Agree. Thankfully I think this is starting to happen. Downtube and chainstay protection is faily common, and lot of bikes come with a spare roll of clear tape for contact points. Or the manufacturer (E.g. Trek) sell specific frame wrap kits for each model. Give it another few years and factory wrapped frames and suspension components will most likely be the norm.
Mind blowing! Bro, thanks so much for sharing so much knowledge. True “customization”. Sorry (not sorry) to you that think that a bunch of $$$ for drop in parts that work, out the gate, without some finagling is all it takes. Some stuff works that way. But you gotta go hands on, measure, cut, modify and do the finishing touches by hand. Period.
Just saw this video. Was exactly what I was looking for. I recently bought a new Trek. RUclips is so smart seems it knows me better than myself. You did a fantastic job explaining this. One question I have for you. Could I get away with just doing the tape on the undersides of the bike and leaving the top sides un-taped? That way I would keep the black glossy look of the bike. Or in your professional experience is no area safe from gravel and nicks? Thanks for your help and passion!
Glad it helped! I tape the top specifically because I wear knee pads, thick shorts, or DH pants. Rubbing on the top tube usually scuffs up the paint pretty good and it doesn't look good after a while. You can also get clearer 3m tape that isn't as thick if you don't want to lose that shine.
I have installed this on many bikes and have never had an issue with paint peeling. But on an older bike that is already chipping, I think any tape would pull paint off. So best option would be to install right when you get the bike, then you don't have to worry about it.
Has anyone tried using Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape? I've got a roll of it in the workshop and was thinking of using it as DIY lower protection for my new Fox Factory 36 fork. Not sure if it's too tacky though and will end up damaging the paint and stickers if I need to remove it?
Just bought mtb 6061 alloy what should I do to keep the shining on and how clean the frame with water or other stuffs and stop erosion. I'm confused. Some are spraying some seramic spray some weurth products please give some advice.
Covering the frame itself is really the only way to protect it. Cleaning products just make it look pretty, and don't offer much actual protection from the elements.
@@daniellowebusiness Look up Lamin-X. Their Amazon prices are cheapest. Just installed it and you wouldn't know it was there unless you put it on yourself.
Greaat !!! I'm from Chile and I wanna purchase the same tape you used in the video, but the link in the description links to a "3M Safety 7641 Shower Tread" Is that OK ??? Are the same product the 1 inch, the 2 inch and the huge roll? Greetings.
I’ve been looking on Amazon for a good vinyl protection for my bike and there was to much to choose from and then I came across your video and was like great that’s the stuff I want so I clicked your link for the small tape and it took me to a page with walk slip resistant tread so it must of changed now so now I’m back to square one doh 😭😂
That's exactly what it is! It's called safety tape and it's predominantly used in bath tubs actually. Essentially water proof and durable enough to walk on, need I say more?
As long as the decals are in good condition, there shouldn't be an issue. And even if they aren't in the best condition new decals are really really easy to order. And you can get cool custom colors too!
I don't personally do frame wraps, but Ridgeline will do them for you. Just depends on what type of tape your want to use, and how much of the bike you want covered.
does the tape turns yellow overtime? what makes this tape suitable for mtb protection? because i'm looking to do it too, and some suggested scotchgard 3m
I have heard on MTBR these type of tapes will damage the clear coat and paint when you remove it or replace with new tape. What is your experience with removing the tape and how do you prevent damaging the finish on the bike?
I can only speak for the kind that I use, and it comes off really easy. I know some people try to get it really stuck with a hair dryer, and that's when issues can arise. Just put it on firm with your fingers and try to go from the middle to the outside to minimize bubbles. There may be some at the end but they slowly disappear over time. DO NOT USE HEAT TO SEAT!
@@SingleTrackSurgeon guess it will for most riders. I use 3M paint protect 0.36mm for glossy frames and Xpel Stealth for matte. 👍🏼 Bit more expensive, but still okay
@@everywherelocal I was skeptical about the durability, but once you figure out the process the safety tape is the most protective thing I've found. If you are doing a gloss frame you can go a variety of different ways, but in my experience gloss frames are much harder to cover without seeing imperfections in the application. For that reason I primarily stick with the safety tape.
It is slightly textured, but thats also what allows it to seal better than the smooth textured versions. It also hides fingerprints, and if you have ever put on a clear coat it is a nightmare to keep those at bay.
Fantastic video! Seeing as frame protection is kind of a norm these days, it would be nice if frames came pre-protected.
They do for most AM / Enduro rides on the down tube. But you are right, some sort of full frame skin would be nice.
Isn’t that called paint? Joking aside, I’ve wondered about giving the more damage prone areas of my bike frame a blow over with truck bed liner paint.

I'm not sure if you are happy about the tricks or not... but I still do frame protection the way for all my bikes.
clever tip with the backing
Thanks! Saves a lot of time down the road.
We’ve been doing that here in Guatemala to, but it has become hard to find the 2” wide clear tape.

3M Safety Tape :D
would this tape stuck to bike like scotch tape and peel away paint if I want to get rid of?
I have installed this on many bikes and have never had an issue with paint peeling. But on an older bike that is already chipping, I think any tape would pull paint off. So best option would be to install right when you get the bike, then you don't have to worry about it.
Couple of questions: 1, does the paint fade more where the frame isnt covered compared to where it is covered, and 2 how easy is it to get it off
Peels right off! Save the backing, and just cut another piece from the template and you are good to go!

I would guess that the adhesive on that is too strong, but let me know how it goes.
Thoughts on dry versus the wet (baby shampoo and water spray bottle) application methods? Can you use either method with any type of 3M film?
The wet method can work, but with the safety tape version you don't need it.
Thank you for the video but can you please tell me the part number of that tape. Thanks 🙏
I just added an updated link.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon thanks i really appreciate 🙏
No problem, I'm not sure why they changed the product link on my in the first place. 🤦🏽♂️
I’m almost positive they do not sell this product for the price stated in the video. If you can find it would you please list it again? Thank you!
I just updated the link in the description. One roll will do more than one bike, hence the $10 price. I can usually do 2-3 bikes with one roll.

Do you know if they make a matte finish tape? I have been looking on Amazon and haven’t found any. Would like it to match my matte paint.
The textured 3M safety tape has a matte finish to it, so it will work perfectly.
did you find any matte tape? im looking for some for my bike
The 3M safety tape is textured, so it does look matte.

This option looks great! Only thing is that the small roll option in your description links to non slip stair protection tape

Hi thanks for the video, does this leave residue on a carbon frame when taken off?
Any residue is very minimal, in 90% of my removals there has been no residue at all.

They peel it off lol

Nope, it comes off surprisingly easy for how well it adheres.

That's exactly what it is, shower slip tape or safety tape. 2" is what I use.
Some links call it safety tape, some shower tread, it's all the same stuff. I use the 2" for the whole bike and cut it down.
