- Though it may seem a bit challenging with just a few expert tips finding top dead center on a propane tank has never been easier!
In this video I show you how to set up your cook chamber to easily find the top dead center of your tank or pipe. This is the first step I use for marking out the cook chamber door cut.
There really are no wrong answers for how big or what size your cook chamber door should be. I have a few preferences though. I like the top door cut to be approx. 3 to 5 inches towards the door side of the cook chamber (personal preference) and the bottom cut to be at approx 3 o'clock looking from the end of the tank.
Tools that will help you do this are:
a Center Head Square
a Magnetic Torpedo Level
a Pipe Wrap Template or flexible tape measure
a Sharpie Marker
a Long Straight Edge

Frank & Tom in the morning !! No better way to start your day !!
If y'all choose to, look for a CURV-O-MARK #7 PIPE CENTER FINDER, or the FLANGE WIZARD PIPE CENTER FINDER TOOL the large one ! They have a center punch built in ! I used one for years, and still have 2 of them !!
I have used your way too, also you can use a framing square, and a torpedo level !!
Great video !!
those are REALLY nice!! The curv-o-mark stuff is top dollar!
@@SmokerBuilder look in the Pawn Shops, on Ebay, Craigslist sometimes has one or two, Facebook markets too !!
Nice way to get a centering head. Never thought of doing that. Thanks
Jackson Safety makes a centering head tool called "Curv O Mark" with a built in level (that rotates with degree marks) and punch. I use mine pretty regularly. Saves from having to juggle the square and level at the same time. Anyways, I love your videos and products. Keep on keeping on.
Those are awesome! I had one a long time ago. Need to get another
Why not just rotate the tank 180* and put the bungs at the bottom for a drain cleanout? Grinding off the lift points on the ends, and the “leg” that was previously at the bottom would make for a really clean look.
That's also a good Idea. I have done that on a few. only thing is sometimes the older tanks have some perty bad pitting in the metal from rusting. great idea for some of the tanks on better shape though!
