My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.

Regarding the Olympics, Jess saying- "I think it's more fun to get excited" was one of the most refreshing things. I get that the Olympics aren't everyone's thing, and that if you live in a host city it can be very disruptive while it's happening and while the city prepares... and, sure, the 'too cool for school' attitude might be more typically Parisian than other places. But hearing Jess's perspective was so, so lovely! Besides, those are wise words and can apply to so many things in life. Go Jess! (and, as ever, thanks for these videos)

Jay, sorry for being off-topic but i spent the last (cloudy and wet) week in Paris for the first time, and to help prepare I binged a lot of your videos. So thank you for being disciplined and dedicated to vlogging! Now that I’ve been there, here are my standout impressions of the city, simplified as much as possible:
    -police sirens
    -fat pigeons
    -window shopping
    -city as monument
    -sweets everywhere
    -aerobic activity
    -😂

Hotels not being full is not surprising, and neither are the locals leaving. I'm from Los Angeles. I lived here in '84 and everyone feared that the city hosting the Olympics would turn it into a living hell. It turned out the opposite was true. So many people left town that what happened was that traffic was less than normal, and everything was pretty chill. Pretty sure Paris will experience the same. Have fun during it. Also, Paris is going to be so much better when the Olympics are said and done. The "greenifying" (that's not even a word🙄) that's happening is going to be awesome.

Another Vancouverite. The 2010 Winter Olympics were terrific. I worked in the downtown core close to many of the ‘activation’ areas and it was fantastic to be amongst all the visitors and the excitement on a daily basis. We didn’t get much work done but no one cared. I envy you the opportunity to experience the Olympics as a resident of Paris. It will be amazing. Something that gets overlooked is the cultural aspect of the Games. Paris has amazing cultural activities in ‘normal’ times but I suggest you look into the extra events that will be scheduled as part of the JO. A number of friends left town during the games thinking it would be chaotic and they regretted it. The energy and vibe in the city was non-stop, culminating when the Canadian men’s hockey team won the Gold Medal. You could hear the cheers throughout the city. Magical.

Jess hit the nail on the head for the Olympics - If - it's anything like Atlanta was in '96. We had doom and gloom naysayers with out or control costs on rental housing and hotels. Over-run traffic etc. We don't/didn't have the transportation infrastructure that Paris (and London) have to move people around smoothly. We actually found downtown almost a ghost town unless you were near Centennial Olympic Park, or the other venues. Everyone was friendly and it was easy to move around. We couldn't get the hot gymnastic tickets, but we saw shooting, swimming, baseball, equestrian etc. Wonderful time! Hopes that Paris has a wonderful Olympics!

I lived in Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics. It was fun to participate in some of the cultural events and art people could tap into funding which resulted in enjoyable and fun events and spaces. Hard to say if visitors to the city participated in any of those spaces but myself and friends had a good time. I also found the Olympic visitors seemed to hang around the official venues and central commercial areas. My impression was that the Olympic visitors were there for the sporting events and didn't explore the city much. The unfortunate result was locals avoided their usual restaurants/shopping districts as they feared the over crowding and the visitors couldn't be bothered to go outside the norm. So business took a double hit. Honestly the olympics didn't affect my day to day. Every Olympic city seems to expect an influx in money and business but it seems that is only true for Governments in infrastructure spending and Big Business. The little guy gets left out. I'm sure the people of Paris will enjoy the upgrades in infrastructure and the freshening up of the city.

I don’t have a post office in my village so we would mail things from the tabac. She was a VERY grumpy lady and I hated going. I thought it was because I was American but no-my sweet French neighbor said the same! Seems she didn’t pay taxes and was shut down. We can now mail letter at my small grocery and they are lovely! This is my way of saying I’m a bit jealous of your post office. Hope the post card made it.

Oh my gosh, I had no idea there was an online version! I downloaded the 2023 pdf when I bought it (we visited Paris a couple weeks ago) and I did find that some of the places no longer existed. I had to keep the pdf open on my phone and scroll through. It was clunky, haha! I think I was under the impression that there was a map, and didn't know that was a patrons thing either.

Jay and Jess- can you recommend a place to rent bikes for a whole week? We are tall people (6'7, 6'4 and 5'8.) The city rental bikes in most cities are not a good fit. Is there infrastructure for locking the bikes? We will be near the rowing venue (Vaire sur Marnes) the first week, in the city the second week.

As far as the places that close, just a thought here. Could you have a web scrape program that can scrape places on Google to find when those businesses are "Permanently Closed" or something like that, and then link it to the guide (or something else that will allow you to confirm it)? I was thinking that something like that might help with updating.
