufacturers had to comply. Left hand. Apparently don't know my left from my right.
It is left foot shift with linkage.
Also, don't know my hand from my foot🙃
20 seconds minus the 45 minutes in stopages.
